Stop Eyeing My Pretty Caretaker - Chapter 24
Chapter 24
Jian Chen did not know how many times he had woken up in this large bed.
Whenever his body felt this exhausted, Jian Chen knew he had likely only slept for three hours again.
But this time, Jian Chen felt he might have only slept for one hour.
Morning light poured into a corner of the bedroom through the curtains. Jian Chen opened his eyes, sleepy-eyed, his eyelids feeling heavy as lead.
This was the third year since he and Yesting had married.
There were some things he had adapted to, and some things… he still couldn’t adapt to.
Jian Chen managed to roll over, letting out a faint nasal sound the voice was sticky and soft, like a kitten acting spoiled.
He lifted his fingers; okay, he could move them.
He wiggled his calves; hmm a little cramping.
Yesting was tightening his tie when he heard Jian Chen’s sound.
The man leaned over. He seemed to be half-kneeling or half-squatting by the bed Jian Chen wasn’t sure but Yesting seemed to be looking at his sleeping face, hesitant to speak.
Jian Chen’s eyelashes fluttered; he couldn’t hold it anymore and asked in a small voice, “What’s wrong?“
Yesting said, “I’m heading out.“
Jian Chen was dazed: “Mm okay.“
Then, Jian Chen felt vaguely that the man hadn’t left and was still holding that posture.
Jian Chen couldn’t help but open his eyes again: “What is it? Mm“
Yesting kissed him.
Jian Chen was forced to roll back over until he was a bit out of breath, and only then did the man let him go.
Jian Chen felt his face heating up bit by bit. The memories of last night flooded back. He rolled over like a salted fish, burying his face in the pillow, trying to suffocate himself.
In a trance, he heard the man let out a sound of laughter, barely audible.
This damn ambiguous atmosphere.
Jian Chen thought, it’s been three years, how are they still like they were when they first got married?
Yesting’s voice was low as he said slowly, “I’m going on a business trip, won’t be back for two months.“
Jian Chen nodded: “I know.“
Of course he knew.
Otherwise, Yesting wouldn’t have changed his usual behavior last night, stopping him from falling asleep time and time again while whispering a reminder that it would be two months before he returned.
Jian Chen reflected that he shouldn’t have been soft-hearted; it was just that when the man rubbed his neck, it gave him the illusion that the other was… acting spoiled.
Now that he thought about it, there was no such thing as a beast acting spoiled and him agreeing to let the other devour him whole without even bones left!
Although he was complaining in his heart, Jian Chen still whispered a reminder: “Stay safe, Dunden and I will be waiting for your return.“
Yesting didn’t speak.
Until the air had been quiet for a long time and Jian Chen thought the man had already left, he suddenly felt himself, blanket and all, being picked up.
Jian Chen: “!!!“
The feeling of suspension was so sudden that Jian Chen snapped out of his sleepiness. Yesting held him without a word and walked straight out of the bedroom.
Jian Chen: “???“
He was at a loss: “Yesting?“
The man held him firmly, walking down the stairs from the second floor. The little robot appeared in response, its head flashing with lights, saying good morning to Jian Chen and Yesting.
Jian Chen told himself that Bennett was just a small robot, emotionless, no need to be embarrassed or shy, so he said, “Good morning, Bennett.“
His eyes fell on the robot’s neck a red scarf, a bit pilled, but neatly wrapped around and around, tied in a knot at the bottom.
It was the one he had given the little robot on Christmas three years ago.
Jian Chen couldn’t help but say, “Bennett, throw that scarf away. If you like, I’ll go buy you a new one.“
The little robot shook its head, lifted its mechanical hand to cover the scarf, its voice glitching: “No, no need, Mr. Jian. This one is very good, it is mine, it is perfectly fine.“
It was the first time Jian Chen had seen the little robot incoherent, even a bit flustered, so he nodded, wondering if it had been too long and the little robot was malfunctioning.
Should he take Bennett for maintenance in the next few days?
