- Chapter 50 - Descending the Mountain
Due to her injuries, the next few days in her palace were rather quiet. The only one who came to speak with her was Wen Mingyu, while the other disciples continued their cultivation.
Su Wanqiu was usually strict not only with her disciples but also with herself.
Despite her injuries these past few days, she never neglected her cultivation. Every time Wen Mingyu visited, she looked upon her master with admiration and an affection that should not have been there.
Today, her wounds had finally healed, and Tang Jing found it hard to stay confined to her quarters any longer. More importantly, she didn’t want Wen Mingyu to keep disturbing her.
Unfortunately, just as she tried to evade her little disciple’s persistent attention, the girl appeared again.
“Master!” Seeing her awake, Wen Mingyu happily rushed forward. Afraid she might crash into her, Tang Jing quickly steadied her by the wrist, frowning slightly in disapproval. “Restrain your impulsiveness.”
Wen Mingyu stuck out her tongue, unfazed. Her master was always rigid and distant, but she knew that among all the disciples, she was the most special to her.
This special treatment delighted her.
And so, at some point, she had begun to harbor feelings for her master that went beyond reverence.
Stealing a glance at her master, she lowered her eyes shyly.
Tang Jing took a step forward, ready to leave.
“Master, where are you going?” Seeing her move, Wen Mingyu suddenly remembered the important matter she had come to report.
Instead of answering, Tang Jing asked, “Do you need something?”
Wen Mingyu nodded. “Sect Leader Bu is requesting your presence in the council hall.”
Tang Jing thought for a moment and recalled the agenda. Glancing at Wen Mingyu, she said, “Let’s go.”
“Am I coming too?” Wen Mingyu looked up, her eyes bright with excitement, clearly eager to follow.
Tang Jing said nothing more and strode ahead toward the council hall.
Wen Mingyu hurried after her, her steps light with joy.
In the council hall, the sect leader and the masters of the other palaces had already gathered, waiting only for Su Wanqiu of the Lingyu Palace.
When they caught sight of her, several palace masters couldn’t help but step forward, their voices filled with concern.
“Su Su, how is your health?”
“Su Su, perhaps you should rest a little longer.”
Someone nearby nudged them with an elbow, giving them a meaningful look.
Noticing the figure trailing behind Su Wanqiu, they quickly schooled their expressions, clearing their throats and adopting solemn tones.
“Since Palace Master Su has arrived, let us begin today’s meeting.”
Wen Mingyu kept her head bowed from the moment she entered, not daring to look up. Though she dared to be bold in front of her master, she was the picture of obedience in the presence of the other palace masters and the sect leader.
Sect Leader Bu Qing lifted his eyelids to glance at Wen Mingyu before disregarding her. Turning to the others, he said, “Yesterday, unusual activity was detected in the southeast. I dispatched scouts to investigate, and today they returned with news.” He paused. “Disciples of the Nine Palaces Sect have been sighted again.”
“The Nine Palaces Sect!” The others exchanged uneasy glances. It was hard to believe that the Nine Palaces Sect, like a lingering ghost, continued to wreak havoc in the lands of Yaozhou.
Tang Jing’s eyelid twitched almost imperceptibly so subtly that no one noticed.
Behind her, however, Wen Mingyu pricked up her ears. At the mention of the Nine Palaces Sect, a flash of hatred crossed her eyes, though she concealed it well.
“Sect Leader, the Lingyu Palace volunteers to investigate this matter.” Tang Jing rose and bowed.
Bu Qing frowned.
Before the others from the other palaces could speak up to persuade, Bu Qing raised his hand to stop them and looked at Tang Jing, asking, “Are you still unwell?”
Tang Jing replied, “I’m fine.”
“Go ahead.”
Once outside the council hall, Wen Mingyu became lively again, skipping along. “Master, are we really going down the mountain?”
When the sect leader had ordered their Lingyu Palace to handle the matter, Wen Mingyu had been beyond excited. Of course, what thrilled her more was the chance to investigate what this Nine Palaces Sect really was.
Though the other party hid it well, Tang Jing saw through her thoughts at a glance. However, she didn’t press further.
After all, Wen Mingyu was far from as innocent as she appeared.
Tang Jing flicked her sleeve and walked ahead with her hands behind her back. “Mm.”
Wen Mingyu trotted to keep up. “Master, if this Nine Palaces Sect is so heinous, why don’t all the immortal sects unite to destroy it instead of letting it grow unchecked?”
Tang Jing answered, “A thousand years ago, we did just that.”
Wen Mingyu was surprised. “Then what happened?”
Tang Jing gazed into the distance and said calmly, “The flip side of light is darkness. How do you eradicate it? And even if you try, can you ever truly wipe it out?”
The words were too profound for the young Wen Mingyu to grasp, and she didn’t particularly want to.
Wen Mingyu huffed, “I just want to destroy them all, whether it’s thorough or not.”
Tang Jing continued walking. “When the day comes that you can.”
Since ancient times, darkness had always followed light. What good was destruction? As long as there was profit and selfishness, darkness would continue to thrive.
Two days later, Tang Jing set off down the mountain with Wen Mingyu.
Because the discovery was swift and the disturbance not too great, they sent as few people as possible. In the end, only Tang Jing and her disciple Wen Mingyu were dispatched.
Within two days, the two arrived in the territory of Chunnan Village.
The place was remote, devoid of people during the day. The crops in the fields flourished, and smoke curled from the chimneys of distant farmhouses, it was dinnertime.
“Master, where should we start looking?” Wen Mingyu scanned the surroundings but sensed no demonic energy, her face full of confusion.
Tang Jing, however, looked toward the only household with smoke rising from its chimney. “Let’s go ask them.”
Wen Mingyu didn’t know where her master meant to ask, but she hurried to follow nonetheless.
