Shocking! The Protagonist of the Mpreg Story Is a Straight Man - Chapter 18
Xue Xingqi didn’t leave after he arrived; having finally managed to see Pei Nan, he felt that at the very least, they had to share a meal for it to be worth the trip.
When it came time for dinner that evening, Pei Nan shot down Xue Xingqi’s idea of eating out. With his eyes downcast and a weary tone, he said, “Old Wang won’t let us eat or drink whatever we want anymore. The nutritional meals are in the sports complex lounge; let’s just eat there.”
Jingcheng Sports University was wealthy and influential, and the configuration of their nutritional meals was comparable to those of national athletes. While the nutrition was well-balanced, one couldn’t demand too much in terms of flavor. Under Pei Nan’s completely disloyal gaze, Xue Xingqi chose to eat the “coach’s meal.”
As the two sat opposite each other, the aroma of the food across from him nearly filled Pei Nan’s nose.
“This is too cruel for me. Maybe you should go sit at that table over there to eat instead.”
Hearing this, Xue Xingqi moved his meal box a bit further away and smiled. “Your exercise volume is so high, do you still need to control your diet?”
“Originally we didn’t have to, but Old Wang went away for training a while ago. When he came back, he caught us and started all sorts of reforms. Supposedly, there was a change in leadership at the top, and they’ve standardized the rules and regulations for various competitions while strengthening management. So, the levels below have to follow suit,” Pei Nan explained roughly.
Xue Xingqi expressed his understanding.
After finishing their meal, the two had their own respective activities and parted ways after a few words.
That night, Pei Nan was lying in bed sleeping soundly, but as soon as midnight passed, he bolted upright. Chen Bin, who was still battling away in a game on the opposite bed, pulled back his curtain and took a look. “Nan-dad, what’s up? Did you have a nightmare?”
Pei Nan gritted his teeth and replied, “Yeah. You go to sleep, I’m fine.”
Hearing Pei Nan say it was a nightmare, Chen Bin felt relieved and offered a few words of comfort. “Dreams are all fake. Nan-dad, don’t worry and go to sleep; I’m right here guarding you!”
“Fine, fine, fine, thank you.”
Chen Bin returned behind his curtain, but Pei Nan remained frozen and motionless. 419 was so anxious it turned red.
“Host, Host, are you alright?”
“You try being electrocuted while you’re sleeping. If I didn’t drop dead on the spot, it’s only because of my good physical health.” Pei Nan’s entire body was still in a state of high tension; he even felt as if his hair was standing on end. Current was zig-zagging across the surface of his skin it was incredibly effective at waking someone up, to say the least.
“This broken system… if it’s not turning me into a rabbit, it’s electrocuting me. Can’t it have some milder methods? Doesn’t such an extreme system violate the spirit of humanitarianism? How has it not been destroyed yet?”
419 was also very helpless. “I didn’t expect it to use electric shocks after the upgrade either.”
“Forget it, you’re just a useless little ball. It’s not your fault.” Pei Nan pulled up the task panel, only to see it written in bright red letters:
Task: Cumulatively ‘touch’ the neighboring campus hunk for 30 hours. Countdown: 7 days. Task Progress: 5%. Task Failure Penalty: Electric shock, executed once every 24 hours based on changes in task progress.
Pei Nan read every single word of this notice with extreme care; his attitude of serious study was more rigorous than when he was solving problems in the college entrance exam hall. He pointed at the last line and asked 419, “What level of progress is enough to avoid being shocked?”
“This… I just submitted a report to ask. The higher-ups said to figure it out yourself. The algorithm is decided based on the interactions between you and Xue Xingqi.”
419 didn’t know how Pei Nan interpreted that sentence. In any case, it watched as its host raised an eyebrow, let out a snort of laughter, and lay back down to continue sleeping.
Because of the electric shock, the quality of Pei Nan’s sleep for the remainder of the night was not great. Right up until he got out of bed, he felt as though he hadn’t slept enough. If “morning grumpiness” could be manifested physically, the entire University Town would be covered in dark clouds. The pressure radiating from his body was terrifyingly low.
Chen Bin originally wanted to hide away like a quail, but suddenly his phone started beeping. He hurriedly turned off the notification sound, opened it to check the message, and then glanced toward the bathroom.
When Pei Nan came out after washing up, he saw Chen Bin walking in carrying several breakfast bags.
“You just went down to buy those?” Crucially, the outer packaging didn’t look like it was from anywhere near the school.
Chen Bin smiled with an exceptionally sycophantic look. “How could I? These are what God Xue just called me down to get. I’m basking in your light, Nan-dad! This place’s crab roe soup dumplings are legendary supposedly they never do takeout!”
Pei Nan’s brow furrowed imperceptibly. “Why did he have you run the errand to get them?”
“God Xue said your phone was turned off, so he had no choice but to ask if I was around.” Chen Bin was very sensible. “Come, come, come, Nan-dad, you eat first.”
“You eat it.” Pei Nan waved his hand and went to his bed to dig through his phone. He tapped the screen, and sure enough, there was no reaction.
He took the phone to charge it while Chen Bin was over there eating with gusto. “So fresh, so fragrant! My god, Nan-dad, you and God Xue are tight. He even brings you breakfast; if only he were in our dorm.”
“Is that so? It’s a double dorm. Who do you think should move out?”
Chen Bin took a massive bite of a siu mai and gestured toward himself while mumbling incoherently.
Pei Nan was amused by his clowning, and his mood lightened considerably. Just then, the phone had enough power to turn on. He saw the missed call notifications, opened WeChat, and sent a “thank you” to Xue Xingqi.
After thinking about it, he asked if he had time and if he wanted to go mountain climbing.
After sending the message, Pei Nan felt a bit embarrassed. As the saying goes, he used to be cold and indifferent, but now he was somewhat “climbing high” (seeking a favor from someone out of his league). But this mountain had to be climbed; otherwise, how would he gain those “touching” points? He couldn’t just cling to Xue Xingqi all day he was a straight man!
419 couldn’t even bear to watch.
Fortunately, Xue Xingqi replied very quickly, saying they could go on Saturday and asking if that worked for Pei Nan.
Pei Nan readily agreed, and the dark clouds hanging over his head finally drifted away slowly. Seeing that Xue Xingqi’s reply speed was very fast, he figured the other person probably wasn’t driving and didn’t have much going on. He decided to place a video call to Xue Xingqi. Once it connected, he propped the phone up on the table using an object the posture made it look like he was about to put on a “mukbang” performance for Xue Xingqi.
“Did you go home yesterday?”
Xue Xingqi had been organizing materials for a meeting. After picking up the video call, he focused on chatting with Pei Nan.
“Yeah, my younger sister insisted on seeing me, so I had no choice but to go back for a trip.”
Pei Nan recalled the beautiful and cute little girl he had met that one time and thought it was indeed very hard to say no to her.
Chen Bin, hearing Xue Xingqi’s voice nearby, poked his head into the frame. “Thanks for the breakfast, God Xue! I’ll definitely perform well today, work hard, and perfectly complete the tasks assigned by the organization!”
Pei Nan pushed his head away. “What tasks do you have?”
Chen Bin gave a sheepish laugh. “That… it’s to serve you. I’ve joined God Xue’s team. You might even see me at the next meeting.”
Pei Nan didn’t doubt this, as Xue Xingqi had mentioned it during their last meeting. He simply said with a half-smile, “Bin-zi, the time to pay me back has come.”
Xue Xingqi looked at the high-spirited Pei Nan in the camera and thought that this was very good. If he was happy, that was enough; and if he wasn’t happy, he would coax him until he was.
