She’s Fiercer Than Zombies - Chapter 51 (THE END)
Qiao Gaogao and the others helped deal with some of the more troublesome zombies. Each time they finished, they would return to the research facility in the uninhabited zone as quickly as possible. During this period, Qiao’s parents, worried about their safety, came to check on them twice. Only after confirming that Yinxi was perfectly fine did they finally feel reassured and leave.
“Senior!” Qiao Gaogao’s excited voice rang out from afar.
Yinxi, who was sitting inside an isolation room, immediately stood up upon hearing her voice.
Soon, she saw Qiao Gaogao enter, holding a bouquet of flowers.
Flowers?
Yinxi was momentarily stunned.
The flowers in Qiao Gaogao’s hands weren’t anything particularly rare or expensive just simple wildflowers picked from the roadside. Yet, after being carefully arranged by her, they looked fresh and charming.
“Senior, the weather outside has warmed up, and flowers have started to bloom.” Qiao Gaogao’s eyes sparkled like stars. She believed this was another sign that the world was getting better.
Yinxi was completely taken aback. Since she had begun participating in the research, she hadn’t been above ground at all. She had no idea that the world outside had transformed from scorching heat to such a warm, pleasant season, with flowers blooming everywhere.
Qiao Gaogao grinned and passed the flowers through a small window on the side of the isolation room. “I specially gathered these for you, Senior!”
The moment she saw the flowers blooming, her first thought was to bring them back and share them with Yinxi.
Yinxi took the bouquet, inhaling its faint, delicate fragrance. Unconsciously, her brows relaxed, and a soft smile spread across her face.
She remembered the day Gaogao had confessed her feelings. That day, she had also brought a bouquet of flowers. Unfortunately, the zombie outbreak had followed soon after, and those flowers had ended up being used as a makeshift weapon against the zombies.
But today, Gaogao was giving her flowers again.
With that thought, she picked out the prettiest little white flower from the bouquet and handed it back through the window. “This is for Gaogao.”
Since she couldn’t leave the room yet, this was her way of returning the gesture.
Yinxi’s action made Qiao Gaogao’s eyes light up with delight. If not for the thick glass wall separating them, she would have hugged Yinxi tightly right then and there.
Carefully accepting the flower, she thought for a moment before tucking it into her hair. She then turned to Yinxi with a sweet smile.
Yinxi was momentarily surprised but soon responded with a soft, gentle smile, her gaze lingering on Gaogao.
Qiao Gaogao sat down directly in front of the glass wall, staring resentfully at the barrier that kept them apart. “Senior,” she asked mournfully, “how much longer until you can come out?”
From time to time, Yinxi had to undergo blood draws. After each draw, there were concerns that her body’s metrics might become unbalanced due to blood loss. Thus, she had to remain in the isolation room for a full 24 hours after each procedure to ensure everything was stable before she could leave.
Yinxi glanced at the time. “Soon, just about three more hours.”
Qiao Gaogao pouted, her voice full of grievance. “I haven’t seen you in days, and now that I finally get to, I still can’t hug you!”
This time, she had been away for several days with Song Qingxu and the others. No one knew how much she had missed her senior while she was outside.
“In three hours, once I’m out, you can hug me as much as you want, for as long as you like,” Yinxi reassured her softly.
In truth, she missed Gaogao terribly. In the days since Gaogao had been away, she couldn’t even focus on reading a book. Although she knew that with her and Song Qingxu’s abilities, there was no need to worry about anything going wrong, her heart still couldn’t help but remain unsettled.
Qiao Gaogao pouted and sat down outside the isolation room, deciding not to leave. She began telling Yinxi about various things.
As the country’s safe bases grew increasingly stable, some industries began to recover. Many essential daily necessities for the people had also started production, alleviating the issue of material shortages to some extent.
“Senior, senior! I have something to tell you!” After rambling about this and that, Qiao Gaogao mysteriously winked at Yinxi.
“Hmm? What is it?” Yinxi cooperatively crouched by the glass, pressing her ear against it, her face filled with curiosity and excitement.
What should have been a normal conversation inexplicably took on a sneaky, furtive vibe between the two.
Qiao Gaogao was also excited, suppressing her emotions as she whispered, “I saw Tang Jiu secretly kissing Song Qingxu!”
Did she even realize how thrilled she was when she witnessed that?
She always knew her intuition with her senior couldn’t be wrong!
Sure enough! There was something going on between Tang Jiu and Song Qingxu!
Yinxi’s eyes widened slightly. “Really?”
