- Chapter 10 - The Scent of Talismans on You
Tan Lingyin smiled faintly and said, “This is a Divine Light Talisman. If its light touches you, you’ll feel as though you’re being burned by raging flames.”
“The only reason I’m not resorting to force is that I believe you can still be saved.”
The ghostly shadow’s hoarse voice rang out angrily, “You call this not resorting to force?! The malevolent energy I’ve accumulated is almost completely burned away!”
The grating sound, like a rusty saw scraping against wood, pierced the eardrums of Huo Jingyan and the others, causing them immense pain.
Master Xuanqing had already sealed his own hearing earlier and quickly reached out to press an acupoint behind Huo Jingyan’s ear. “I’ve temporarily blocked your hearing. Ghostly wails aren’t something ordinary people can endure.”
Zhao Deming and his wife clutched their ears, their faces twisted in agony.
Master Xuanqing swiftly sealed the acupoints behind their ears as well.
As for Tan Lingyin, she remained completely unaffected.
She spoke coolly, “I’m trying to save you, which is why I’m kindly cleansing the malevolent energy from your body. If you keep wailing ungratefully, I’ll destroy you outright!”
The ghostly shadow fell silent for a moment before speaking again, its voice much quieter now. “You’re a mystic practitioner… Do you truly intend to save me?”
Tan Lingyin gave a slight nod and then pulled out another talisman. “This is a Soul-Destroying Talisman. If I didn’t want to save you, I would have used it on you from the start.”
“Right now, I’m helping you purge the malevolent energy. Stay calm and don’t harm others with your ghostly cries—your own son is among them.”
The ghostly shadow seemed to have fully calmed down and no longer made a sound.
Holding the Divine Light Talisman, Tan Lingyin stepped closer to it.
Unable to hear the conversation between the girl and the ghost, Master Xuanqing called out nervously, “Don’t get too close to her!”
But Tan Lingyin didn’t even glance back as she walked forward.
The Divine Light Talisman was even more effective at close range, and the malevolent energy around the ghostly shadow burned away rapidly.
Suppressing its cries, the ghost endured the agony of having its malevolent energy purified.
Tan Lingyin spoke softly in reassurance, “Endure this brief suffering, and you’ll be reborn into a better life.”
As the malevolent energy dissipated, the ghost’s form gradually became clearer.
A woman’s delicate features slowly emerged from the dark mist.
Tan Lingyin turned to Master Xuanqing, pointed to her ear, and then made a gesture with her fingers splayed open.
Master Xuanqing immediately understood and hurriedly unsealed everyone’s acupoints.
Just as he was about to step forward, the ghostly shadow’s voice stopped him. “He can’t come any closer!”
Tan Lingyin waved at Master Xuanqing. “Master Xuanqing, she only trusts me right now. Please wait outside for now.”
Then she turned to Zhao Deming and his wife. “Actually, the two of you can come in.”
The ghostly shadow’s delicate face showed concern. “If they get too close, they might get hurt…”
Tan Lingyin chuckled lightly. “You’ve filled this place with ghostly energy. They’ve been living here day and night—you’ve already harmed them without realizing it.”
Hearing this, the ghostly shadow lowered its head in silence, its pale face now etched with guilt and remorse.
Tan Lingyin took out a blank talisman from her bag, then bit her fingertip and used her blood to draw a spiritual symbol.
Muttering an incantation under her breath, she sent the talisman floating toward the ghostly shadow.
“Don’t be afraid. This is a Manifestation Talisman. Your son should at least get to see you once.” Seeing the ghostly shadow about to flee, Tan Lingyin quickly reassured it.
As the manifestation talisman floated above the ghostly figure, Tan Lingyin gathered her mystical energy in both hands and channeled it into the talisman. The talisman emitted a golden light and settled onto the ghost’s form.
The ghost was dressed in a white suit skirt, her chest stained with a large patch of blood, the skirt dyed a deep crimson.
Her face was deathly pale, devoid of any color, with traces of blood even at the corners of her lips.
The shocking sight sent Zhao Deming and his wife stumbling backward in fear.
Master Xuanqing was utterly astonished. “Solidified Mystical Energy! How does this girl possess such profound mastery of the arcane arts…?”
He had studied mystical techniques since childhood, practicing diligently from dawn till dusk, yet it wasn’t until he was forty that he first achieved the state of solidified mystical energy—during a desperate battle against a malevolent spirit.
But this young girl before him had mastered it at such a tender age, dealing a heavy blow to his pride.
Huo Jingyan, observing the slender and tall figure of the girl, lightly patted Master Xuanqing on the shoulder. “Don’t forget who her master is.”
Master Xuanqing quickly tried to console himself. “Right, her master was the one who resolved her life-threatening calamity. So this makes sense, it makes sense…”
Makes sense, my foot!!!
Tan Lingyin beckoned to the two behind her. “Come closer.”
Zhao Deming cautiously pulled his wife forward, hiding behind Tan Lingyin as he asked, “Young Master, what’s happening now?”
Tan Lingyin commanded coolly, “Kneel and kowtow to your mother.”
Zhao Deming looked at the ghostly figure before him. The face was unfamiliar, yet it stirred something deep within him.
“Is this really my birth mother?” he murmured hesitantly.
Tan Lingyin nodded. “Yes.”
Zhao Deming scrutinized the ghost’s features, growing increasingly shocked—the resemblance in the brows and eyes was uncanny.
His wife gripped his hand tightly and whispered, “Look at her neck—there’s a mole, in the exact same spot as yours!”
Zhao Deming immediately looked, then reached up to touch his own neck.
In the same position, the ghost bore an identical black mole.
“Mom!” Zhao Deming’s voice trembled as his legs gave way, dropping him to his knees. “Mom—”
His voice choked with sobs as he cried out, “I’ve called another woman mother for over forty years! Why did it take you so long to come see me?”
The ghost’s voice was thick with emotion. “I wanted to come sooner, but I was pinned beneath, unable to break free…”
Tan Lingyin interjected, “You were able to emerge because of the heavy rain in Nancheng this year, wasn’t it? The downpour washed away the sealing talismans by your grave.”
The ghost nodded fervently. “How did you know that, Noble One?”
“Of course, I divined it,” Tan Lingyin replied with a faint smile. “Your aura carries traces of sealing talismans—strong ones at that.”
“You must have seen the faces of those who killed you before you died. That’s why they feared your vengeance and sealed you beneath the earth.”
A sinister expression flickered across the ghost’s face as she hissed coldly, “Yes, I saw them!”
Tan Lingyin frowned and snapped, “Retract your vengeful guise.”
The ghost’s expression instantly shifted back to one of pale remorse.
“What’s your name?” Tan Lingyin suddenly asked.
The ghost answered obediently, “Chen Qing.”
Tan Lingyin turned to look at Master Xuanqing and said, “Master Xuanqing, I will now recount how this female ghost died. You can take your time to verify if what I say is correct.”
Master Xuanqing at the doorway immediately began calculating based on the ghostly figure’s appearance.
Tan Lingyin gazed at the female ghost and spoke slowly, “Before you died, you discovered your husband’s secret…”
