She Said That Kisses and Hugs Are Needed for Redemption [Quick Transmigration] - Chapter 28
Silence flowed between the two. Fu Lancen slowly pulled back the corners of her mouth and moved away from the woman’s embrace, speaking with a mix of nervousness and helplessness. “Do you not want to have fox cubs with me?”
But as soon as the words left her mouth, she caught the moisture in the woman’s eyes. Her expression froze, and a sudden sense of unease filled her heart. She held her breath and asked tentatively, “Why… are you not speaking?”
“If…” Lu Xi started to say something but swallowed it back down. She did not want to see the little fox cry. She feared that if she witnessed the fox’s despair and feelings of being wronged, she would be unable to bear leaving.
“I mean, if we want fox babies, we might need to spend another few thousand or tens of thousands of years in our world of two. I still want… I still want to stay with you longer.”
The last few words were gentle and trembling, with a lingering attachment hidden in the increasingly low and slow cadence of her voice.
Fu Lancen narrowed her eyes, studying the woman’s seemingly normal expression for a long time. Seeing nothing amiss, she guessed that perhaps it was simply because she had brought up the subject of children for the first time, leaving Lu Xi somewhat at a loss. She curled her lip and leaned back against Lu Xi’s shoulder. “Then let us not talk about that for now.”
“I made all of these myself; you have to eat every single one.” She consciously changed the subject.
Lu Xi leaned in, taking the snacks the little fox held to her lips and eating them until everything was gone.
“And this one…”
The night in the Heavenly Realm grew even darker.
It was likely past midnight when a hand slowly reached out from behind the gauze curtains in the dim room. The woman, now fully dressed, looked back at the girl sleeping soundly on the bed. Her footsteps did not move an inch further. Finally, under the urgent prodding of 001, Lu Xi leaned down and pressed her final mark upon Fu Lancen’s cheek.
“Sleep well, my lady.”
When you wake, nothing in this world will ever threaten your survival again.
Her hand inside her sleeve clenched into a fist. Lu Xi suppressed all the reluctance in her heart, turned decisively, and vanished from the home she shared with Fu Lancen.
In the distant Northern Wilderness, a barrier woven from thousands of different divine powers stood majestic and far-reaching, glowing faintly in the night. It was nearly impossible for ordinary mortal eyes to see. This was the barrier set by the many Immortal Lords and Fairies guarding the array, designed to isolate the anomalies within the Northern Wilderness from the outside world and prevent panic across the realms.
Upon the distant mountain peak, churning black mist had already spread from the bottom of the cliff. Mixed with the piercing cold wind, it left one unavoidable wound after another upon those present.
Zhi Wu stood in mid-air, staring intently as the golden array was suppressed by the black mist. The four corners were slowly being torn into many tiny cracks. Even more dense demonic energy poured out, and the aura belonging to the Ancient Demon Sovereign grew wildly with the force of thunder. She looked toward the crowd and channeled even more divine power from her body. Along with the other immortals, rainbow-colored power seeped out, slowly repairing the multiplying cracks.
Though its effect was now minimal, as gods of the Heavenly Realm, they had to use every ounce of their strength to suppress it, even at the cost of their lives. However, the Demon Sovereign’s power was now at its peak. No matter how many of them there were, they were powerless to stop the array from shattering and the demonic energy from erupting.
Boom! The earth shook and the mountains swayed. The broken array let out a final, weak roar before turning into nothingness and vanishing completely into the dark depths of the cliff.
“The Demon Sovereign has emerged!” One Immortal Lord with exceptional vision had already locked onto the red-haired sovereign amidst the sky-covering mist. “We cannot let him…”
Before the Immortal Lord could finish his sentence, he was pierced by a bolt of dark light from the Demon Sovereign’s sleeve, and even his godhood was extinguished. The terrified crowd instinctively retreated several steps, but thinking of the lives behind them, they bit their teeth and charged forward with determined gazes.
