Meanwhile, Tan Yayue sat with another familiar face.
Li Lele obsequiously poured her a drink, smiling. “Yayue, you can’t drink while pregnant. Have some juice instead.”
Tan Yayue raised her glass with a smile. “You didn’t come for nothing today. Later, I’ll take you to see something fun.”
“Great, great!” Li Lele nodded eagerly like a lapdog.
But deep in her eyes lurked intense jealousy.
Watching Tan Yayue drink the juice, Li Lele’s lips curled into a faint, cold smirk.
Before long, Tan Yayue felt dizzy. She pinched her forehead. “Why do I feel so lightheaded?”
Li Lele quickly said, “Oh, you must be exhausted! The banquet hall smells awful. Let me take you downstairs for some fresh air.”
Unsuspecting, Tan Yayue nodded. “Alright, a walk sounds good. I don’t want to stay here anyway.”
A fake engagement banquet, a fake fiancé—it all disgusted her.
Tan Lingyin watched as Li Lele helped Tan Yayue toward the exit. Studying Li Lele’s expression, she frowned.
Quietly, she trailed behind them. Seeing them take the elevator downstairs, she hurried down the adjacent staircase.
The restaurant had a rear garden accessible from the main hall on the first floor, but the clientele here were all wealthy or noble, and few would wander over for leisure.
Tan Lingyin noticed Li Lele leading Tan Yayue into the back garden and quietly hid behind a rockery.
Once Tan Yayue sat down in the pavilion, she unexpectedly dozed off against a stone pillar.
Li Lele sneered and slapped Tan Yayue across the face. “You wretch! Flaunting your status as the Tan family’s young miss, always lording it over me, treating me like a dog!”
“Tan Lingyin used to ignore me, and I didn’t mind that much. But you—not only are you ugly, you reek of poverty. Do you really think you are a superior person just because you return to the Tan family? Today I will ruin your reputation!”
Li Lele took out her phone and made a call. “The pavilion in the back garden—come over now.”
Then she snatched Tan Yayue’s phone, unlocked it using facial recognition, and began tapping away on the screen.
Footsteps approached from a distance, prompting Tan Lingyin to crouch down and hide herself among the flower bushes.
A man in a tailored suit strode briskly toward them. Though dressed respectably, his swaggering gait was unmistakably that of a street thug.
As he entered the pavilion and saw the woman with a swollen belly, he snarled at Li Lele, “The hell? You want me to mess with a pregnant chick? Are you screwing with me?”
Li Lele didn’t flinch. Lowering her voice, she said, “Do you even know who she is? She’s Tan Yayue, the real heiress of the Tan family!”
“You didn’t say she was pregnant! You lied to me!” The man grabbed Li Lele by the throat. “If not her, then you. You’re not bad-looking either.”
Panicking, Li Lele quickly protested, “No, no! If you sleep with her, the Tan family will have no choice but to make you marry her. She’s their only daughter—once that happens, the entire Tan fortune will be yours!”
The man’s hostility faded slightly, and he released her. “Then whose kid is in her belly?”
Li Lele took two steps back. “Who knows? If you say it’s yours, then it’s yours.”
The man studied Tan Yayue for a moment before scoffing. “Fine. Never tried one like this before. Might as well give it a shot.”
Li Lele urged, “Then get started here. I’ll bring people over soon, and she’ll have no choice but to marry you.”
“Fine. Now get lost.” The man waved her off and sat down beside Tan Yayue.
Li Lele hurried away with both phones, completely unaware that Tan Lingyin had witnessed everything.
Once Li Lele was gone, Tan Lingyin turned her attention to the two in the pavilion.
She didn’t intervene.
Tan Yayue had tried to harm her—now she was being set up by Li Lele. She deserved it.
Time passed, and soon Tan Yayue began moaning.
Tan Lingyin silently recited a calming mantra while waiting in the shadows.
After all, Tan Yayue was carrying a ghost fetus, and with it being nighttime, the malevolent spirit
At that moment, a golden talisman flew over and attached itself to Tan Yayue’s body. Instantly, a ghostly shriek rang out as the small black hand retracted back into her belly.
The man scrambled to his feet to flee, but a small stone struck him in the head, sending him face-first onto the ground.
Tan Lingyin emerged from the shadows, grabbed the man’s ankle, and dragged him over to Tan Yayue. She bit her finger and used her blood to redraw a sealing mark on Tan Yayue’s belly, then peeled off the talisman stuck to her body.
She patted Tan Yayue down but couldn’t find the wooden plaque, so she rummaged through the bag that had fallen to the ground—sure enough, the plaque was there. Tan Lingyin tucked it into her own bag and looked down at Tan Yayue and the thug lying on the floor.
Their positions weren’t intimate enough for her liking, so she adjusted Tan Yayue to lie in the man’s arms before leaving, satisfied.
This had nothing to do with her.
“Go, find you.” Huo Jingyan avoided her gaze, coughing lightly behind his hand. “Since you’re back, you should go in and rest.”
He turned away, his back stiff and rigid.
Tan Lingyin noticed his ears, flushed a deep crimson, and instinctively touched her own shoulder where he had just kissed her…
Hiding the shyness in her eyes, she stepped into the private room.
Master Xuanqing immediately asked, “Well? Did the ghost fetus cause any trouble?”
After sitting down, Tan Lingyin replied, “Yes, but I’ve already sealed it. When the time is right, I’ll go to the Tan family to settle this matter.”
Master Xuanqing nodded. “Good. It’s about time we headed home.”
Tan Lingyin, however, was eager to stay for the show. “No rush,” she said. “I still want to watch the fun later.”
