- Chapter 5 - The Greatest Obstacles to Slacking Off—The Taro Father and Son
Despite complaining about Taiga’s constant brawling, Taro made an effort to show up every time the teacher called him to the school. Furthermore, he always made sure to investigate the underlying reasons before passing judgment on Taiga’s behavior.
While he often had a headache over Taiga’s penchant for “vigilante justice” punching back at anyone bullying his classmates Taro knew that teaching a child to meet violence with violence was absolutely out of the question.
After school, Taro picked Taiga up to head home.
“Do you want to grab a bite to eat out here, or should we go to Grandma and Grandpa’s for dinner?” Taro asked, looking down at the boy while holding his hand.
“Let’s eat out! I want fried chicken,” Taiga said, skipping along happily.
“Deal. But when we get back, you can’t tell Grandma we had fried chicken. Is it a bargain?” Taro asked.
“Bargain!” Taiga agreed readily.
Taro led Taiga toward a fried chicken shop. While waiting for their order, Taro noticed a very familiar Ultra across the street, leisurely pushing open the door to a café and stepping inside.
Taro checked his watch. It was 3:50 PM. It appeared his friend was skipping work again.
Taro sent him a message: Tregear, are you still at work right now?
Tregear: Of course. What else would I be doing during work hours?
Drinking coffee, apparently. Taro watched the figure pick up his coffee from the counter and take a seat by the window facing the road. If Taro were blind or didn’t know him so well, he might have actually believed that nonsense.
Taro: I’m at the fried chicken shop right across from the café you’re in.
“Tch.” Seeing Taro’s message, Tregear felt a wave of irritation. He had finally managed to sneak out during work hours; why did he always run into Taro? Based on the time, Taro was undoubtedly picking up Taiga from school.
This father-and-son duo was truly the greatest obstacle to his slacking off. Tregear rested his head on his hand, staring at the message. He considered pretending he hadn’t seen it. Just as he was about to temporarily delete Taro from his contacts, another message popped up.
Taro: Taiga is having fried chicken. Do you want to come over and have some with us?
Tregear: I’m coming over now.
Tregear tucked his phone back into his pocket with an air of nonchalance and carried his coffee across the street.
Hm? You say he was about to delete Taro just now? Nonsense. You shouldn’t spread rumors about things that never happened. He was clearly delighted to have “coincidentally” run into his best friend at this time.
It truly was wonderful.