The sky turned dark and the earth grew dim as sand and stones flew through the air. The ancient power of the Demon Sovereign was too great; the immortals born in the later eras were almost powerless to resist. It was only with the assistance of Zhi Wu, the Ancient Divine Dragon, that they managed to briefly suppress the sovereign’s killing moves through sheer numbers.
However, to their despair, the Demon Sovereign seemed to grow braver as the battle progressed. With a flip of his wrist, demonic energy overflowed, and in an instant, he summoned tens of thousands of demon soldiers. Seeing more and more immortals being slaughtered, Zhi Wu’s eyes turned bloodshot with urgency. She transformed into her original form and, along with the other dragons, used her hardened body as a weapon to strike the countless demon soldiers.
When Lu Xi arrived, it was like entering a living hell. Thick black mist rose everywhere, and the mountaintop was littered with the broken bodies of immortals. Hundreds of dragons, already covered in wounds, were still locked in combat with the demon army.
Zhi Wu caught sight of the newcomer out of the corner of her eye and felt a surge of joy. “Xi Ning!”
Xi Ning had told her before that there was a way to reseal the Demon Sovereign and that she only needed to guard this place. Now that Xi Ning had arrived, she felt an immediate sense of relief.
“Watch out!” In a moment of distraction, the Demon Sovereign launched a sneak attack at her. Fortunately, Xi Ning pulled her aside, helping her dodge the strike.
The red-haired Demon Sovereign had now completely emerged from the shattered array, standing arrogantly in the air and looking down upon the noble Ancient True God. “Xi Ning? You surely don’t believe that you alone can drive me back?”
Perhaps because he had not spoken for too long, the Demon Sovereign’s voice was raspy and cracked, like dry, broken branches falling into stagnant water and splashing up filth. Lu Xi did not expect to catch up with this old acquaintance of the original body. She exchanged a look with Zhi Wu, and they charged forward in perfect synchronization.
The dragon’s body, carrying lightning and thunder, struck at the Demon Sovereign’s head, exhaling spiritual energy to attack from above and below. Lu Xi, dressed in white, left a trace of the laws of the Heavenly Dao at every point she struck. Though she did not cause the sovereign heavy injury, she carefully connected every point before he noticed. As the powers converged, the void suddenly collapsed, forming a massive spatial vortex.
“You?!” The Demon Sovereign felt the pulling force. His eyes nearly split, and the demonic patterns on his face flowed with a dark red color. With a wave of his hand, the many demon soldiers below vanished, turning back into demonic energy that was sucked entirely into his body.
Lu Xi stood once more in the sky. She lightly touched her brow with a finger, leaving a trace of fresh blood on her fingertip. Closing her eyes and joining her hands, she chanted a long incantation. The surrounding spatial array shifted violently, the vortex spinning faster and consuming the demonic energy. Only the Demon Sovereign remained, attempting a desperate strike against the vortex.
The power of the Ancient True God was vast, radiating from Lu Xi and transforming into vitality. She drew down the thunder and lightning of the Heavenly Dao, and the power laced with the Goddess’s aura instantly broke through the Demon Sovereign’s defense and neutralized his move.
This was not the end. Before Lu Xi finished her incantation, as her low divine voice transformed into waves of spring breeze blowing across the land, Zhi Wu discovered with horror that her contract with Xi Ning had been severed. Before it was cut, she realized what Xi Ning intended to do.
“If you do this… you will completely dissipate!” Zhi Wu let out a final cry toward the Ancient True God shrouded in golden light. She watched as her partner of hundreds of thousands of years used her soul as a guide to condense a stronger array. Finally, using her dissipating essence blood, she created a rain of divine power that fell upon the destroyed land, restoring life to the nourished soil.
In the end, the body of the Ancient True God shattered into billions of points of starlight, striking the Demon Sovereign as he was pulled into the vortex and sealing the array firmly once more. A golden light flashed, and the spatial vortex shrank to a single point of cold light, slowly falling toward the repaired cliff bottom. Familiar divine power then bloomed into a white mist, suppressing it completely.
