She’s Fiercer Than Zombies - Chapter 37
After detailed self-introductions, Qiao Gaogao and Yinxi stared at Tang Jiu in stunned silence, never expecting that the person described as having a bad temper would have such an impressive background!
The only daughter of the wealthiest family in Haicheng, if this were a novel, she’d be the so-called “elite circle young lady”!
“How did it come to this?” Qiao Gaogao asked sincerely.
After all, she was an elite circle young lady, how had she fallen to such a state? In novels, aren’t there supposed to be bodyguards and the like for protection?
Tang Jiu: “…”
She suppressed her temper. If this person hadn’t previously saved Song Qingxu, she would have surely cursed her out thoroughly!
Was that remark meant to mock her or to subtly insult her?
Seeing her expression, Qiao Gaogao awkwardly shut her mouth, belatedly realizing that her words hadn’t sounded very kind.
Yinxi found it amusing but didn’t dare laugh in front of Tang Jiu and the others, struggling to hold back her laughter.
Song Qingxu smiled helplessly and turned her gaze to Yinxi. “May I ask, Miss Yin, what exactly is going on with you?”
Hearing this question, Yinxi shot them an annoyed look. Did these two really have to be so sharp-eyed, recognizing at a glance that she was a zombie?
Noticing her gaze, Song Qingxu felt a bit embarrassed. She blamed herself for being overly cautious the moment she saw that Yinxi was a zombie, she had instinctively attacked.
“Senior mutated into a zombie from the very beginning, so she still retains her human consciousness,” Qiao Gaogao explained as she pulled two bottles of water and some bread and instant noodles from her backpack. Looking at them, she asked, “How long has it been since you’ve eaten? You both look completely drained.”
Tang Jiu: “…”
“Here, eat.” Qiao Gaogao placed the food on their table and, seeing that there was nothing else to do, prepared to leave after all, she hadn’t even had breakfast yet.
“Thank you,” Tang Jiu said softly, immediately taking the water to feed Song Qingxu.
“You drink first. Your lips are chapped,” Song Qingxu frowned, looking at her lips.
Ignoring her, Tang Jiu carefully pressed the bottle to her lips, insisting she drink.
A flicker of realization crossed Song Qingxu’s brow. Tang Jiu had truly matured so much, no longer the willful and unruly young lady she once was.
Yet, seeing her forced to grow up so quickly pained Song Qingxu. She would have preferred her to remain as she was before at least that version of Tang Jiu lived freely and selfishly, without so much unhappiness.
After a moment’s thought, Qiao Gaogao added before leaving, “Don’t go outside recklessly. The area is swarming with zombies now.”
“Thank you. If there’s ever anything I can do to help in the future, just say the word,” Song Qingxu said, struggling to prop herself up halfway to see them off.
Qiao Gaogao waved her hand and left with Yinxi.
Once outside, Qiao Gaogao looked at Yinxi, pursing her lips into a smile.
Yinxi glanced at her, puzzled, unsure what she meant.
“Senior, I’m so glad you’re by my side,” Qiao Gaogao said, stepping forward to link arms with her and leaning her head against Yinxi’s shoulder.
Yinxi was like a cheat code. Without her by her side, the zombies would have surely overwhelmed her in hordes. No matter how strong she was, she couldn’t withstand such numbers, and once her special abilities were depleted, she’d be utterly defenseless.
“Growl, growl!” It’s good to have Gaogao by my side too.
Qiao Gaogao smiled. The senior didn’t understand most of her current comfortable life was thanks to her.
Take Song Qingxu, for example. She felt Song Qingxu’s abilities weren’t bad and probably not much worse than her own, yet Song had it much rougher. Forget zombies making way for her; it was a blessing they hadn’t torn her apart.
After returning to their room, washing up, and changing into clean, warm clothes, the two remembered the thin athletic wear Song Qingxu and the others were wearing. Out of kindness, they decided to bring them some cold-weather clothing before heading downstairs to catch seafood for congee breakfast.
By the time they went downstairs, most of the zombies outside had dispersed. Qiao Gaogao cleared out the remaining ones before following Yinxi to the seaside. As for how to catch seafood.
Qiao Gaogao had no experience.
Neither did Yinxi, so they could only head to the beach for some tidal foraging. Nowadays, no one else was out beachcombing this early, so they figured they might have some luck.
Fully geared up, each carrying a small bucket and tools like shovels, they approached the beach. Even before getting close, the salty scent carried by the wind reached them. Yinxi sniffed and found it tolerable.
Qiao Gaogao, however, was more bothered by it. But no matter how much it irked her, she really wanted seafood!
They hadn’t been there long when they heard some noise behind them. Turning around, they saw Tang Jiu also carrying tools, carefully avoiding the remaining wandering zombies as she made her way over.
