- Chapter 57 - But Master hasn't even married me yet
“Master, that demoness is utterly shameless! She resorted to every means to threaten me, forcing you to marry her.” Wen Mingyu’s entire body radiated resentment as she muttered under her breath, “You’re adored by so many, yet she treats you like this just thinking about it makes me furious.”
Tang Jing walked along the country path with her hands behind her back, undisturbed by her disciple’s words. All her attention was fixed on those familiar eyes.
At this thought, she turned to glance at her young disciple especially at those eyes.
There was something peculiar in her master’s gaze, and Wen Mingyu, puzzled, looked down at herself to ensure nothing was amiss. When she raised her head again, her master had already averted her eyes.
Uncertain of the meaning behind that glance, she scratched her head in confusion.
“Master, what should we do now? We still haven’t found those missing villagers.”
“Wait.” Tang Jing headed in the direction of the old woman’s house.
“Wait?” Wen Mingyu tilted her head, perplexed. “What are we waiting for?”
Tang Jing said no more, leaving Wen Mingyu no choice but to follow, still full of questions.
That night, Wen Mingyu was roused from sleep by noise. Sitting up, she saw her master seated by the window, while rustling sounds grew louder outside.
Curious, she approached and followed her master’s gaze. When she spotted the villagers emerging from the forest, she gasped in shock. “Why are these villagers?”
Tang Jing stood up, no longer looking outside, and took a seat at the table. “We can leave tomorrow.”
Still brimming with curiosity, Wen Mingyu sat down beside her and asked, “Master, what exactly is going on?”
Earlier, when they had been taken into the manor, Tang Jing had noticed the imprisoned villagers. Their faces bore no signs of suffering, and the demons had even served them fine meals.
At the time, she hadn’t understood. But later, from the words of the demoness in disguise, she learned that Elder Qiu Yue had brought them here to lure someone naturally, that someone was her.
After the wedding ceremony, when her disciple Wen Mingyu came to rescue her, Elder Qiu Yue had made no effort to stop them. Clearly, her objective had been achieved.
Thus, the threatened villagers were now being released.
Thinking of those familiar eyes, Tang Jing’s brows furrowed almost imperceptibly. She wondered if she was overthinking it.
Receiving no answer from her master, Wen Mingyu began speculating on her own. “Well, these demonic cultivators are all strange anyway. This trip was practically a waste of time.”
Tang Jing said, “Go back to sleep. We set off tomorrow.”
Late into the night, the bright moon hung high, casting a silvery glow over the land.
Tang Jing sat by the window once more, tilting her head slightly to gaze at the moon.
Then, from the corner of her eye, she caught a flash of red at the edge of the forest. Turning her head, she locked eyes with Elder Qiu Yue, clad in crimson. For a moment, neither moved.
Soon, the red figure in the forest shifted slightly before turning and walking away.
That silhouette felt achingly familiar to Tang Jing. Her hands, resting on her lap, clenched tightly as she lowered her lashes, concealing the emotions in her eyes.
The next day, after confirming that all the villagers had returned, the master and disciple revisited the forest. The stronghold from the day before was now empty not a soul remained.
“She actually ran away.” Wen Mingyu rolled her eyes and muttered under her breath.
“Let’s go.”
After walking quite a distance, Tang Jing glanced back once more, feeling as though everything from the previous night had been nothing but a dream.
The two soon returned to their sect and reported the details of their journey to the sect leader. Upon learning that Elder Qiu Yue of the Demon Sect had acted with intent, the leader raised an eyebrow but said nothing further, merely nodding. “Understood. You may both rest now.”
On their way back, Wen Mingyu asked, “Master, is this matter really over just like that?” She couldn’t shake the feeling that ending things this way left something unresolved.
“Hmm.”
“But… that witch…” Wen Mingyu was still indignant, puffing her cheeks as she spoke. “You even held a wedding ceremony with her. How could you just let her go like this? It’s such a loss.”
Tang Jing froze, momentarily speechless.
Unaware of her master’s expression, Wen Mingyu continued walking ahead, lost in her own thoughts. “Master hasn’t even married me yet.”
Because she was far ahead, Tang Jing didn’t hear her, but a few young disciples passing by overheard and widened their eyes in shock. Catching sight of the Lingyu Sect Master ahead, they quickly lowered their heads and hurried past.
Wen Mingyu, absorbed in her own musings, didn’t notice the young disciples.
Though Tang Jing appeared to be gazing into the distance, seemingly deep in thought, her peripheral vision had caught the young disciples. Yet, she pretended not to see them.
The reason was simple, these disciples were from Pei Yujun’s palace.
Tang Jing and Pei Yujun had never gotten along, though the animosity was mostly one-sided on Pei Yujun’s part, stemming from the sect leader favoring Tang Jing over her.
For years, Pei Yujun had occasionally sent people to Tang Jing’s palace to dig up any leverage she could use against her.
Unfortunately, the Lingyu Palace Master had always been ascetic and detached, spending her days either meditating in her palace or lecturing her disciples. There was simply no dirt to be found.
But now, a golden opportunity had fallen into Pei Yujun’s lap. Of course, she would seize it not just seize it, but exploit it to its fullest potential, especially if it meant toppling the Lingyu Sect Master in the process.
And thus, the next crucial plot point unfolded: the exposure of the master-disciple romance, leading to one being expelled from the sect and the other thrown into the Dark Abyss Valley for confinement.
