Chi Yu nodded. She noticed the lingering expression on Sister Nan’s face, it looked a little despondent. Gripping the hem of Sister Nan’s clothes, she lowered her gaze and pressed her lips together.
The bicycle rolled along the dirt road. A light rain had fallen the night before, leaving the ground muddy and the wheels filthy. Tang Jing made a mental note to wash the bike when they got back.
To avoid splashing mud on themselves, she rode slowly and steadily.
This was also why she had woken up so early, to account for any unexpected delays.
By the time they reached the town, the market had just begun.
The two found a spot, parked their bike, set up the clothes rack, and began hanging the garments one by one.
Other vendors at the market noticed them, glancing over briefly before losing interest when they saw the two girls only had a few pieces of clothing on display. They quickly turned their attention elsewhere.
By the time the vendors had mostly set up their stalls, the first wave of market-goers arrived.
Men, women, adults, and children everyone from the surrounding villages had come for the market day. Even those from town who weren’t working had shown up.
Yet, Tang Jing and Chi Yu’s stall remained untouched.
Chi Yu grew increasingly anxious. Every time someone passed by, she would stare at them with hopeful eyes.
Tang Jing, however, wasn’t worried at all. Seeing Chi Yu’s eager gaze, she smiled and said, “Don’t rush. It’s only just begun.”
Chi Yu nodded but kept her eyes fixed on the passing crowd.
Just then, two stylishly dressed girls walked by, glancing at the stalls on either side. They didn’t seem particularly interested in anything until
“Would you two like to take a look?” Tang Jing called out.
The girls turned toward the voice and immediately noticed the eye-catching clothes rack, followed by the garments hanging from it. The designs looked appealing, so they approached.
This was the first time anyone had stopped by their stall. Chi Yu, thrilled, grabbed Tang Jing’s sleeve.
Tang Jing chuckled and gently patted her back.
“This dress is really cute!”
“This pale yellow one is nice too.”
Each girl found a style they liked, holding them up against themselves.
“Miss, how much is this?” one of them asked, clearly tempted.
Tang Jing quoted a price.
After only a brief hesitation, the girl declared, “I’ll take it.”
Chi Yu’s eyes curved into delighted crescents.
Tang Jing said, “Great, I’ll wrap it up for you.”
The other girl hesitated, she had just bought clothes a couple of days ago and had already spent her monthly allowance. Regretfully, she sighed, “I’ll have to come back next month.”
“Boss, do you only have these few pieces?” the purchasing girl asked.
“No, there are more at home that I didn’t bring today,” Tang Jing replied vaguely.
If they sold out today, she could restock tomorrow maybe even expand her selection.
“Did you pick these out yourself?” the girl continued. “I really love the styles. Next time I need clothes, I’ll come straight to you.”
“Sure, I’ll give you a discount then,” Tang Jing said with a smile. After all, this was practically a repeat customer now.
“Where can I find you?” the girl asked.
“At New City Plaza.”
It was a newly built commercial square from last year’s pilot project. Not many shops had moved in yet, but Tang Jing planned to rent a storefront there once she had saved enough.
“Got it. I’ll head straight there next time.”
Just then, another group of customers was drawn in. The girl who had already made her purchase waved goodbye and left.
Chi Yu had been nervous earlier, thinking it would take all day to sell their stock. But before the morning was even over, everything was gone. Some customers even returned with friends, only to be disappointed when they found out the clothes were already sold out.
“Boss, will you still be selling tomorrow?”
“Selling, at New City Square.”
Whenever asked where she sold clothes, Tang Jing would always say New City Square.
This was also the spot she had scouted out beforehand, even securing a stall there, just pay the rent when the time came.
After selling the clothes, Tang Jing packed up the clothing rack and took Chi Yu out for a meal.
Chi Yu shook her head, tugging at her sleeve, wanting her to go back home to eat.
After all, eating out was far too expensive.
Tang Jing thought for a moment and nodded. “Alright, then let’s buy some meat to take back and eat with Grandma consider it a celebration for a successful opening day.”
Chi Yu smiled and gave a soft “Mm” in agreement.
On their way back to the village, some people spotted them and greeted them, curious about why they were carrying a clothing rack around.