As he was thinking, he suddenly felt the environment around him was not quite right.
They clearly hadn’t left the villa, yet the surroundings were unfamiliar. Jian Chen realized the man seemed to have brought him to the basement.
The villa actually had a basement?!
Yesting’s voice was deep in his ear: “Behind the vase, there is a hidden compartment. Push the hidden compartment, and there is a switch on the right side.“
It was like he was giving him instructions. Jian Chen understood; this was the way to enter the basement. Despite his surprise, he listened silently and memorized it.
“If a comet hits the earth and I am not by your side, return here and enter the basement.“
Jian Chen froze, his surprise deepening: “Is this basement so powerful that it can withstand high-impact collisions and radiation?“
Yesting: “No.“
Jian Chen: “…“
The blanket slowly slipped off the edge of his clothes, and Yesting stopped. In the middle of the plain-looking basement stood a square capsule.
It was astonishing.
The entire body of the capsule was silver-white with blue edges, the material indistinguishable, but Jian Chen had an intuition that this square capsule was different from anything he had seen on the market.
Yesting set Jian Chen down.
“This is a sleep capsule.“
He took Jian Chen’s hand, rubbing it, and then held the young man’s index finger, pressing it against the body of the capsule.
The hatch opened with a muffled sound, but the response was quick after being touched, showing its excellent performance.
“Your fingerprint can open it.” Yesting closed the hatch again, pressed his own hand to the door, and the capsule opened again: “Mine can too.“
Yesting said, “Only us.“
Jian Chen’s eyes widened, his lips moved, but for a moment he couldn’t speak.
Yesting pondered for a moment before adding, “The basement cannot withstand a disaster, but the sleep capsule can.“
“Then what about you?” Jian Chen asked. “What will you do?“
“I won’t die.” Yesting looked at Jian Chen. “I will find you and rescue you.“
A comet hitting the earth, both of them being ordinary humans facing an extinction-level event how could Yesting be so sure he wouldn’t die?
But at the same time, his heart couldn’t help but believe that Yesting would really do what he said, no matter what happened.
Jian Chen thought he had gone crazy.
Yesting reached his hand into the sleep capsule.
Only then did Jian Chen notice that there was a flowing liquid inside—transparent, unlike ordinary water, it looked like a semi-fluid, viscous, clear, and possessed a fluidity that science could not explain.
It didn’t look like a liquid from Earth at all.
The man’s voice sounded in his ear: “Don’t get hurt, don’t bleed.“
Jian Chen: “?“
Yesting said, “The liquid in here will absorb blood, slowly draining your body through the wound.“
“Once you enter and close the hatch, it will never open again.” Yesting pulled his hand back, and the liquid rolled off his hand and vanished as if it had never existed.
Jian Chen nodded, signaling that he understood and knew.
The man said, “Jian Chen, I have to go.“
This time, it felt like a real farewell.
Jian Chen suddenly felt a bit reluctant.
After all, Yesting had given so many instructions before leaving, as if they wouldn’t be able to meet for a very, very long time.
Jian Chen: “I’ll wait for you to come back.“
The place Yesting was going for his business trip was not a city, nor a foreign military district, but in the air.
In the year 3771, the second year of Jian Chen and Yesting’s marriage, Earth suffered an alien invasion.
The military sectors combined, selected and gathered super-soldiers, led by officers, and established an aerial floating base above the cities.
It was equivalent to cutting off the alien invasion, shielding the Earth’s surface beneath them.
The battle had been going on for a year.
Yesting had been on a business trip for three months last time, and this time he had only been back for a week before he had to leave again.
One month later.
Deputy Executive Yu knocked and entered, saying, “Report.“
Inside the conference hall, neatly dressed in military uniforms, the entire staff gathered around the conference table, grave and solemn.
Yesting raised his eyes, signaling Deputy Yu to continue.
