- Chapter 52 - The Bride in Red
That night, the two stayed at the old woman’s house.
There was only one bed in the room, which Tang Jing offered to Wen Mingyu, while she herself sat on the sole chair in the room, closing her eyes to rest.
Wen Mingyu lay on her side, her arm tucked beneath her head as she gazed at the figure on the chair. Moonlight streamed in through the window, casting a silvery glow over her master.
“Master, what do you think that bride in the woods is? Could it be a demon?” At this, Wen Mingyu sat up, her drowsiness completely gone.
Tang Jing opened her eyes. “Hmm.”
“Then,” Wen Mingyu hesitated. “Should we go into the woods to take a look?”
“No.” Tang Jing glanced out the window, which happened to face the forest.
Wen Mingyu was puzzled. “Why not? As cultivators, aren’t we supposed to vanquish demons whenever we encounter them?”
“To strike without understanding the reason is that how I’ve taught you?” Tang Jing’s cold gaze swept over her.
Wen Mingyu shrank guiltily under the blanket. Though her master was usually kind to her, when she was strict, it was truly daunting. No matter how spoiled Wen Mingyu usually acted, she didn’t dare challenge her master’s authority at this moment.
Tang Jing said sternly, “Copy the sect rules a hundred times when we return.”
Hearing this, Wen Mingyu’s scalp prickled, but she didn’t dare argue. She could only reply meekly, “Yes.”
The wind swirled, rustling the leaves and sweeping dried foliage into spirals on the ground. The howling gusts were especially piercing in the quiet of the night.
“Master…” Wen Mingyu trembled, so frightened that she burrowed entirely under the covers.
Tang Jing heard noises outside and wondered if the old woman had gotten up. Worried that something might have happened, she stood and said, “I’ll go check.”
Wen Mingyu opened her mouth as if to say something, but in the end, she remained silent.
Tang Jing pushed the door open and stepped out, spotting a candle lit in the main room. The old woman was hobbling toward the door.
With the eerie winds raging outside, the old woman would surely struggle if she ventured out. Tang Jing quickly stepped forward. “Elder, is something the matter?”
“The vegetables under the eaves haven’t been brought in yet. I’m afraid it might rain soon.”
Normally, they were left outside to avoid the hassle of moving them back and forth, but the wind was too strong tonight, and a heavy downpour seemed likely.
“I’ll take care of it,” Tang Jing said before heading out.
Inside, Wen Mingyu, still waiting anxiously for her master to return, grew too afraid to stay alone and eventually went out as well. Seeing Tang Jing moving the vegetables, she joined in to help.
Once all the vegetables were safely inside, the wind grew even fiercer, and rain began to pour.
The old woman said, “Thank you, Immortals.”
Noticing how lightly dressed the old woman was, Tang Jing urged, “Please go back inside and rest, Elder.”
Tang Jing and Wen Mingyu followed her back in. As Tang Jing was about to close the window, she glanced toward the woods and caught sight of that same flash of red from earlier in the day.
“Master?” Wen Mingyu, puzzled by her master’s stillness, came closer.
Tang Jing shut the window. “Go to sleep.”
“Oh.”
Late into the night, Wen Mingyu hazily sensed her master leaving but was too drowsy to pay it much mind. She simply turned over and continued sleeping.
After stepping outside, Tang Jing walked toward the woods, holding an umbrella. The red figure seemed to be waiting for her, lingering at the forest’s edge.
As she approached, the red shadow slowly retreated deeper into the woods, clearly intending to lure her in.
At this point, if it were Tang Jing, she would have turned and left without hesitation. Though she prided herself on being able to take on the woman in the red bridal gown, who knew what kind of trap might be waiting for her inside?
But due to the rules of the plot, she couldn’t act on her own will now, she had to follow the script.
Having experienced too many worlds, she couldn’t quite recall the exact dangers lurking in these woods, only that they existed.
Now, whether there was danger or not, she had no choice but to proceed.
Suddenly, a woman’s laughter echoed through the forest, languid and carefree. “Palace Master Lingyu, are you really going to come in?”
Tang Jing remained silent, continuing forward toward the source of the voice.
Hidden among the trees, the woman in the red bridal gown paused, her smile faltering. A hint of nervousness crept into her tone, making her words stumble. “Palace Master Lingyu, you.”
Tang Jing tapped the ground lightly with her foot and, in an instant, flew straight to where the red-clad woman stood.
The woman in red was taken aback, taking a step back. As she moved, her crimson bridal veil swayed slightly, revealing a glimpse of cold, pale skin beneath.
“Who are you?” Tang Jing asked coldly.
The woman in red steadied herself, regaining her composed demeanor. “Why don’t you take a guess, Palace Master Lingyu?”
Though her expression was calm, her heart was already brimming with anticipation.