“You.” Qiao Gaogao hesitated as Tang Jiu approached. Hadn’t they been told not to go out unnecessarily?
Tang Jiu’s face was pale as she glanced toward the beach and whispered, “She’s injured and needs some nutritious food.”
Hearing this, Qiao Gaogao nodded in understanding. Since she and her senior were there, she figured it should be safe enough and let it slide.
Once on the beach, Yinxi took charge due to her prior experience, directing while Qiao Gaogao did the digging. Gradually, Qiao Gaogao got the hang of it, and they started foraging separately.
Unexpectedly, Tang Jiu also seemed quite skilled. In no time, she had dug up several razor clams and picked up two crabs the size of fists.
Who would have thought she had this talent?
Inspired by Tang Jiu’s haul, Qiao Gaogao doubled her efforts but only managed to find a few snails.
Taking a deep breath, Qiao Gaogao peeked into Yinxi’s bucket and her eyes widened there was even a lobster!
A huge lobster, almost the size of a palm!
Watching Yinxi pull a crab out from a crevice, Qiao Gaogao’s eyes sparkled.
“Senior, you’re amazing!”
In such a short time, she’d gathered an impressive catch!
Hearing the praise, Yinxi proudly placed the crab into Qiao Gaogao’s bucket before continuing her search.
Perhaps it had been too long since anyone had foraged here, as the beach was abundant with resources. Soon, both their buckets were more than half full. Meanwhile, Tang Jiu worked even harder and faster, her bucket already filled to the brim!
Seeing that they had gathered almost everything, Qiao Gaogao suggested heading back. Tang Jiu followed them, watching as Qiao Gaogao effortlessly dispatched the zombies. Tang Jiu remained silent, her expression thoughtful.
To her, the zombies were an extreme danger, yet to an ability user, they were nothing more than a flick of the wrist.
Back at the hotel, they couldn’t exactly start cooking in their rooms, so the three of them decided to prepare the food in the hotel’s backyard. To their delight, they discovered a well. It was clear the well hadn’t been used in a long time, covered by a concrete slab. Moving the slab aside, they could now draw water!
Tang Jiu was the most thrilled. With this well, they wouldn’t have to worry about water for the foreseeable future!
After drawing water and thoroughly cleaning all the seafood, Qiao Gaogao noticed Tang Jiu had no rice and gave her some.
This gesture brought tears to Tang Jiu’s eyes. Before the apocalypse, she had been a pampered young lady, showered with attention. But after the catastrophe, she had tasted the harsh realities of life and realized that the only one who truly cared for her was Song Qingxu.
Now, she had met Qiao Gaogao and the others, who were so kind, a rarity in this post-apocalyptic world.
“Hey, don’t cry! If Song Qingxu thinks I’m bullying you again, she might just strike me with lightning!” Qiao Gaogao felt uneasy seeing her like this. She really wasn’t used to such emotional moments.
“Grr!” Yinxi nodded seriously. She didn’t want to get struck by lightning again she had just managed to clean herself up!
Tang Jiu: “…”
Her face flushed bright red, and she silently went to handle the seafood.
Qiao Gaogao and Yinxi had gathered quite a lot. After Qiao Gaogao made a pot of seafood congee, there was still plenty left, so she started grilling the rest.
“Want some, Senior?” Qiao Gaogao placed a bowl of the freshly cooked seafood congee in front of Yinxi.
Yinxi hesitated. Ever since she started drinking blood, she hadn’t eaten normal food, but now she wanted to give it a try.
She picked up the bowl and took a slow sip, then nodded.
Meanwhile, Tang Jiu had finished preparing her food. It was clear she wasn’t much of a cook, but she didn’t dare waste anything. She simply steamed all the seafood, then slowly picked out the edible meat and mixed it into her congee. That was her version of seafood congee.
Qiao Gaogao: “…”
Yinxi stared in disbelief.
But really, who’s to say this wasn’t seafood congee?
Qiao Gaogao handed her some seasonings and asked, “Who usually cooks for you two?”
Seafood was one thing she could manage it this way but what about other ingredients? How did she handle those?
“Song Qingxu does,” Tang Jiu replied softly.
Qiao Gaogao understood. “She’s really good to you.”
Earlier, when Song Qingxu thought Tang Jiu was in danger, she had dragged her injured body to rescue her.
Tang Jiu pursed her lips and nodded. “She is very good.”
Without Song Qingxu protecting her along the way, she would have died countless times already.
“What’s your relationship? Why is she so good to you?” Qiao Gaogao asked, her curiosity piqued.
Hearing the gossip, Yinxi perked up, her ears alert as she stared intently at Tang Jiu.
