- Chapter 76.1 - Pleasant Cooperation
After swallowing the crystal core, the little zombie grew weak, closing its eyes as if falling asleep.
Fearing any unexpected incidents, Tang Jing tied it up with a rope.
At its current strength, she could still restrain it this way. But in the later stages, once it leveled up, even iron walls and copper barriers wouldn’t be able to hold it back then it would become a disaster for humanity.
She didn’t know whether these zombies, once they gained intelligence, could communicate. If they could, that would be ideal. But if communication failed, the only option would be to eliminate it before it grew any stronger.
Holding the little zombie in her hands, Tang Jing cast a complicated glance in her senior’s direction.
Xu Yushu tilted her head, looking back at her.
Tang Jing smiled, shaking off her thoughts. “Let’s go. We should keep moving.”
Entering the city wasn’t just about finding transportation, she also needed to gather supplies. If she could find a gun, even better.
A long blade was effective against ordinary zombies, but as time passed and more zombies evolved, her weapon would soon become inadequate.
Zhou Tiantian followed closely behind Tang Jing, keeping a wary eye on both the senior and the little zombie while scanning their surroundings. For a brief moment, she regretted her decision, if only she had gone to the shelter with Chen Chang and the others.
But she trusted her instincts. If they told her not to go, then she shouldn’t. Staying with Lou Jing would be safer.
The closer they got to the city center, the more corpses they encountered piled like mountains, rivers of blood flowing beneath, a scene straight out of hell.
Flies and maggots swarmed in thick clusters.
Zhou Tiantian had never witnessed such horror before. In the past few days, she had only seen it from a distance never up close. Now, she couldn’t stop retching.
Tang Jing, however, remained unfazed. Having experienced this once before and even worse, she stayed calm.
Her phone still had signal, so she pulled up a map, searching for the locations of supermarkets and police stations.
“Where are we heading now?” Zhou Tiantian asked, reluctant as she was to enter the city. She didn’t dare refuse outright, if she did, Tang Jing might actually leave her behind.
“First, the supermarket.” After studying the map, Tang Jing set a destination and continued forward.
The police station was on the other side of the city, and going back and forth would waste time. She had already checked, the station was near another exit, which led to the highway. From there, they could reach City S.
As they made their way to the supermarket, they avoided lurking zombies while searching for usable vehicles.
Perhaps luck was on their side. Just before reaching the supermarket, they found a Hummer with the keys still in the ignition. The door was open, but the owner was nowhere in sight.
Tang Jing scanned the area, confirming it was safe before getting in and testing the engine. Once she confirmed it worked, she motioned for Zhou Tiantian to join her, bringing the senior and the little zombie along.
“I’ll sit in the back,” Zhou Tiantian stammered, unwilling to turn her back to the zombies but also too afraid to sit with them. “Let the senior sit in the passenger seat. The little zombie is small she can hold it on her lap.”
Tang Jing had no objections to this arrangement. After fastening the senior’s seatbelt and settling the little zombie, she started the car and drove toward the supermarket.
The zombies lurking in the shadows, drawn by the noise, wandered out, but the car had already sped far away, leaving them to circle aimlessly in place.
There were still people in this city. Along the way, Tang Jing could sense the hidden gazes, but those individuals only peeked from behind their curtains, none daring to make a move. Perhaps they had stockpiled food at home, waiting for the military to eliminate the zombies outside before venturing out. Or perhaps they’d rather starve indoors than take a single step beyond their doors.
The car swerved unsteadily to the supermarket entrance. The door was open, so she drove straight in. As she parked, she noticed something and signaled Zhou Tiantian to stay quiet. Cracking the window slightly, she listened carefully, she hadn’t misheard; there was definitely movement.
Xu Yushu, sitting in the passenger seat, also growled softly in a certain direction, but the sound wasn’t like when she detected zombies, it was more like humans. Tang Jing picked up the long knife at her feet, scanning the surroundings warily.
The figures in the shadows were also on guard against them, and for a while, neither side moved. A stalemate ensued.
After a long pause, footsteps echoed from the corner, the other side had lost patience. Tang Jing kept her eyes fixed warily in that direction. Once she confirmed that her senior and the little zombie had their hats, masks, and gloves securely in place, she relaxed slightly.
On the road ahead, they were bound to encounter small groups. Not everyone would be like Chen Chang and his crew, quick to accept the senior’s presence. To avoid unnecessary trouble, it was better to disguise themselves when possible.
A burly man emerged from the shadows, towering at nearly six and a half feet tall, his massive frame suggesting formidable strength. Tang Jing pushed the car door open and stepped out.
“A woman?” Ye Yuanhua frowned in surprise, glancing toward her car, where two shadowy figures could faintly be seen.
“Lou Jing,” Tang Jing said, signaling her intent not to fight. “May I ask your name, brother?”
“Ye Yuanhua.”
“We’re here to gather some supplies and then leave,” Tang Jing replied. She didn’t know how long they’d been here whether they lived here or, like her group, were just scavenging. Either way, she wouldn’t pry.
“Su Zhen,” Ye Yuanhua called toward the corner.
Now it was Tang Jing’s turn to be surprised. It seemed there were only two of them.
The other person was also male, half a head shorter than Ye Yuanhua around six feet tall wearing gold-rimmed glasses. His meticulously styled hair was slightly disheveled, and his suit, now dirty, clung to him as he walked over to Ye Yuanhua. Nodding at Tang Jing, he spoke calmly, “Hello, Su Zhen.”
“Hello, Lou Jing.”
Ye Yuanhua peered into her car. “Aren’t your other friends coming out?”
Tang Jing waved Zhou Tiantian over. “This is my junior, Zhou Tiantian.” She paused before adding, “The other one is my senior. She’s not feeling well, so I’d rather not have her step out.”
Ye Yuanhua didn’t press further, nodding in acknowledgment.
“We’re also here for supplies,” Su Zhen said. “How are things outside?”
“How did you know I came from outside?” Tang Jing asked.
“It’s school hours. Your accent isn’t local, you came here for university. It’s been days since the outbreak, and judging by your condition, you’ve been on the road for a while.”
Tang Jing hadn’t expected this sharp-eyed elite to deduce so much at a glance.
“You’ve probably heard of the shelters, right?”
Today marks the seventh day since the apocalypse began. Shelters have been established all across the country, so even if you’ve never stepped outside your home, you’d still know about them.
“Of course,” Su Zhen adjusted his glasses and said, “But those places aren’t exactly safe.”
