[TaroTre] My Blind Date is My Childhood Friend - Chapter 11
There is a limit to how long one can stay in shock. By the time Tregear had finished his second cup of coffee and was debating whether to order a third, Taro and Taiga finally snapped out of it.
“Tregear, why on earth did you come to a blind date?” Taro asked curiously. “Don’t tell me you’re actually looking to get married?”
Tregear gave Taro a half-smile and replied, “New regulation from the Science Technology Bureau: anyone going on a blind date during a workday gets a half-day of paid leave.”
“Oh, so that’s it.” For some reason, Taro felt a wave of relief wash over him. Only then did he find the mental energy to decide on his own drink.
Since Taiga was still young and couldn’t have caffeine, Taro ordered a glass of milk for the boy and a hot cocoa for himself. Coffee was far too bitter for Taro’s liking.
“Looking at you and the brat, I take it your other blind dates haven’t been going well?” Tregear looked at the father and son and suddenly chuckled.
“Calling it ‘not well’ is an understatement it’s been a total disaster.” Once the topic was broached, Taro’s urge to vent became unstoppable. Perhaps because it was Tregear sitting across from him, Taro felt completely relaxed as he began grumbling about the bizarre behavior of his previous dates. Taiga would chime in occasionally to add details or share “tea” from the dates he hadn’t attended, recounting the eccentric characters his father had encountered.
Tregear listened with remarkable patience, nodding along from time to time.
When Taro finally stopped to catch his breath, Tregear remarked, “No wonder. Given my profile, it’s a surprise I was even matched with you.”
Seeing the confused expressions on Taro and Taiga’s faces, Tregear explained further: “When Marie came to ask me about candidates, she was dropping hints left and right, asking if there was anyone in the Science Bureau who wasn’t too busy and liked children preferably a woman. I gave her some names and thought that was the end of it. Then one day, out of the blue, she asked me, ‘Tregear, would you like to go on a blind date?'”
Even though Tregear occasionally skipped work, as a scientist, he was still incredibly busy. Furthermore, when it came to Taiga, Tregear loved to tease the boy; back when he lacked a sense of proportion, he could make Taiga cry in a matter of seconds, leaving Taro to clean up the mess. And that was to say nothing of the fact that Tregear was male.
“Don’t say that. You’re a great guy, Tregear,” Taro said, waving his hand in disagreement. “If anything, I’m the one getting the better end of the deal here. After all, you’re a brilliant scientist with a good personality. If the Land of Light held a poll for the ‘Most Desirable Ultra to Marry,’ you’d definitely be in the top five.”
Sitting to the side sipping his hot milk, Taiga’s mind was filled with question marks. Is the person Dad is talking about really the Tregear I know? And why did he accept the idea of dating Tregear so quickly?
Little Taiga didn’t understand, so he could only lower his head and focus on finishing his milk.
