System, You Didn't Say the Villain Can Read Minds! - Chapter 23
Chapter 23
◎Can I Sleep Now?◎
Guided by the System, Mo Jiu found their temporary accommodation just before it got completely dark.
Before settling in, the two cleared out the surrounding Abominations. Even so, an ordinary house was certainly not as sturdy as the shelter. To be safe, it was better for one person to stand guard at night.
“I’ll keep watch tonight,” Mo Jiu told Yun Wenzhou. “You were up all night yesterday, so you must be exhausted. Get some good rest.”
‘Go to sleep quickly, go to sleep quickly, go to sleep quickly.’
Yun Wenzhou sat on the edge of the bed, looking up at Mo Jiu standing in front of her. She slightly opened her mouth, but ultimately said nothing.
Sister wants her to fall asleep quickly.
She didn’t want to make her sister feel awkward.
But she was too curious—Why exactly did Sister want to destroy the shelter?
Even though she herself wanted to kill everyone in the shelter, it was only a thought. Who doesn’t have thoughts? She also wanted to lock her sister up, kneel on the floor begging for her forgiveness, and refuse to let her go…
But in reality, if certain things were actually done, neither the subsequent developments nor the price to be paid would be within her control.
She knew her sister was not afraid of death. The day her sister awakened her ability, she appeared terrified, but her inner voice was calm. She even had the presence of mind to evaluate whether her chest was soft when she clung to her.
It wouldn’t be surprising what kind of things such a sister would do if pushed too far.
Therefore, she, who was constantly blaspheming her sister in her mind, could only restrain all her crazy thoughts and stay by her sister’s side, hoping only to be looked at a little more.
The shelter issue was the same. She knew how kind her sister was, so even if she truly wanted to kill everyone in the shelter, she wouldn’t do it in front of her sister.
But such a sister actually… wanted to destroy the shelter herself?
Yun Wenzhou pursed her lips, finally forcing out a sound, but it was a sentence completely unrelated to what she was curious about: “Sister, can you give me a goodnight kiss?”
Mo Jiu: “…”
‘You are say what?’
“Haha,” Yun Wenzhou was amused by Mo Jiu’s startled English thought, but she had no intention of retracting her request. “As long as Sister gives me a kiss, I’ll fall asleep immediately. Is that okay?”
‘You’re resorting to threats now.’
—A threat? Perhaps.
—If you want me to sleep soundly, give me what I want.
Mo Jiu secretly sighed. She didn’t want to fulfill Yun Wenzhou’s request. She didn’t want to get too intimate with her, to the point where she couldn’t extricate herself in the future. But she had no time or inclination to bargain with her right now, so in the end, she said nothing. She reached out, pinched Yun Wenzhou’s chin, lowered her head, and gently kissed Yun Wenzhou’s forehead.
Yun Wenzhou froze.
She felt the warm, soft touch on her forehead, like being electrocuted. A tingling sensation spread throughout her body, a shiver of pleasure.
She hadn’t expected her sister to actually grant her request, even though her sister was so surprised inside…
“Can you sleep now?” Mo Jiu asked in her ear after the kiss.
Mo Jiu still held her chin, in a gesture that was hard to tell if it was a threat or a tease.
Yun Wenzhou’s heart thumped. She resisted the urge to reach out and hug the person in front of her, and murmured, “Mhm.”
Restrain yourself. Must restrain yourself.
Don’t push your luck.
Those two annoying people had left. She and her sister had a long future ahead.
Thinking this, Yun Wenzhou obediently lay down in bed.
Mo Jiu tucked her in, turned, and left the room without a hint of reluctance, as if the person who had just kissed her was not her.
Yun Wenzhou felt a wave of emptiness.
—Honestly, at least say goodnight to me.
Mo Jiu sat idle in the living room for over an hour.
With no electricity, there were no lights, and the unsettling darkness was everywhere.
Only the System kept her company.
Mo Jiu: Is Xiaozhou asleep?
System: She appears to be asleep. I cannot determine if she is truly asleep.
Mo Jiu: The location of the S-class Abomination.
System: 320 meters to the east.
Mo Jiu got up from the sofa, tip-toed into Yun Wenzhou’s room, and quietly called out, “Xiaozhou.”
A steady breathing sound was her reply.
“Xiaozhou.” Second confirmation.
The breathing was still steady, and the person in bed remained motionless.
“Xiaozhou.” Third confirmation.
The same result.
‘Good, let’s go!’
Mo Jiu said this internally, leaving the room and running downstairs at the fastest speed, heading east.
Mo Jiu: System, if Xiaozhou encounters danger, let me know. I’ll rush back immediately.
System: Received.
Mo Jiu thought that with the System helping her watch the world, she didn’t need to worry about anything and just had to complete the mission as planned.
However, she forgot that the System was a piece of artificial stupidity.
She only instructed the System to alert her when Yun Wenzhou encountered danger, not when Yun Wenzhou woke up.
So she didn’t know that shortly after she went downstairs, a silhouette appeared by the window.
Yun Wenzhou, dressed in a black dress, stood by the window, looking down at Mo Jiu’s retreating figure. She was almost one with the darkness.
—I’ll see for myself how you plan to destroy the shelter, Sister.
Mo Jiu hadn’t run far when she spotted her target, the S-class Abomination.
Its silhouette in the darkness was like a Godzilla, about two people tall.
It stood motionlessly, directly facing Mo Jiu.
Moonlight outlined its muscular legs and a dinosaur-like tail. A ring of spindle-shaped objects on its neck emitted an eerie red light. She didn’t know what they were.
As she got closer, Mo Jiu finally saw clearly that the necklace-like ring was actually eyes! Countless eyes were arranged horizontally in a somewhat uneven circle around its neck.