Every time this question came up, Tang Jing would just smile. Since the business was still new and hadn’t made any real progress yet, it wasn’t the time to say much.
Besides, even though she got along well with the aunts and uncles in the village, there were always those who couldn’t stand to see others do well. If they found out she was running a business, they’d start prying fawning over her if she succeeded, or even kicking her while she was down if she struggled.
Either way, it was best to avoid unnecessary trouble.
Ever since the clothes sold out, Chi Yu had been clutching the cloth bag in her arms tightly because Sister Nan had entrusted all the money to her. This was Sister Nan’s entire capital, and she couldn’t afford to lose it.
When they got home, Grandma Qin was surprised to see them back so early. “Sold out already?”
“Sold out.” Not wanting to worry the old lady, Tang Jing didn’t tease her. She took the cloth bag from Chi Yu and handed it to Grandma Qin. “This is all the money from today’s sales. I did a quick calculation, we made about two hundred yuan in profit.”
“Three hundred yuan?” Grandma Qin was stunned.
After all, it was just six pieces of clothing, sold out in one morning, and they’d made three hundred yuan.
Tang Jing pulled her to sit down, smiling. “The customers today even said they’d bring friends to buy from me tomorrow. Looks like the market’s opening up word of mouth will bring more and more people to buy clothes.”
Grandma Qin felt a little dazed by her words. Before today, she could never have imagined that her granddaughter would start selling clothes and on the very first day, receive such a promising sign. She laughed, clasping her hands in prayer. “Our Qin family’s hardships are finally paying off.”
Tang Jing said, “Grandma, I bought some meat. Let’s cook it today to celebrate our successful first day.”
“Good, good. Grandma will cook it right away.” Grandma Qin briskly took the meat to the kitchen.
Chi Yu followed to help.
Tang Jing, meanwhile, took the cloth bag into her room, pulled out a small notebook from the drawer, and started recording the day’s accounts. After finishing, she tucked the notebook back into the drawer.
With the clothes sold out, she’d have to restock in the afternoon otherwise, there’d be nothing to sell tomorrow.
After lunch, while the rest of the village was napping, Tang Jing quietly went back to town to buy more clothes, this time picking up a few extra pieces.
In the evening, Gu Sihuan came by again, looking like she had something to say but hesitating.
“What’s wrong, Sisi?” Tang Jing asked.
Without waiting for a reply, Tang Jing had already guessed what it was about. According to the original story, there was only one event happening around this time Gu Sihuan was going to her uncle’s place in a neighboring city to look for a job.
Sure enough, Gu Sihuan brought it up. “My mom has already talked to my uncle. I’m leaving tomorrow. Nanshu, could you see me off at the station?”
Tang Jing thought about the dozen or so outfits she had yet to try on and hesitated.
Seeing her hesitate, Gu Sihuan grew displeased. “Qin Nanshu, now that you’re hanging around with that little mute, you’ve forgotten all about me, haven’t you? I just asked you to take me to the bus station, and you won’t even do that. All that talk about liking me was just lies.”
Tang Jing’s first reaction was to look around. This time she checked carefully, no one was hiding in the grass or behind the trees. With a headache, she had to say, “Sisi, can you think about the setting before you say these things? Have you forgotten what happened a few days ago?”
Gu Sihuan shut her mouth but was still visibly upset. “I just feel like you’re not on my side anymore. Once I go to the city, who knows how long it’ll be before we see each other again.”
“I’ll take you,” Tang Jing said. “I’ll see you off tomorrow. What time exactly?”
“The bus leaves at seven in the morning.” Hearing that Tang Jing would accompany her, Gu Sihuan immediately brightened up.
Tang Jing was actually relieved it was so early, it wouldn’t interfere with her business. She nodded. “Fine.”
Truthfully, Gu Sihuan didn’t need Tang Jing to take her. It was just that her family members were either busy with work or out wandering, and no one would bother to see her off. The walk from the village to the town’s bus station took over an hour, and then another half-hour by bus to the city, all of which would cost money.
Gu Sihuan didn’t have much pocket money to spare, so she pinched every penny she could.
Once settled, Gu Sihuan happily headed back.
Tang Jing tugged at the corner of her mouth, then turned around only to spot Chi Yu standing not far behind her.
