- Chapter 28 - What Kind of Mystic Are You?
Master Xuanqing checked the time and grabbed his arm. “In such a hurry?”
“Let’s wait a little longer. Tan Lingyin should be finishing her exams soon!”
Huo Jingyan thought it over and nodded. “Li Heng, ask Zheng Han if he’s picked her up yet.”
Li Heng immediately called Zheng Han. “Hey, Zheng, has Miss Tan left school yet?”
Zheng Han glanced at the time. “Normally, she’d be out by now, but today’s exam day.”
“I asked a passing teacher earlier. Since they’re testing six subjects, it’ll be another two hours.”
Li Heng hung up and frowned. “Six subjects—two more hours before she’s done.”
Master Xuanqing said, “Then we wait!”
Li Heng’s phone rang again. He looked at Huo Jingyan. “Boss Huo, it’s the partner.”
Huo Jingyan reached out. “I’ll take it.”
The call connected, and the person on the other end sounded frantic. “Assistant Li, how are we handling this?”
“If we don’t resolve it soon, we can’t afford the delays!”
“All manpower and resources are stalled here. And if something really goes wrong, lives are at stake!”
Huo Jingyan replied calmly, “Wait two more hours. I’ll be there.”
“Is that Boss Huo?” The voice sounded surprised before continuing urgently, “Boss Huo! We trusted you to lead this. Workers are already fainting—we’re terrified!”
“Two hours? I don’t even dare stay here, but someone has to guard the site. What do we do…?”
In the background, chaotic shouts erupted.
“Another one collapsed!”
“Why’s he convulsing?!”
The man on the phone exclaimed, “Boss Huo! Another worker just passed out! What do we do? What now?”
“This place is seriously cursed…”
Suddenly, another man’s voice cut in, stern and grave. “The owner must personally apologize to appease what’s in that coffin!”
“If you don’t come, no one here will escape!”
Huo Jingyan’s brow furrowed. “I’m on my way.”
He handed the phone back to Li Heng. “I’ll change and leave immediately.”
Master Xuanqing asked, “Why must you be the one to go?”
“They say only I can apologize to whatever’s in that coffin to calm it down.” Huo Jingyan strode off.
Master Xuanqing turned to Li Heng. “Did anyone take pictures of the coffin?”
Li Heng shook his head. “No… People started fainting the moment it was unearthed. Who’d dare take photos…?”
Master Xuanqing stroked his beard and cast a divination for the journey.
His expression darkened instantly. “Bad omen… very bad…”
Li Heng tensed. “What’s bad? Tell us!”
“Heaven’s secrets cannot be revealed.” What he foresaw had not yet happened—he couldn’t speak of it.
Soon, Huo Jingyan and the others set off.
Master Xuanqing reminded them, “Tell Tan Lingyin about the coffin.”
Huo Jingyan sent Tan Lingyin a message: A coffin was unearthed at the company’s South City property. Someone said I must personally apologize to whatever’s inside. Just left—will update you when I arrive.
The estate was in eastern South City, while the site was in the west—nearly an hour’s drive away.
An hour later, Huo Jingyan sent Tan Lingyin a message saying “arrived” before getting out of the car with Master Xuanqing.
It was almost dark, and the streetlights had already flickered on.
The construction site was surrounded by blue metal sheets, and faint, chaotic voices could be heard from inside.
Walking beside Huo Jingyan, Master Xuanqing lowered his voice and reminded him, “No matter what happens, don’t stray too far from me.”
Huo Jingyan nodded. He had sensed Xuan Qing’s seriousness in the car—likely because he had foreseen something.
The two walked ahead, followed by Li Heng and twenty bodyguards.
Every bodyguard from the estate had been mobilized, and they were all armed with guns.
Coming to a place like this, they had to bring enough manpower.
Once inside, they saw all the workers huddled near the blue metal sheets, whispering among themselves as the group entered.
A large lamp hung over a clearing in the distance, illuminating a man in a yellow Daoist robe standing beneath it.
He held a horsetail whisk in his hand, and beside him lay a coffin.
The coffin was smeared with reddish-brown dirt, clearly freshly unearthed.
“President Huo! Is that President Huo?” someone shouted while running over.
A middle-aged man, drenched in sweat, hurried forward and bowed respectfully. “President Huo!”
He then bowed to Master Xuanqing.
Li Heng quickly corrected, “This is President Huo.”
Then, turning to Huo Jingyan, he said, “President Huo, this is one of our partners, Feng Youcai.”
Feng Youcai hastily bowed to Huo Jingyan. “President Huo! I didn’t realize you were so young!”
Huo Jingyan gave a slight nod before glancing toward the coffin. “Is that the mystic over there?”
“Yes! He showed up not long after we dug up the coffin, saying he sensed overwhelming baleful energy here!” Feng Youcai said nervously.
Master Xuanqing spoke up, “Wait here. I’ll go take a look.”
He strode over, his eyes fixed on the coffin on the ground.
The mystic also turned his head, watching as Master Xuanqing circled the coffin, fingers moving as if performing calculations. Suspicious, he asked, “Are you a mystic?”
Master Xuanqing frowned. “You don’t recognize me?”
It was one thing for ordinary people not to know him, but for a fellow mystic to be unaware was strange.
Unless this man lived deep in the mountains, cut off from the internet and news.
When he had assisted the national archaeological team in examining ancient tombs, he had even taken a photo with them!
That photo had circulated widely among mystics.
The man flicked his horsetail whisk dismissively. “Why should I know you?”
Master Xuanqing studied him closely, his fingers subtly calculating the man’s fortune through his appearance.
Coldly, he declared, “You’re not a mystic!”
The man faltered for a moment before puffing out his chest. “Who the hell are you? If I’m not a mystic, then you are?”
“As a matter of fact, I am!” Master Xuanqing scoffed, then glanced at the coffin. “If you’re not from the mystic arts, why insist that President Huo come here to apologize?”
“You’re a mystic? Then I’m the founding ancestor of mystic arts!” The yellow-robed man laughed loudly, swinging his whisk left and right.
“Outrageous!” Master Xuanqing’s anger flared. “How dare you insult the founding ancestor of mystic arts? You’re asking for a beating!”
He flung out a talisman, his hands swiftly forming seals as he muttered an incantation under his breath.
The talisman stuck to the yellow-robed man, freezing him in place instantly.
“Y-you! What did you do?!”
Master Xuanqing snapped, “If you don’t even recognize a Binding Talisman, what kind of mystic are you?”
Turning to Li Heng, he ordered, “Li Heng, arrest this fraud!”
Two bodyguards quickly approached, holding hemp ropes they had just found nearby.
Only after being tied up did the man finally show fear.
“Spare me! Master, spare me! I was just doing a job for money to get by!”