And its raised head was a huge human hand clenched into a fist.
As Mo Jiu approached, the countless black vertical pupils in the red whites of the eyes on the neck of this behemoth moved, simultaneously focusing on Mo Jiu, giving her goosebumps.
The hand-like head then unfolded, revealing scythe-like claws—a dangerous signal that it was preparing to attack!
Seeing the monster that wore eyes as a necklace about to rush and attack her, Mo Jiu quickly raised her hand and used her ability to restrain it in place.
According to the System’s deduction, her ability was at least SS-class or higher, yet she felt strained controlling this S-class Abomination.
How to describe this feeling?
It was like a screw had been tightened as far as it could go, yet it was still loose.
The behemoth’s movements became jerky and sluggish, yet it was genuinely moving! It stubbornly turned toward Mo Jiu’s location!
Mo Jiu: … Are you sure this is S-class?
System: Yes.
Mo Jiu: Are there any other S-class ones nearby?
I have a bad feeling about feeding this S-class Abomination the crystal! Can I switch targets, please!
System: There is only this one within a 500-meter radius.
Damn it, no choice!
Mo Jiu clicked her tongue, then no longer hesitated. She took out the Abomination Crystal—enough to upgrade this S-class Abomination to SS-class—from her space and threw it at it.
The Abomination opened the gaping, bloody maw on its abdomen under her control, swallowing the crystal with a crunch-crunch-crunch sound of chewing.
And just as Mo Jiu was about to control it to move toward the shelter, a voice sounded from behind her.
“How can you not bring me along for something so fun, Sister?”
Mo Jiu was startled, almost losing control of the Abomination.
That voice… was Yun Wenzhou.
‘Help! Why does it have to be her?’
‘I’d rather it be Ye Lan!’
If it were Ye Lan, she could pretend to be attacked, team up with Ye Lan to kill this freshly upgraded SS-class Abomination, and then pretend nothing happened.
But it had to be Yun Wenzhou…
Mo Jiu mechanically turned her head and saw the face that was still flawlessly beautiful even in the darkness.
Yun Wenzhou floated a meter in the air, looking down at her, a smile on her face that held no warmth.
Beautiful, yet dangerous, like a rose full of thorns.
—Oh, really? You’d rather see Ye Lan than me?
Mo Jiu nervously swallowed.
‘Why now of all times… A little earlier or a little later would have been fine, but why now… Wait, was I being followed?’
Mo Jiu suddenly realized: “You followed me?”
“I was just worried about Sister.” Yun Wenzhou subtly admitted it, then asked with a smile, “Sister, if I’m not mistaken, are you feeding the Abomination Abomination Crystals? Is that enough? Do you need me to help you collect more?”
“No need. Go back to sleep.” Mo Jiu responded coldly, while controlling the Abomination to move toward the shelter.
However, as the Abomination grew stronger, it became increasingly difficult to control.
Mo Jiu felt her stamina draining at an exaggerated rate, but the more it drained, the more she couldn’t let go.
‘This Abomination is very strong! If I relax my control over it, Xiaozhou will be in danger!’
Yun Wenzhou’s long eyelashes trembled slightly. The smile on her face faded a bit. When she spoke again, she shed the flippancy and sarcasm in her tone, becoming much more serious: “Sister, what exactly are you doing? Tell me.”
Mo Jiu remained silent.
She truly didn’t want Yun Wenzhou to be involved, but since she had been discovered, forcibly brushing her off would only be counterproductive.
Finally, she sighed and chose to “tell the truth”: “I’m going to destroy the shelter.”
“Why?”
“What else could it be? A place that can’t accommodate us has no need to exist.”
‘Stop asking. I have my reasons for having to do this.’
“Sister is lying,” Yun Wenzhou calmly exposed her. “Sister is not the type of person who would do this.”
“Heh, you’re always like this, thinking you understand me, arbitrarily viewing everything I do for you as protection, and arbitrarily deciding my personality. Who am I? Who gave you the right to decide that?”
Mo Jiu’s hand began to tremble slightly from physical exhaustion, and her voice sounded fierce from the strain.
Yet her inner thoughts were:
‘Does she know what kind of person I am?’
‘Why? I haven’t been good to her at all.’
‘I owe her too much and will continue to owe her.’
“That idiotic Director. If I weren’t no match for Ye Lan, I would have killed her right then and there!”
‘But that would implicate you.’
“And that former supervisor, he better be dead. If he’s not, I’m going to send him on his way now!”
‘No matter what, I must destroy the shelter.’
‘Although I don’t want to kill people, as long as Xiaozhou is safe, everyone else doesn’t matter.’
It’s all fake, it’s all fake!
Mo Jiu controlled the SS-class Abomination to run toward the shelter while running alongside it.
She wanted to be faster, even faster, because her stamina was genuinely close to giving out.
However…
System: Please note, Host, the S-class Abomination has been successfully upgraded to SS-class.
Following this alert from the System, the Abomination forcefully stomped the ground with its massive foot. With a “BOOM—,” the earth shook!
Mo Jiu’s steps faltered. Her pupils suddenly contracted because she clearly felt that the line connecting her to the Abomination had snapped.
‘…D*mn it!’
The Abomination, finally free from control, let out a furious roar. Immediately after, it spun and leaped with extreme speed, pouncing toward Mo Jiu. Its scythe-like claws swung at her, and the resulting gust of wind directly sent her flying into the air!
“Sister!” Yun Wenzhou cried out in alarm. Without thinking, she pursued her at top speed, catching her body, embracing her tightly, and shielding her in her arms.
The tip of a claw grazed Yun Wenzhou’s back. Blood splattered.
