The Abused Heroine Stops Pretending [Quick Transmigration] - Chapter 77.2
As Tang Jing sat by the window with a cup of water, she noticed her senior and the little zombie were still absorbing the crystal cores with their eyes closed. Every time they absorbed a core, they went through a period of weakness afterward.
By the time dawn approached, the two zombies opened their eyes. Tang Jing checked the time and realized their recovery from the weakness phase was faster than the last time they had absorbed cores.
She wondered if, as their levels increased, this period of weakness would continue to shorten.
After breakfast the next morning, they set off again.
The rain had delayed them by a day, so according to their original plan, they needed to make up for lost time in the coming days.
With electricity cut off and no signal, their only source of news was the radio.
Two months had passed since the virus outbreak. In that time, cities around the world had fallen, followed by the establishment of one survivor base after another.
After two months of construction, these bases were gradually becoming more organized. The radio broadcasted updates about each base daily.
The S City base they were heading to now had a survivor population of thirty thousand.
“More and more people are rushing to these bases. I wonder if the supplies will become overburdened as the numbers grow, and if that might lead to some trouble,” Tang Jing said.
“It’s inevitable,” Su Zhen replied. “With such a sudden population surge, reforms will definitely be implemented to ensure fair distribution.”
As for whether these reforms would be good or bad, no one could say for sure.
For now, they could only take things one step at a time. Although the radio broadcasted good news every day, no one truly knew the real situation inside the bases.
They traveled by day and rested at night. On the seventh day, they were blocked on the highway, the road ahead was completely jammed with cars, stretching at least several dozen meters, with over a hundred vehicles piled up.
When Tang Jing and the others saw the situation from a distance, they stopped immediately, not daring to advance further.
Along the way, they had encountered too many incidents that defied human nature. Fortunately, they had remained vigilant and cautious, allowing them to make it this far relatively unscathed.
Now, their path forward was blocked. The sheer scale of the obstruction didn’t seem man-made, it was too massive. The only explanation was that during the initial virus outbreak, people had been fleeing in panic. An accident must have occurred among the leading vehicles, causing a pileup, but for some reason, none of them had managed to escape.
Su Zhen had a bad feeling. Grabbing the walkie-talkie, he ordered, “Turn around.”
But as soon as he spoke, a massive black shadow emerged from the wreckage ahead. It leaped onto the roof of a car and began sprinting toward them on all fours.
“Go!” Su Zhen commanded the moment he saw what it was.
But the creature was too fast, far too fast for them to escape.
“Prepare to fight,” Su Zhen said.
There was no time to run. Rather than being passive, it was better to take the initiative. Maybe then, they’d have a sliver of a chance.
“What the hell is that?” Zhou Tiantian was stunned. The thing resembled an ape, but not quite because this monster had a tail and a spine covered in spikes.
“A hybrid zombie?” Su Zhen studied the creature carefully, his expression grave.
This was the first time since their escape that they had encountered a zombie in an animal form. And judging by its appearance, it seemed to be a fusion of several different zombie types.
This was not good news for them.
What unsettled Su Zhen even more was that none of the major bases had reported anything like this. Had they not discovered such zombies yet, or were they hiding something?
Bang! Bang!
At this point, it didn’t matter if the gunshots attracted more zombies their survival depended on taking down this one.
This was a strength-type zombie. Every step it took made the ground tremble. Its crimson eyes sent chills down Tang Jing and the others’ spines. “An advanced zombie?”
Xu Yushu and the little zombie had their ropes untied. Once freed, they didn’t need orders, they charged straight into battle.
Xu Yushu and the little zombie engaged the monster in close combat, while Tang Jing and the others fired whenever they had a clear shot. But the zombie’s hide was too thick their bullets only penetrated slightly, far from lethal.
Ye Yuanhua assembled a sniper rifle and took position. “Keep it distracted. I’ll take the shot.”
“Got it.”
Gunfire, the zombie’s furious roars, the scene descended into chaos.
They had been fighting for so long, yet not a single zombie appeared in the vicinity. Either the zombies were too afraid to come out due to the presence of a high-level zombie, or all the zombies within a radius of dozens of miles had been devoured by the one before them.
Whichever the case, it left them unable to let their guard down.
Xu Yushu and the little zombie had been leveling up continuously and were now at a mid-to-high level. But against this high-level zombie, they were clearly at a disadvantage. Fortunately, Tang Jing had been interfering from the sidelines, allowing the two zombies to keep fighting. Otherwise, they would have already been torn apart by this ape-like zombie.
