Chapter 43: “Jiejie, Love Me”
“Xiaozhu left…”
“I was the one who forced her away…”
“She left me…”
“I’m in so much pain, do you understand?”
Xie Ning looked at Xiaoyu, who was sitting blankly under the eaves, and shook her head: “No.”
“After all, Xiaozhu is right next door, training with Liu Yena. If you climb the wall now, you might even see Xiaozhu practicing her sword techniques in the yard.”
Xiaoyu sighed: “It seems you really don’t understand.”
“Xiaozhu has already set her mind on leaving this place. If not for Her Highness, she would probably be outside Zhenxue City by now.”
“Even though she’s physically here, her heart has long gone from me.”
Xie Ning quietly corrected: “Her heart never seemed to have been close to you.”
Xiaoyu froze, clutching her chest, feeling even more distressed.
“The one above once gave an answer. She told me that no matter where the heart is, as long as the body is hers, that’s enough. Do you want to learn from that?”
Xiaoyu gave her a strange look: “You and Xiaozhu are somewhat different. Doing that would only push Xiaozhu further away, whereas you are more… well, unique.”
“You enjoy it.”
Xie Ning: “…”
“You’re right. Why am I even talking to you? I can’t get through to you. I’d be better off taking a pot of water to Xiaozhu.”
The unique Xie Ning returned to the bedroom.
She saw Pei Shujing curled up on the couch.
She was sound asleep. Her fair, delicate face lacked its usual nobility and arrogance, instead appearing gentle.
“Your Highness.”
Xie Ning nudged her shoulder.
Pei Shujing slowly opened her eyes. She seemed dazed for a moment, as if her consciousness hadn’t fully awakened, then lazily stretched out her hand.
Xie Ning held her hand and pulled her up.
Pei Shujing leaned into her arms, wrapped her arms around Xie Ning’s neck with practiced ease, and commanded in a sleepy voice:
“Put on my shoes.”
Unexpectedly, Xie Ning did not immediately pick up her feet. Instead, she asked a soul-searching question.
“Your Highness, do you think I’m unique?”
Pei Shujing paused, pretending to contemplate.
“Quite unique.”
Pei Shujing yawned lazily: “Why do you ask? Who said that about you?”
“It was Xiaoyu!”
Xie Ning accused mournfully: “She said you abuse me, and yet I enjoy it.”
Pei Shujing narrowed her eyes: “Don’t you?”
“…I mean, Her Highness would never abuse me! That sly thing, stirring up trouble all day. She deserves a lesson!”
Pei Shujing chuckled: “Yes, this Prince would never abuse you. In someone’s mind, that’s a reward.”
“…I think I need to salvage my image in your eyes.”
“And?”
“So, Your Highness, which pair of shoes are you wearing today?”
Pei Shujing turned her cold face away in utter disdain, lay back down, and lifted her right foot, offering it to Xie Ning.
While putting on the shoe, Xie Ning spoke as if talking to herself.
“Sigh, Valentine’s Day is in a couple of days.”
“Oh right, they don’t have foreign holidays here.”
“But that day is my birthday, you know…”
After waiting for a long time, she saw no reaction from the person beside her. Xie Ning turned her head and saw that the woman had fallen asleep again.
Pei Shujing suddenly burst into laughter: “Alright, alright, I know it’s your birthday.”
Xie Ning couldn’t help but smile. Just as she thought, Pei Shujing was excellent to her. How could she abuse her?!
“So, what gift do you plan to give me for your birthday?”
Don’t misunderstand, this wasn’t Xie Ning asking, but Pei Shujing.
Xie Ning was dumbfounded.
“Your Highness, it’s my birthday. Why should I give you a gift?”
Pei Shujing said matter-of-factly: “It’s your birthday, so this Prince naturally needs to celebrate as well. That is your honor.”
“But if someone else were to give a gift to this Prince, do you think I would accept it?”
“Therefore, this gift can only come from you. Any more questions?”
“…No.” Xie Ning shut her mouth.
This wasn’t just no problems; this was absolutely zero problems!
“Where to next?” Xie Ning asked quietly.
“First, we go shopping,” Pei Shujing said with her eyes closed.
“Shopping?”
“Mhm.”
After putting on her shoes and helping her sit up again, Pei Shujing was finally truly awake.
“What are we buying?” Xie Ning asked.
Pei Shujing explained with an impatient look.
“My mother wrote saying she wants me to send her some specialties from the Northern Borders. I’m going to shop in the city.”
“Oh.”
“Also, if I don’t give someone a gift on their birthday, they might resent me again.”
Xie Ning beamed smugly: “Someone wouldn’t.”
“In that case, I won’t send one.”
Pei Shujing smacked her crossly: “Such a lack of ambition.”
The two walked out of the Prince Xia’s Residence, surrounded by dozens of hidden guards openly and secretly.
The city was bustling with people. After the New Year, a more genuine smile appeared on the faces of the common folk.
Xie Ning couldn’t help but sigh. While she and Pei Shujing seemed to bicker all day long, that was only during Pei Shujing’s limited free time.
