She Seems to Struggle with Having a Wife - Chapter 6
Qin Mu was quite surprised and was about to ask another question when Gao Jingchen finished his phone call and came over. Seeing Wei Qing’an holding her bag and phone, looking as if she were ready to leave, he instinctively asked, “Are you being called away by your boss again?”
Wei Qing’an nodded. “Yes, there’s something I need to take care of.”
“Well!” Gao Jingchen hesitated, glancing at her before turning to Qin Mu. “President Qin, did you drive? I have an urgent matter to attend to later. Could you give our Teacher Wei a ride to the museum?”
Qin Mu lowered her chin, which had been tilted up, and stood up, agreeing, “Sure.”
“Thank you for the trouble. I’ll treat you to a meal sometime.”
As Gao Jingchen said this, Wei Qing’an’s expression darkened slightly, clearly bothered by his words.
Qin Mu waved it off, saying it was no trouble at all.
With everything arranged, the three of them left the restaurant together.
Gao Jingchen seemed genuinely in a hurry. After bidding them goodbye, he jogged away.
Once again, it was just the two of them left.
Although Qin Mu liked Wei Qing’an, she had no desire to converse with someone whose mind was entirely consumed by work it would only lead to awkward silence.
A sudden gust of wind swept through, tousling her beautiful hair.
Qin Mu raised her hand to tuck the stray strands behind her ear. The faint blush on her profile made Wei Qing’an feel unexpectedly captivated.
Unconsciously, she recalled Xiao Chenzi’s words from the dinner table.
“I couldn’t find a parking spot when I arrived, so I parked a bit farther away,” Qin Mu explained, adding, “If you’re in a hurry, I can hail a taxi for you. Traffic shouldn’t be bad at this hour.”
Hearing her thoughtful arrangements, Wei Qing’an took off her glasses, placed them in the case she always carried, and suddenly said, “Earlier at the table, when Xiao Chenzi mentioned his sister-in-law staying alone in an empty room, I started wondering have I been holding you back?”
Qin Mu abruptly stopped walking, her expression freezing. A chill she couldn’t bear rose from the soles of her feet to the top of her head.
No matter how shrewd and considerate she appeared in front of colleagues and outsiders, at this moment, Wei Qing’an’s few words made her legs feel so weak she could barely stand. Even her hands, hanging at her sides, trembled slightly.
Qin Mu swallowed hard, forcing back the tears welling in the corners of her eyes, and said in a low voice, “I was the one who proposed to you. Whether I’m being held back or not is for me to decide. If you’ve found someone you like and want a divorce, or if you feel our marriage isn’t worth it, I’m ready to go to the civil affairs bureau with you anytime to finalize it.”
“I…” Wei Qing’an wanted to say more, but Qin Mu had already walked away.
Wei Qing’an watched her go and sighed softly.
She was only afraid that Qin Mu was sacrificing too much.
In the year they had been married, Wei Qing’an had returned home only a handful of times. She didn’t even know how much credit was left on the electricity card and had never properly sat down to share a meal with Qin Mu.
Qin Mu was only twenty-five, in the prime of her youth, yet she had hastily married her.
How could Wei Qing’an feel at ease with that?
In the car, Qin Mu remained silent, her face cold.
The atmosphere was icy.
Wei Qing’an tried to lighten the mood with a few words but received only a perfunctory “Mm” from Qin Mu.
As they neared the museum, Wei Qing’an said, “Let’s skip the museum tonight and go home.”
This time, Qin Mu didn’t even bother with a response.
After arriving home, they washed up and went to bed.
Qin Mu lay with her back to Wei Qing’an, revealing only a cascade of black hair.
When Wei Qing’an and Qin Mu got married, the novelty kept them close at first. They slept in the same bed at night, and though they did nothing intimate, there was no awkwardness between them.
Later, as Wei Qing’an frequently traveled for work, the initial freshness faded and awkwardness began to creep in. Yet neither suggested sleeping separately, so they continued sharing a bed.
Just like now.
Under a thin blanket, warmth gradually spread over both of them.