Tang Jing remained vigilant, constantly monitoring the danger her senior and the little zombie were in. After spending so much time together, they had developed a bond especially Tang Jing, who had grown close to Xu Yushu and the little zombie. The two zombies, in turn, had come to rely on her. That was why Tang Jing was the most anxious right now.
Over on the other side, Ye Yuanhua held his breath as he fired his gun. Each time he took a shot, the zombie would lunge toward him in retaliation, but Tang Jing and Xu Yushu managed to disrupt its attacks every time.
The zombie grew increasingly agitated. Though its attacks became more ferocious, they also became more erratic, full of openings which was a good thing for Tang Jing and the others.
Just when victory seemed within reach, the zombie suddenly ignored Xu Yushu and Tang Jing’s interference and charged straight toward Ye Yuanhua. The reason was a bloody hole in the back of its neck, where a bullet was lodged.
But beneath that bullet, several others were stacked together. Every shot Ye Yuanhua had fired had landed in the exact same spot. With marksmanship like that, no wonder he had been hired as Professor Su Zhen’s bodyguard.
The zombie sensed the threat and knew exactly who posed the greatest danger to it. So it lunged straight for Ye Yuanhua.
“Ah Yuan, watch out!” Su Zhen, realizing the zombie’s trajectory, fired repeatedly at the charging creature. His usually calm and composed face twisted with panic as he shouted, “Ah Yuan, run!”
Hearing the fear in Su Zhen’s voice, Ye Yuanhua threw his gun aside and rolled down a nearby slope just as the zombie attacked.
The zombie’s attack missed. Enraged, it pounded its chest and glared down the slope with its crimson eyes.
“Ah Yuan!” Su Zhen continued firing as he ran toward the slope.
The zombie turned its head toward him.
“Su-ge, be careful!” Tang Jing immediately warned.
Xu Yushu and the little zombie rushed over from the other side.
But the enraged zombie’s combat power had surged. The moment Xu Yushu and the little zombie got close, they were swatted away like flies.
Tang Jing glanced over in panic, confirming that her senior and the little zombie were unharmed before gritting her teeth and drawing her long blade.
“Su-ge, distract it,” Tang Jing said, her eyes darkening.
“What are you planning?” Su Zhen, sensing something off about her stance, forced himself to calm down despite his panic.
“Just keep its attention on you,” Tang Jing replied before clamping the blade between her teeth and crouching into a sprinting position.
Su Zhen instantly understood her intention. Pressing his lips together, he glanced down the slope where Ye Yuanhua had rolled his condition unknown. Xu Yushu and the little zombie were also exhausted. If they didn’t risk everything now, they would all die here.
“Be careful,” Su Zhen said before repositioning himself, raising his gun, and aiming at the zombie’s eye. With a loud bang, the bullet shot toward its target.
Sensing the danger, the zombie raised its hand to shield its eyes.
Seizing the opportunity, Tang Jing swiftly closed the distance and leaped onto its back.
Without Ye Yuanhua’s sharpshooting skills, her only way to take down this zombie was with her long blade.
Ye Yuanhua had already cracked open a wound on the zombie’s nape, all she needed was to drive her knife in there for the kill.
The zombie sensed something on its back and flailed its arms to reach it, but its massive build made it impossible for its limbs to stretch far enough.
Its constant thrashing made it hard for Tang Jing to keep her balance, let alone climb up.
Seeing this, Su Zhen fired another shot at the zombie’s eyes.
Sensing danger, the zombie reflexively covered its eyes again.
Seizing the opportunity, Tang Jing scrambled upward quickly.
To keep the zombie from recovering, Su Zhen continued firing relentlessly.
Zhou Tiantian, who had been hiding in the car earlier, now rushed out and tried shooting as well. Though her shots missed every time, the distraction gave Tang Jing more openings.
When they finally saw her reach the base of the zombie’s neck, Su Zhen and Zhou Tiantian intensified their gunfire.
Xu Yushu and the little zombie stood not far away, staring up at Tang Jing on the zombie’s back. Though their faces showed no expression, their tension for the person clinging to the creature was palpable.
Tang Jing pulled the long knife from between her teeth, steadied herself, and gripped the hilt with both hands. Raising the blade overhead, she drove it down just as the zombie finally reacted, its hand lifting too late to block the strike.