In reality, Pei Shujing spent at least six or seven hours out of every twelve handling state affairs.
The result was clear. One could tell from the faces of the people that Pei Shujing’s efforts were not in vain.
“Your Highness, you will definitely be a great Emperor in the future.”
Pei Shujing snorted noncommittally.
“And you? Where will you be then?”
Hearing Pei Shujing’s question, Xie Ning laughed it off evasively.
But Pei Shujing’s expression immediately turned icy.
“Has this Prince not been good enough to you lately? Have you still not settled down?”
Xie Ning remained silent.
Pei Shujing shot her a fierce look, withdrew her arm from Xie Ning’s, and pointed in a different direction.
“Get lost.”
Without waiting for Xie Ning’s reaction, she flicked her sleeve and left.
Xie Ning stood there, sighed, and then chased after her.
Pei Shujing held her arms, her face cold: “Did this Prince tell you to get lost or not? Can’t you hear me?”
Xie Ning didn’t speak, just followed her quietly.
After Pei Shujing finished buying the items to be sent to the capital and was ready to head back to the residence, the two still hadn’t exchanged a single word.
There was no one in the backyard of the residence.
Xiaozhu was training next door, and presumably, Xiaoyu was accompanying her.
So, after Xie Ning changed back into women’s clothing and saw Pei Shujing sitting in the courtyard, she hugged her without hesitation.
Pei Shujing pushed her away in annoyance, but couldn’t succeed. Her lips curled into a chilling smile.
“You made this Prince very angry today.”
Xie Ning smiled, reaching out to pull Pei Shujing into her arms: “Then how does Your Highness plan to punish me?”
“Do you only know this one trick to make this Prince happy? Or do you think your body is highly attractive to this Prince?”
Pei Shujing scoffed.
“Xie Ning, you overestimate yourself. This Prince says it again: don’t assume my fondness for you means I will tolerate you forever.”
Xie Ning looked at her seriously: “Your Highness, I just haven’t figured it out yet. Please give me some time, okay?”
The two looked at each other for a moment, and in the end, Pei Shujing compromised.
“Fine, this Prince will give you one more chance. I won’t ask this question again until I sit on that throne. At that time, I will see clearly what choice you make.”
Xie Ning felt a deep emotional pull. Her hands slowly moved lower.
“If the outcome is unsatisfactory, will Your Highness kill me?”
Pei Shujing tightened the hands wrapped around Xie Ning’s neck. Their bodies pressed closely together.
She smiled down at Xie Ning.
“Guess?”
“Threatening me like this, aren’t you afraid I’ll run?”
Xie Ning tilted her face up, Pei Shujing looked down, and their foreheads touched.
“If you dare to run, the wheelchair I used initially will be the best birthday gift for you.”
As her lips slightly parted, a warm, moist breath exhaled from her mouth.
“Your Highness, you didn’t buy me a gift today.”
“You angered this Prince, and you still want a gift?”
Xie Ning also slightly parted her lips.
The two exchanged the warmth from each other’s mouths.
“Stick out your tongue,” Pei Shujing commanded.
Xie Ning stuck out her tongue. She gently touched it with the tip of her own tongue.
Just as Xie Ning was about to pursue, she immediately pulled away, staring at her without saying a word.
Xie Ning had no choice but to stick out her tongue for the third time.
Pei Shujing repeated her previous action.
After the long kiss ended, a quarter of an hour later.
Xie Ning was breathing heavily. A fire seemed to be raging inside her body.
She buried her face into Pei Shujing’s chest, seeking softness.
Pei Shujing pressed her finger between Xie Ning’s eyebrows, preventing her from succeeding: “That’s enough.”
“Your Highness, love me,” Xie Ning pleaded, clutching her waist tightly, as if to break her.
Pei Shujing’s finger slid down her nose, finally stopping at the tip.
“Call me Jiejie.”
“Jiejie, love me, okay?”
Pei Shujing turned her head away in disdain: “Is this all the ambition you have?”
Xie Ning said with self-assurance: “I’m twenty-five this year. I’m naturally younger than Your Highness. What’s wrong with calling you Jiejie?”
Pei Shujing’s heart stirred. She remembered that the investigation showed Xie Ning’s age was the same as hers, twenty-seven. Why did Xie Ning say she was only twenty-five?
However, she didn’t dwell on it. She suspected it might be related to Xie Ning’s greatest secret.
So there was no need to investigate now. One day, she would make Xie Ning willingly surrender both her body and mind to her entirely.
And in exchange, she would do the same.
Pei Shujing subtly reprimanded: “Are you suggesting this Prince is old?”
“…Not at all! Your Highness, don’t slander me!”
Xie Ning couldn’t stand Pei Shujing wrongly accusing her like this, so she buried her head back into Pei Shujing’s chest defensively.
A glint sparked in Pei Shujing’s eyes. She spoke to Xie Ning in an even more gentle tone:
“Ning, I beg of you, please ensure Jiejie is happy tonight.”
“Yes!”
