- Chapter 68 - Taking Medicine Obediently
“Master, it’s me.”
Hearing A-Yue’s voice, Tang Jing relaxed slightly, but the scent of blood immediately made her tense again. “You’re injured?”
“I…” Wu Xingyue wanted to say she was fine, but Tang Jing cut her off. “Come, let’s leave this place first.”
The area was too close to the small wooden hut and could easily be discovered, especially now that Wu Xingyue was injured.
The two of them arrived at a cave. Tang Jing lit a small candle and examined her wounds under its flickering light.
Wu Xingyue removed her outer robe. The black inner garment had concealed it, but once she took it off, the blood-soaked undergarment revealed the extent of her injuries.
Seeing the long, deep gashes, Tang Jing frowned and remained silent as she applied medicine.
Wu Xingyue, knowing she was at fault, didn’t dare make a sound. However, her eyes kept stealing glances at her master. When she noticed Tang Jing about to inspect the wound near her chest, she flinched slightly, her gaze shifting nervously, lips pressed tightly together.
Tang Jing said sternly, “Come here.”
A faint breeze drifted in from the cave entrance, making the candle flame sway.
Wu Xingyue hesitated but eventually inched closer, her body slightly turned away, head lowered.
Tang Jing shifted to face her directly, leaning forward to gently lift the undergarment covering her chest. When she saw the hideous wound not concealed by the chest wrap, her hand trembled slightly, and she looked up at her disciple.
Wu Xingyue had closed her eyes, her face turned away, afraid to meet her master’s stern gaze upon seeing the injury.
But after waiting for what felt like an eternity without any reprimand, she slowly opened her eyes and saw Tang Jing’s expression filled with heartache as she carefully lifted the fabric further, revealing even more gruesome wounds. Tang Jing’s eyes reddened instantly.
“I…” Wu Xingyue wanted to explain, but she feared the truth would frighten her master, leaving her momentarily at a loss.
“Did you remove the demonic parasite?” Tang Jing asked softly while gently applying medicine.
Wu Xingyue froze, then remembered that her master was the revered leader of the Lingyu Palace in the Xianyu Sect and naturally knew some of the rules of the Jiugong Cult.
“Yes,” Wu Xingyue replied, reaching out to lightly grasp the hem of her master’s robe, behaving with utmost obedience.
Seeing her act coquettish, Tang Jing’s heart softened. “That’s good.”
Silence settled in the cave.
By the time Tang Jing finished dressing the last wound, she looked up to find her disciple had already fallen asleep at some point, exhausted from the ordeal.
Removing a demonic parasite required first draining its energy over several days and nights. Only when it was completely weakened could it be dug out with a dagger.
Fortunately, Wu Xingyue had demonic energy protecting her body. Otherwise, she would have withered away before the parasite was exhausted, let alone survived the final extraction, which required demonic energy to shield her heart.
During those days and nights, A-Yue must have suffered terribly.
Tang Jing cradled her in her arms, gently stroking her hair, her eyes brimming with tenderness.
They couldn’t return to the small wooden hut for now. It was unclear how long those people would remain on guard. To avoid detection, the master and disciple stayed in the cave for the next month without venturing out.
Fortunately, Tang Jing had prepared ample food and water in the cave. A pool deep inside provided water for washing, making life relatively convenient.
“Master, here are some fruits.” Wu Xingyue entered the cave, lifting her skirt to sit on the ground before handing over the fruits she had gathered, a smile on her face.
After a month of recuperation, her body had fully recovered.
“Master, your medicine must be running low, right?” Wu Xingyue asked while munching on a fruit.
“Hmm,” Tang Jing replied after swallowing a bite. “No need to buy more medicine.”
“How can that be?” Wu Xingyue grew anxious, her brows furrowing deeply. “Your body hasn’t fully healed yet. You still need the medicine to replenish your strength.”
Tang Jing shook her head and said nothing more.
The journey to town was quite a distance, especially since it required crossing the Dark Forest. In the past, Tang Jing wouldn’t have worried about her disciple venturing out. But ever since Wu Xingyue had been captured by the Nine Palaces Sect not long ago, she didn’t want her disciple straying too far from her sight.
At night, Tang Jing opened her eyes and saw Wu Xingyue preparing to leave. She sat up and called, “A-Yue.”
“Master,” Wu Xingyue stiffened, quickly smoothing her expression into a smile. “Why are you awake?”
Tang Jing fixed her with a piercing gaze. “Where are you going?”
“I…” Wu Xingyue hesitated.
“Come here,” Tang Jing patted the space beside her.
Wu Xingyue pressed her lips together and sat down next to her.
Tang Jing looked at her. “A-Yue, I don’t want the medicine, and I don’t want you to go again.”
“But your body,”
“I know my limits.” Tang Jing lowered her eyes, staring at her pale fingertips. “That medicine won’t help anyway. I’ll recover on my own.”
In the following days, Wu Xingyue didn’t leave again, but she watched her master with growing concern.
Then, one day, when she saw her master lying in bed, her face deathly pale and unable to rise, Wu Xingyue trembled uncontrollably. “Master, Master, look at me.”
Tang Jing frowned, but her eyes remained shut, her body weak. Still, she placed her hand over Wu Xingyue’s and murmured, “Be good.”
Tears finally spilled from Wu Xingyue’s eyes. She cupped her master’s face, pressing her forehead against Tang Jing’s, and whispered, “Master, you must wait for me.”
“Don’t go!” Tang Jing tried to stop her, but darkness swallowed her vision, and she fell unconscious.
She didn’t know how much time had passed when she felt someone lifting her up. The bitter taste in her mouth and the scent of blood in the air made her struggle to open her eyes. Before her was her disheveled disciple, staring at her with anxious worry.
“You!”
“I’m fine.” Seeing her awake, Wu Xingyue finally relaxed, her tense brows smoothing as she smiled. “Master, you still need to listen to me and take your medicine properly.”
Tang Jing smiled too, drinking the medicine in the bowl before murmuring, “Alright.”
Watching her master finish the medicine, Wu Xingyue finally allowed herself to relax. But the moment she did, her legs gave way, and she nearly collapsed. Steadying herself, her first instinct was to look back at her master on the bed.
Seeing Tang Jing sleeping peacefully, Wu Xingyue exhaled in relief and smiled though the smile soon twisted into a pained one. She slumped to the ground, catching her breath.
Though her injuries had healed over the past month, her internal wounds weren’t fully recovered. Along the way, she had been injured by several demonic beasts. But with her master waiting at home, she couldn’t afford to stop and tend to her wounds.
Thankfully, she had rushed back in time. When she returned and saw her unconscious master, she mustered all her strength to brew the medicine as quickly as possible.
“Master.” After washing up and changing into clean clothes, Wu Xingyue lay down beside Tang Jing, gently embracing her before finally drifting into sleep.