Qiao Gaogao nodded repeatedly. “Of course it’s true! I saw it with my own eyes!”
It wasn’t her fault for peeking, the two of them hadn’t closed the door properly. When she went to look for them, she happened to see it. Song Qingxu was still asleep, and Tang Jiu had stealthily kissed her on the cheek.
When she saw this, she was stunned herself, then quietly left to avoid letting Tang Jiu know she had been there. How awkward would it be if they were exposed?
“What was Song Qingxu’s reaction?” Yinxi asked in a hushed voice.
“She was asleep, so she probably didn’t know,” Qiao Gaogao said, stroking her chin.
“Hmm…” Yinxi shook her head disapprovingly. “With Song Qingxu’s abilities, how could she not notice someone approaching her?”
“Ah?” Qiao Gaogao looked at her in astonishment.
Yinxi cleared her throat lightly, her ears turning red. “If I kissed you while you were asleep, would you notice?”
Qiao Gaogao thought about it and compared it to her own experience, realizing it made sense. Especially after surviving in a world overrun by zombies, they had developed a habit of staying alert even while sleeping.
Though she had Yinxi by her side, her alertness wasn’t as heightened, but she could still sense Yinxi approaching to kiss her. How much more alert must Song Qingxu be?
She was definitely more vigilant than Qiao Gaogao.
So, she must have sensed Tang Jiu was about to kiss her but pretended to be asleep and unaware?!
“She’s so sneaky!” Qiao Gaogao commented. Pretending to be asleep just to be kissed, how could she do something like that without feeling embarrassed?
Yinxi chuckled softly. “Maybe she didn’t know how to face it and decided to pretend she didn’t know to avoid the situation?”
Qiao Gaogao pouted. Regardless, there was definitely something going on between them!
Life at the research institute was monotonous yet interesting. Monotonous because there was hardly anything fun to do, but interesting because her loved ones and friends were by her side. During their free time, the group would gather to play games they were the most carefree bunch around.
Amidst these days, Yinxi’s parents made progress in their research. Although they couldn’t yet render the zombies immobile, they had managed to slow down the zombies’ evolution, preventing them from rapidly advancing by devouring their own kind as they had before.
While developing the zombie serum, the authorities also had to consider future management models. After all, the zombie outbreak was quickly followed by the awakening of supernatural abilities. At this point in time, individuals with supernatural abilities were an extremely valuable resource. However, once the world stabilized, these individuals could become a source of instability.
Managing supernatural ability users effectively was an urgent matter.
Moreover, even if zombies were completely eradicated in the future, no one could guarantee that no new supernatural ability users would awaken.
After careful consideration, the authorities temporarily decided to appoint Qiao Gaogao and Song Qingxu to jointly lead the supernatural ability users. Both of them possessed formidable strength, which would serve as an effective deterrent.
However, Qiao Gaogao was not entirely satisfied with this arrangement. She had no desire to take on such a responsibility. Managing supernatural ability users was no easy task, and it was bound to bring countless troubles in the future. She simply wanted to live a stable life, staying close to Yinxi and her parents far better than worrying about such matters.
As for Song Qingxu, after a glance at Tang Jiu, she decided to accept the appointment. Taking on this role might help shorten the distance between her and Tang Jiu.
In the second year after the development of the inhibitor reagent, a zombie vaccine was successfully created. From then on, people no longer had to worry about turning into zombies after being scratched or bitten by one.
In the third year, the movement of zombies was successfully restricted, and humanity began a full-scale eradication campaign. The team of supernatural ability users led by Song Qingxu performed exceptionally well and stood out prominently.
As for Yinxi, the most unique zombie, after her parents conducted extensive research and completely eliminated the infectious nature of her condition, she regained her status as a citizen of the country.
Yinxi’s parents also developed various flavored reagents to replace blood, ensuring she wouldn’t grow weak or listless due to a long-term lack of blood intake.
Among these reagents, Yinxi developed a particular fondness for the strawberry-flavored ones. She carried several packs with her every day, often snacking on them whenever she felt like it.
By the fifth year, the country had completely stabilized. Qiao Gaogao and Yinxi held their wedding. On the day of the ceremony, to show their respect and recognition, the authorities even sent representatives to attend. This led many to speculate that the legalization of same-sex marriage might soon be on the agenda.
On their wedding day, Qiao Gaogao and Yinxi received blessings from their family and friends. Hand in hand, they looked at each other with eyes full of hope for the future.
They believed that as long as they held each other’s hands tightly, they would never drift apart in the days to come.
