- Chapter 37 - Honey, It's Me!
Tan Yayue suddenly turned and slapped her. “Why do you always have to butt in? Shut up!”
Li Lele was dazed by the slap and burst into tears.
But she didn’t dare vent her anger at Tan Yayue, so she could only sob silently with her head buried in her arms on the desk.
Tan Lingyin sneered and walked over to her seat to sit down.
“Tan Lingyin, don’t get too smug! Just wait—soon enough, you’ll be the one crying!” Tan Yayue glared at her with venomous eyes but suppressed her rage, refusing to give Tan Lingyin any hint.
It seemed Tan Lingyin still didn’t know about the ghost fetus being transferred. She certainly wasn’t going to remind her.
Tan Lingyin flipped through the notes Liu Cheng had given her and suddenly spotted a bank card tucked inside.
Sure enough, someone like Liu Cheng would never just hand over a notebook.
On the back of the card was a note: “There’s 200,000 inside. The password is six 8s. I don’t have much, but I hope you won’t mind.”
Tan Lingyin quietly pocketed the card.
She didn’t mind at all—in fact, she thought Liu Cheng had given too much.
Though he taught at an elite school and was a homeroom teacher, Liu Cheng was genuinely poor.
He was born to toil, supporting both his elderly parents and young children. The daily expenses for his family were no small sum. Being able to fork out 200,000 at once was already his greatest show of sincerity.
……
Time flew by, and soon it was Friday again—exam day.
This time, Tan Lingyin performed just as steadily. When classes resumed on Monday, Liu Cheng announced with a smile, “Congratulations to Tan Lingyin for once again securing first place in the grade for the mock exams!”
Tan Yayue had also taken the mock exams this time but ended up dead last in the grade.
Liu Cheng didn’t scold her or even urge her to study harder.
He could tell Tan Yayue’s heart wasn’t in academics. Besides, as the Tan family’s heiress, she’d live comfortably even without going to college. He couldn’t be bothered to discipline her.
Liu Cheng said, “There are only three days left until the college entrance exams. Spend these three days resting at home, and on exam day, make your own way to the testing center.”
A student asked excitedly, “Are we getting a break?”
Liu Cheng nodded. “Yes. Pack up your things now and go home to focus on your exam prep.”
“Woohoo—”
Cheers erupted instantly in the classroom.
Tan Lingyin gathered her belongings—there wasn’t much left, as she had been taking study materials home bit by bit over the past few days.
As she slung her bag over her shoulder and prepared to leave, she caught sight of Tan Yayue sitting motionless at her desk, lost in thought.
Tan Yayue looked haggard, mechanically packing her things while Li Lele dutifully helped organize her bag beside her.
Tan Lingyin noticed that Tan Yayue had been wearing loose clothes lately—likely because her pregnancy was showing and she could no longer hide it.
By now, the Tan family must have realized the ghost fetus hadn’t been transferred to her. They were probably going crazy with anxiety, right?
A faint smile curled at Tan Lingyin’s lips as she strode cheerfully out of the classroom.
While descending the stairs, she called Huo Jingyan. “School’s out! Tell Han Ge to come pick me up right away!”
Hearing the joy in her voice, Huo Jingyan’s lips also curved into a slight smile. “Alright, I’ll send him over immediately.”
It was just past 10 a.m., and the sunlight outside was perfect.
Huo Jingyan decided to fetch her himself.
He hadn’t stepped out in a while and was starting to feel stifled.
Handing his current tasks over to Li Heng, he left with Zheng Han.
Tan Lingyin sat on the bench by the school gate, waiting. The moment she spotted the familiar license plate, she immediately stood up and waved her hand.
Just then, Tan Yayue and Li Lele emerged.
Tan Yayue walked with an odd gait—her legs weak and unsteady, yet her back was unnaturally straight.
The loose ruffles of her dress fluttered in the wind, faintly revealing the slight swell of her belly.
Though the bulge wasn’t too pronounced, for a girl with such a slender figure, the curve of her stomach was undeniably peculiar.
The window of the Rolls-Royce rolled down, and Huo Jingyan crooked a finger in Tan Lingyin’s direction. “Get in.”
The moment Tan Yayue saw that handsome face she had longed for day and night, she broke into a sprint, rushing to the car door.
“You’ve finally come to see me!” Tan Yayue’s excited face flushed pink as she gazed at Huo Jingyan with undisguised longing.
Huo Jingyan’s eyes darkened slightly as he replied coldly, “Move.”
Zheng Han hurried over, blocking the car window with his arm. “Miss, my boss isn’t familiar with you. Please step aside.”
Ignoring him, Tan Yayue pressed on, “Husband, it’s me! Don’t you remember what happened between us in the dream?”
Huo Jingyan’s brows furrowed. “She’s insane. Get her out of here.”
Zheng Han reached out to push Tan Yayue’s shoulder, and she deliberately stumbled backward. “Ah—husband, he pushed me!”
But the expected fall never came—she was caught in someone’s arms instead.
Tan Lingyin smiled as she steadied Tan Yayue by the waist, pulling her aside and firmly planting her back on her feet. “Tan Yayue, how old are you to be pulling stunts like this? Stand properly—I won’t catch you a second time.”
Li Lele rushed over as well, supporting Tan Yayue. “Tan Lingyin, you’re bullying Yayue again!”
Tan Lingyin spread her hands in confusion. “I was the one who helped her up. You can’t even flatter someone properly—I don’t have time for you.”
Zheng Han had already opened the car door. “Miss Tan, please get in.”
The moment Tan Lingyin took her seat, Tan Yayue lunged forward again. “Husband, it’s me! How could you forget me? I’m carrying your—”
The window rolled up at Huo Jingyan’s command, cutting off the noise outside.
He turned to Tan Lingyin, his voice low and firm. “I don’t know her.”
Tan Lingyin nodded. “I know.”
Huo Jingyan pressed his lips together, unsure why he had felt the need to explain himself.
Outside the car, Tan Yayue didn’t continue shouting—she had no intention of letting everyone know about the ghostly pregnancy she was carrying.
Seeing her quiet down, Zheng Han quickly took the driver’s seat and stepped on the gas, eager to leave before she could cause more trouble.
Li Lele tugged at Tan Yayue’s sleeve. “Yayue, do you know that man? He’s so handsome!”
Tan Yayue shot her a dark look. “He’s mine. Don’t even think about him!”
“Of course, of course,” Li Lele nodded repeatedly.
Ugh!
Yours? Please—he’s clearly Tan Lingyin’s!
Does she think I’m blind or stupid?
If Tan Yayue wasn’t still somewhat useful, Li Lele wouldn’t bother sucking up to her at all.
With that in mind, Li Lele fawned, “Yayue, after the college entrance exams, your dad will definitely throw a party to celebrate your graduation, right? Can you invite me?”
Tan Yayue basked in the flattery and lazily replied, “Sure. I’ll let you know when the time comes.”
Li Lele nodded with a smile—this was a rare opportunity. As long as she seized it, she would never have to fawn over Tan Yayue again!
Meanwhile, Tan Yayue was lost in thought. Perhaps… she could find another way to get close to that man…