But Wei Qing’an only felt a growing chill.
By the moonlight in the darkness, Wei Qing’an gazed at the angry silhouette of Qin Mu’s back, unable to understand why she was upset.
Qin Mu didn’t love her this marriage was merely an excuse to avoid persistent suitors. Yet Qin Mu hadn’t publicly acknowledged being married, so what value did this union hold for her?
Besides, Wei Qing’an had her own.
As Wei Qing’an pondered this, soft breathing reached her ears.
Qin Mu had fallen asleep.
Wei Qing’an sighed helplessly once more, then lay flat and closed her eyes.
The next morning, Qin Mu was woken by her alarm.
She reached out to turn it off and tried to get up, but a weight pressed down on her waist. Lifting the thin blanket, she saw it was Wei Qing’an’s arm.
Warm breaths brushed against the back of her neck.
Only then did Qin Mu realize she was nestled in Wei Qing’an’s embrace.
Before falling asleep, Wei Qing’an was always proper and restrained, but once asleep, she’d inevitably stretch out an arm and pull Qin Mu close.
A habit Wei Qing’an herself probably wasn’t even aware of.
For a fleeting moment, Qin Mu wanted to indulge in that half-embrace. But remembering Wei Qing’an’s mention of divorce the night before, a sharp pain pierced her heart, and she couldn’t let go of how easily the word had been spoken.
So she removed Wei Qing’an’s arm, threw off the blanket, slipped on her shoes, and headed to the bathroom to wash up before getting ready for work.
When she came out, Wei Qing’an was already awake, sitting calmly on the bed, leaning against the pillows.
“Good morning,” Wei Qing’an greeted her first.
Qin Mu didn’t keep her cold expression. “Morning.”
Hearing that stiff reply, Wei Qing’an awkwardly scratched her head and fell silent, simply watching Qin Mu apply her makeup.
Once Qin Mu finished getting ready, she noticed Wei Qing’an still sitting on the bed and casually asked, “Want to have breakfast?”
“Sure,” Wei Qing’an nodded.
Qin Mu hummed in acknowledgment, opened the door, and went to the kitchen to prepare breakfast.
There were just enough ingredients in the fridge for two. Since there wasn’t enough milk, Qin Mu poured a glass only for Wei Qing’an.
Knowing Wei Qing’an had a sensitive stomach, she even warmed it up.
Just as she finished, Wei Qing’an emerged.
Sitting across from Qin Mu, Wei Qing’an picked up the milk glass, feeling its warmth seep into her hands.
She glanced up at Qin Mu, who was eating across from her, and said softly, “Thank you.”
“Mm. Are you heading to work later?” Qin Mu asked.
Wei Qing’an took a sip of milk. “Yes.”
“I’ll drive you,” Qin Mu said, then added, “I’m going to the office anyway, so it’s on the way.”
Wei Qing’an had grown accustomed to Qin Mu’s insistence on driving her to work, she always took a firm stance, leaving no room for refusal. But today, this easily irritated “little rabbit” had surprisingly offered an explanation.
After breakfast, Qin Mu went to wash the dishes. She preferred not to leave them until evening, believing in handling tasks promptly.
Wei Qing’an had gathered the plates and was about to wash them herself when Qin Mu stopped her: “These plates are expensive. I’ll do it.”
The underlying message: she was afraid Wei Qing’an might break them.
Wei Qing’an had no choice but to let go and settled for wiping the table clean.
After getting ready, the two of them headed out together.
When going to work, Qin Mu would wear professional attire, and her makeup was always meticulously done, exuding the aura of a powerful CEO.
Wei Qing’an rarely saw this side of Qin Mu, so she often regarded her as a younger sister who had just entered society someone who hadn’t yet learned to grow up and whose considerations were immature. Now, it seemed her perception of Qin Mu had been too narrow.
Wei Qing’an thought it over seriously and said softly, “I was wrong to bring up divorce with you last night. I’m sorry.”
Qin Mu looked at her in surprise, wondering if this blockhead was finally starting to understand things. Could she actually admit her mistakes?