Deputy Yu’s expression was heavy. He pondered for a moment and began to report: “General, regarding the comet incident, according to precise observations by the Academy of Sciences, the impact on Earth is six to fourteen days away.“
“The first to arrive will be the smallest comet fragment, with a diameter of 67 meters.“
“More comet fragments will arrive thereafter.“
Deputy Yu said slowly, “Based on all previous meeting contents, I have summarized them. There are currently three plans.“
“First, the Earth immigration plan.“
Deputy Yu frowned slightly: “But apart from Tar Star, no planet suitable for habitation has been found. We have negotiated multiple times with Jian Yu, the leader of Tar Star, but after three interstellar wars, no agreement was reached.“
“Therefore, we launched the spaceship emergency evacuation plan, planning a total of three transport missions. The 72,300 citizens in the first transport were attacked by aliens two months ago, and all passengers… have perished.“
Deputy Yu’s voice trembled slightly as he finished: “So, the second spaceship transport plan has been forced to pause.“
The conference hall was terrifyingly silent. An officer slowly covered his face, silently breaking down.
His mother had died on that spaceship.
Deputy Yu turned to the second page. “Second, overcome the alien invasion. According to intelligence scouts, the enemy’s main mothership can accommodate 120,000 people, and there are 76 auxiliary ships, which could secure the departure of a fairly large number of citizens from Earth.“
“Of course, with the war ongoing, we cannot guarantee that we can destroy all the alien invaders within six days.“
The conference hall fell into a silence unprecedented.
Everyone knew that the last hope for Earth had reached its end.
Deputy Yu turned to the third page: “The final piece of intelligence, which is the Earth Core.“
This was a brand new term that caught the attention of the officers present.
Deputy Yu seemed to feel that the information he was about to deliver was absurd, so he cleared his throat and said: “Located in the Endemic Animal Research Institute in the center of China, geologists have confirmed that beneath the institute exists an unknown power named the ‘Earth Core,‘ similar to a magnetic field.“
“The animals living in the research institute, according to the data reported by the professors—of course, excluding the human animals their age cycles seem to have extended.“
“For example, the Black Dragon, Rejia, which the military has been monitoring. According to the normal growth cycle of a dragon, three years ago, Rejia was still a cub, but now…“
Deputy Yu said, baffled: “It is still a cub.“
Everyone: “?“
“There are many cases of the same situation. Not to mention adult animals, this is especially obvious in the cubs.“
“Of course, this phenomenon is a result of recent reports and still requires further verification.“
“This also provides us with hope. If we can utilize the energy of the Earth Core and make it effective on humans, even if we migrate to a planet not suitable for life, we could increase our lifespan and resist radiation, climate, and various other factors.“
Deputy Yu closed the materials and said slowly: “So, everyone, no matter which plan is executed, the most urgent priority is to defeat the enemy.“
“We are not only fighting for hope for our respective families, but also fighting for time for the Earth.“
Deputy Yu took a deep breath and said: “We cannot fall until the very last moment.“
Six days later.
An officer ran into the main hall, stumbling, his gait somewhat unsteady.
The person he bumped into couldn’t help but curse: “Watch where you’re going! What’s the rush?“
The young officer didn’t pay attention, instead anxiously hitting the elevator button, quickly reaching the tenth floor.
Without bothering to knock, he pushed open the door to the conference room and shouted urgently: “Report!“
“The first comet has arrived at Earth!“
Yesting raised his gaze: “Is the impact point the predicted location?“
“Yes!” the officer said, sweating. “Just as we expected, the 3.1-kilometer radius has been successfully evacuated.“
“It is within the plan.” Deputy Yu frowned and asked, “What is the matter with you? Why are you so panicked?“
The officer trembled, saying: “At 40,000 meters above the Earth, the Academy of Sciences observed that a comet fragment has detached from the comet and split into even smaller fragments, heading toward other coordinate directions!“
“If the hypothesis is correct…“
The officer gritted his teeth and finished, trembling:
“It is about to strike the city where our headquarters is located!“
