- Chapter 68 - Meeting in the Pouring Rain
They booked a private room, and the whole dorm celebrated together for Cheng Xiaoxin.
Ling Shuang and Song Jia were the mic hogs, belting out love songs with all their might.
“I’ll love you even if I die~~~”
“I never want to see you drinking alone late at night again~~~”
“She’s just my little sister~~~”
Xu Zhizhi and Cheng Xiaoxin sat to the side, eating fruit salad and listening to their ear-splitting singing.
After singing until they were exhausted and their throats hurt,
the four of them gathered together to eat and drink, sharing endless secrets and bursting into laughter.
The most carefree youth is nothing more than a few close friends, eating, drinking, and playing around without restraint.
For a brief moment, they forgot their worries and immersed themselves in the joy of the present.
Song Jia, having had a little too much to drink, became a bit sentimental. “Wahhh, Cheng Xiaoxin, if the schedule is set, will you leave as soon as sophomore year starts?”
Cheng Xiaoxin patted Song Jia’s shoulder. “It’s not like I’m never coming back.”
Ling Shuang leaned over and rested her head on Cheng Xiaoxin’s shoulder. “Even though we haven’t known each other for long, when people share the same interests, it feels like we’ve known each other for over a decade, even if it’s only been a day!”
“Really, I come from a remote little town and traveled over mountains and rivers to get to the capital,” Song Jia said, wiping the tears from the corners of her eyes. “I originally thought that someone like me, a country bumpkin, would be lucky just to see the capital’s prosperity. That alone would make the trip worthwhile.”
“Wahhh, I never expected fate to be so kind to me, letting me meet my amazing roommates. How can you all be so wonderful!”
Song Jia threw herself into Xu Zhizhi’s arms, her drunkenness taking over as she started to cry. “Before I started college, I always heard from an older neighbor who studied in the city that relationships in the city are cold and distant. He told me never to give my heart away, or it would be treated like dirt.”
“I admit, I was a bit guarded against you all at first. Wahhhh, I’m sorry, I’m a terrible person. Come on, each of you slap me once.”
Xu Zhizhi was amused and hugged Song Jia, patting her back as she leaned down to comfort her. “No, we all like you.”
Cheng Xiaoxin and Ling Shuang both laughed.
“Jiajia, it’s not like I don’t have holidays,” Cheng Xiaoxin said, leaning closer to comfort Song Jia. “Even though my breaks aren’t long, I’ll fly back to see you all. You all have to take care of yourselves, okay?”
Song Jia was finally comforted. “Okay! You have to bring us snacks. I’m a foodie, all I care about is eating, eating, and eating!”
They sang until they were tired, ate until they were full, and drank until they were satisfied.
Then it was time to leave.
As they stepped out of the private room, it suddenly started to rain.
Zhou Xuci and Gu Sen were already waiting outside, both there to pick up their girlfriends.
The two roommates stared at each other, wide-eyed and silent, maintaining the typical reserve of engineering majors.
“Zhou Xuci,” Gu Sen spoke first.
Zhou Xuci replied, “What?”
“You’re such a dog,” Gu Sen glared at him. “We’re roommates. Why didn’t you tell me you were wearing a white shirt? I just threw on a plaid shirt and ran out!”
I look so stereotypically like a computer science major.
Zhou Xuci paused and gave Gu Sen a once-over. “You didn’t even bother to dress up to see your girlfriend?”
Gu Sen choked back his words, gritting his teeth. “This is me dressed up!”
Plaid shirts are actually quite nice!
They’re stylish!
Zhou Xuci comforted him, “Love is blind. Just be more confident.”
Gu Sen said seriously, “I’m going to buy ten white shirts tonight and wear them every day!”
Zhou Xuci was amused. “How childish.”
“Are you heading back to the lab later?” Gu Sen asked.
“No,” Zhou Xuci replied calmly. “I’m spending time with my girlfriend.”
“Hey, you brat, who doesn’t have a girlfriend?” Gu Sen couldn’t be bothered to argue. “There was an issue with the program algorithm from the other day, I was hoping to get your advice.”
“Bring it back to the dorm. I’ll take a look when I get there,” Zhou Xuci said.
Gu Sen tilted his chin up. “Alright, I’ll treat you to a meal another day.”
Zhou Xuci nodded. “Sure.”
The conversation between these two straight guys was simple, blunt, and straight to the point.
Suddenly, a bell chimed as the door swung open.
Ling Shuang stepped out first. She had drunk quite a bit, but with her high tolerance, she was only slightly tipsy.
The moment she spotted Gu Sen, Ling Shuang rushed over and threw herself into his arms.
“Do my eyes deceive me, or is that Zhou Xuci?” Ling Shuang looked up at Gu Sen and earnestly praised, “He’s so handsome.”
Before Gu Sen could even frown, he was instantly appeased when Ling Shuang giggled and said, “But no one’s better than you. I only like you, hehe.”
Such a sincere confession made Gu Sen, a straightforward guy, blush fiercely.
He was quite the innocent type.
“I-I… I should take her back now,” Gu Sen said, shooting Zhou Xuci a meaningful glance.
Zhou Xuci nodded. “The roads are slippery in the rain. Be careful.”
Seeing this, Cheng Xiaoxin quickly opened an umbrella and dragged the heavily intoxicated Song Jia away.
Only Xu Zhizhi and Zhou Xuci remained.
“Did you drink?” Zhou Xuci asked.
Xu Zhizhi shook her head. “No.”
But then she added, “Though I kind of want to.”
Her heart felt heavy, as if weighed down by a stone.
She needed an outlet.
Zhou Xuci’s eyes held a trace of confusion, but he could sense the turmoil in her mood lately.
She was exhausting herself inwardly.
His girl might seem well-behaved, but deep down, she had a stubborn streak.
A little mule.
Occasionally, she’d get stuck in her own thoughts.
Xu Zhizhi walked up to Zhou Xuci and looked up at him intently. “I only want to get drunk in front of you.”
“Just a couple of sips,” she said, her eyes filled with a desperate sort of courage. “After I drink, I’ll tell you something absurd.”
Only when my mind is hazy will I have the courage to tell you the truth.
“Alright,” Zhou Xuci said, gently patting her head. “I’ll go with you to buy some.”
He opened an umbrella.
Wrapping an arm around Xu Zhizhi, he led her to a convenience store to get alcohol.
He had driven over today after visiting another school.
The car belonged to Lu Huaibei, who lent it to Zhou Xuci for convenience.
After buying the drinks, they got into the car.
Parked by the side of the street, the car was pelted by increasingly heavy rain, the drops merging into thick streams on the windshield.
The watery curtain blurred the entire world, as if a heavy filter had been cast over everything. Xu Zhizhi could no longer make out the scenery outside.
She opened a bottle and began to drink, sip by sip.
Her movements were heavy, laden with unspoken worries.
Zhou Xuci turned on some soft, romantic music, blending with the sound of the pouring rain outside.
Staring out at the downpour, Xu Zhizhi felt her eyes slowly redden, whether from the alcohol or her emotions, she wasn’t sure.
“Zhou Xuci, it feels like I’ve had a very long dream.”
She turned and gazed deeply at him in the driver’s seat, taking in his gentle, affectionate eyes.
“It was about past lives and this one.”
“I remember,” Xu Zhizhi’s hand lifted, gently caressing Zhou Xuci’s face, unable to tear herself away, murmuring softly, “In that world, we met for the first time…”
“It was a downpour just like this.”
