At that moment, Tang Jing truly wanted to partner with them. Allying with capable people would make the journey safer. So, she explained her senior’s situation.
“There’s also a baby zombie?!” This time, even Su Zhen’s expression flickered with surprise.
“Come here.” Tang Jing led them to the passenger seat.
Sensing her presence, Xu Yushu stirred slightly, lifting her head to look.
Tang Jing took off her sunglasses, allowing Su Zhen and Ye Yuanhua to clearly see her eyes, cold and pale, unmistakably those of a zombie. Their gazes drifted downward to the senior student’s leg, where a small zombie, tightly bound, lay curled up, no larger than a baby.
“Look at his eyes,” Tang Jing prompted.
“A bit… pink?” Su Zhen observed clearly.
Ye Yuanhua caught on quickly. “The zombie at the police station this afternoon also had pink eyes!”
“So this little zombie turned out like this after eating the crystal core you mentioned?” Su Zhen quickly pieced it together.
“I only found out this morning when I saw him swallow the crystal core from a zombie’s brain.” Now that it was out in the open, Tang Jing shared a bit more.
Ye Yuanhua frowned. “But that only works on zombies, not us.”
“Not necessarily. The crystal core must have some effect,” Su Zhen mused thoughtfully.
Tang Jing said, “I have one here, but I need it for something.”
“For her to eat?”
Tang Jing was almost getting used to the other’s sharp thinking. It had to be said talking with smart people was effortless.
Su Zhen asked, “So you’ve been traveling all this time with your senior and junior?” After spending most of the day together, he had deduced that Zhou Tiantian, the junior, knew nothing and was timid likely relying on Lou Jing’s protection the entire way.
And yet, Lou Jing not only carried the burden of a helpless junior but also a zombie senior. He couldn’t help but admire just how capable this girl was.
“Mm,” Tang Jing replied. “My senior can help us detect threats, so we’ve been safe this whole trip.”
This new piece of information surprised Su Zhen. “She listens to you?”
“Obviously not yet,” Tang Jing said, glancing at the senior’s bound hands.
Su Zhen noticed too and shrugged. “Alright then.”
“So…”
“Pleasure working together.” Su Zhen extended his hand.
Tang Jing shook it firmly. “Pleasure working together.”
And just like that, a small team of four humans and two zombies was formed.
That night, they took turns keeping watch and resting, only resuming their journey at the break of dawn.
The darkness of night was when zombies were most active, making travel dangerous. It was better to move during the day when the undead were dormant, allowing them to rest while covering ground killing two birds with one stone.
Zhou Tiantian hadn’t gotten her driver’s license yet, so Tang Jing did her best to teach her along the way. In this new world, there were no traffic laws to worry about just getting the car moving was enough.
Once Zhou Tiantian could drive, Tang Jing could finally rest.
Their journey was a series of stops and starts restocking supplies, refueling the car.
“There’s a gas station five kilometers ahead. Let’s check it out,” Su Zhen’s voice crackled over the walkie-talkie.
“Copy that.”
The car rolled along the highway, flanked by fields of wheat, their heavy heads drooping, full and ripe yet no one left to harvest them.
As the mist cleared, the evening glow painted the earth in warm hues. For a fleeting moment, it almost felt like a road trip rather than a desperate escape.
Zhou Tiantian pressed her face against the window. After everything she’d been through these past days, she still couldn’t fully accept this harsh reality. Her eyes reddened, her voice trembling. “Ajing, do you think things will ever go back to normal?”
It was the first time she had called her by that name since their breakup.
Tang Jing glanced at her through the rearview mirror and answered, “That day will come eventually.”
Now, Zhou Tiantian was just a junior to her, and that awkward atmosphere had already dissipated. Zhou Tiantian had moved on.
She smiled and said, “Looking back, when I confessed to you back then, it was because I saw so many people pursuing you. I just thought I’d give it a try too.”
Tang Jing followed the car ahead as it turned, responding to Zhou Tiantian’s words with nothing more than a quiet “Mm.”
Zhou Tiantian continued, “Actually, it’s quite a coincidence. Back when I was pursuing you, I saw the senior visit you several times.”
“The senior visited me?” Tang Jing frowned, glanced at the passenger seat, and shook his head. “The last time I met her was three months ago when she went for an internship. We haven’t seen each other since.”
“Ah?” Zhou Tiantian was baffled, gripping the seatback. “How is that possible? I saw the senior watching you from the back door of your classroom. I thought she was there to see you. Could she have just been observing you?”
Zhou Tiantian furrowed her brows in thought. “Now that I think about it, it was strange. Every time she looked at you, her expression seemed a bit sad.” She chuckled awkwardly. “You don’t think she liked you, do you?”
Tang Jing pressed his lips together and remained silent.
Seeing that he wasn’t responding, Zhou Tiantian took the hint and stopped talking, settling back into her seat.
The gas station soon came into view. Located near the city, it was bustling with activity. From a distance, they spotted figures moving around. At first, they feared they were zombies, but upon closer inspection, they realized they were fellow survivors.
“Don’t approach yet,” Su Zhen’s voice crackled over the walkie-talkie.
“Understood.”
It was unclear whether these people were friend or foe, and approaching recklessly could lead to an ambush.
Along the way, they had already encountered two other groups. Had they not been vigilant, they could have easily fallen prey to them.
The group at the gas station noticed their vehicle and immediately raised their weapons. Tang Jing and the others tensed up when they saw what they were holding guns. Each of them was armed.
“Let’s go,” Tang Jing said decisively.
Su Zhen agreed. Instead of driving forward, they turned onto another road.
This route would also lead them to the S City base, albeit with a detour.
But they’d rather take the long way than risk a confrontation. The hostile demeanor of that group made it clear they weren’t to be trifled with over a dozen of them, each looking ruthless.
“We’ll find another gas station,” Su Zhen said.
“Copy that.”