So Qin Mu deliberately challenged her, “What exactly were you wrong about?”
Wei Qing’an replied without thinking, “Every single word I said was wrong.”
She said it with such sincerity that Qin Mu couldn’t help but laugh. She turned her head to hide a smile before turning back to Wei Qing’an with a serious expression. “How do you know you were wrong? Specifically, where did you go wrong? Write a 300-word self-criticism and hand it to me by tonight.”
“Ah?” Wei Qing’an was dumbfounded.
Beep just then, the elevator arrived. Qin Mu stepped inside.
Once inside, she pressed the button for the basement level and said to Wei Qing’an, who was still standing outside in shock, “Aren’t you coming?”
“Ah, yes.” Wei Qing’an snapped out of it and entered.
On the way, Wei Qing’an asked Qin Mu very seriously, “Do I really have to write a 300-word self-criticism?”
Qin Mu, driving with one hand while checking the rearview mirror to change lanes, replied, “Do you think 300 words is too little? Then make it 500.”
Wei Qing’an quickly denied it, “No, no, 300 is enough.”
It was just that, from childhood to adulthood, she had always been a model student and had never written a self-criticism before.
And now, it had to be about apologizing for mentioning divorce.
As they approached the museum entrance, Qin Mu reminded her again, “Send it to me by 6 p.m. I’ll read it after I get off work. A score of 60 is passing. If you fail, you’ll rewrite it tonight.”
Wei Qing’an instinctively asked, “What are the grading criteria?”
Qin Mu pulled the car over to the side and looked at Wei Qing’an. “It depends on my mood at the time. It could be a 59 or a 100.”
Then, without hesitation, she urged, “We’re here. Hurry up and get out. I’m going to be late for work.”
Wei Qing’an didn’t even have a moment to argue. She unbuckled her seatbelt and obediently got out of the car, though her expression was clearly frustrated.
As soon as Wei Qing’an stepped out, before she could even wave goodbye, Qin Mu started the car and merged back into traffic.
Long after Qin Mu had driven away, Wei Qing’an remained standing in place, thinking about the 300-word self-criticism. She, Wei Qing’an, had always excelled academically, studied diligently, and never even had points deducted let alone written a self-criticism.
Three hundred words. How was she supposed to write it?
Troubled, Wei Qing’an turned and walked into the museum.
Because of the delay that morning, Qin Mu arrived at work right on time for the first time. Zhang Fan, seeing the CEO walk in at 9:03, followed her in with a tone of disbelief and asked, “CEO Qin, you’re late, huh?”
“No,” Qin Mu denied, “I made it just in time.”
Beep Qin Mu swiped her card to enter the office. Zhang Fan followed her in with a stack of documents and closed the door behind them.
“CEO Qin, these are the documents needed for today’s meeting. I’ve already made detailed annotations and photocopied them.” Zhang Fan handed her one of the copies. “This one is for you. Please take a look.”
Qin Mu first turned on her computer before reaching out to take it.
She had been in a bit of a rush earlier, and after sitting down, she was still catching her breath.
Qin Mu lowered his head, focusing intently on the documents. Zhang Fan conscientiously placed all the materials on Qin Mu’s desk, then turned on the coffee machine to prepare a milk coffee without ice for him something the boss particularly enjoyed.
Once the coffee was ready, Zhang Fan set it beside Qin Mu and said, “Boss, your milk coffee is ready.”
“Mhm, thank you,” Qin Mu replied, still engrossed in the documents.
After setting it down, Zhang Fan stole a glance at Qin Mu, then moved to the opposite side of the desk, pulled out a chair, and sat down with a gossipy tone. “Boss, I saw the flower you posted on your Moments yesterday and the one BOSS posted they look really similar.”
Qin Mu flipped a page, not paying much attention. “What do you mean?”
Thinking he was about to uncover some juicy gossip, Zhang Fan immediately pulled out his phone, opened Gao Jingchen’s Moments, and showed it to Qin Mu. “Boss, look, aren’t the flowers you two posted the exact same one?”