Everything returned to nothingness.
Zhi Wu stared dazed at the mountaintop that had regained its vitality, and then at the golden light shimmering eternally beneath the mist at the bottom of the cliff. She called out softly, “Xi Ning?”
But no one responded to her. Falling to the ground, she looked at the bodies of her kin and fellow immortals, realizing that what she had just experienced was not a dream. So, the master she had guarded for hundreds of thousands of years—True God Xi Ning—had truly returned to nothingness? To ensure she was not affected, Xi Ning had even severed their contract before her self-destruction.
“So… so your ‘way’ to reseal the Demon Sovereign… was this?” Zhi Wu’s eyes were red as she looked unwillingly at the white mist at the bottom of the cliff. It was a very familiar aura, for it was all formed from Xi Ning’s essence blood.
Her heart was filled with grief. The contract was gone, her partner was gone; her heart felt as if a hole had been carved out of it that could never heal.
The sky gradually brightened as the fiery morning sun rose, marking the start of a new day. Those in the Eight Desolations who had slept well through the night would never know what had transpired in the Northern Wilderness.
Warm sunlight filtered through the window, falling on the swaying gauze curtains. The chirping of birds sounded, waking the girl on the bed. Slowly opening her eyes, Fu Lancen instinctively leaned toward the side of the bed, trying to embrace Lu Xi and nuzzle into her arms. However, her arm hit the empty bedsheets. She turned her head in surprise to find that the woman she shared a bed with had vanished.
“Xixi?” she called out. No one responded.
“Xixi sister? Where are you?” She sat up and parted the hanging curtains. There was still no sign of Lu Xi.
This gave her a faint sense of unease. In the past, when Lu Xi rose first, she would appear by her side the moment she sensed the girl was awake, no matter where she was in the palace. Why was she nowhere to be found today? Had she gone to the Northern Wilderness again?
Fu Lancen’s mind raced, and her sense of unease grew stronger. She dressed and walked outside. She searched the courtyard, ran to the kitchen, and checked the back mountain. Unfortunately, she searched the entire Boyun Palace and could not find Lu Xi. Even the guards and maidservants did not know where she had gone.
Unable to find her in the palace, she stepped out and went to every corner of the Heavenly Realm, asking countless people, but the answer was always the same: no one had seen True God Xi Ning.
Fu Lancen decided to check the Northern Wilderness. Before she could leave the Heavenly Realm, she caught sight of Lord Zhi Wu. Thinking that Zhi Wu had been sent there by Lu Xi and might know her whereabouts, she ran toward her.
As she reached her, she saw Zhi Wu’s battered state and the horrific scars that remained despite being treated. Her heart tightened. “Lord Zhi Wu? Why are you injured?”
Zhi Wu had dragged her injured body back to the Heavenly Realm specifically to inform Fu Lancen. But standing before her and seeing the innocent look on her face, she suddenly didn’t know how to tell her about the events of the previous night. She smiled bitterly in her heart; if Xi Ning could hide it from her, she could certainly hide it from Fu Lancen. In the end, it was up to her to announce Xi Ning’s demise. Xi Ning was truly cruel.
“Lady Cen.” Zhi Wu was no longer as flippant as usual. She bowed respectfully to Fu Lancen.
The little fox hurriedly dodged the bow in fright. Although she was married to Lu Xi, she never used that status to act important; she was not used to an Ancient Divine Dragon like Zhi Wu bowing so formally to her. “Lord Zhi Wu, what is the matter? Why are you being so formal with a junior?”
Though the sun was bright and the immortal energy was ethereal, Fu Lancen’s limbs felt icy cold, as if she were slowly falling into a frozen land. Unease and tension left her frozen in place, her heart feeling empty, as if something had slipped through her fingers without leaving a trace.
“Last night, the sealing array shattered, and the Demon Sovereign emerged.” Zhi Wu did not dare look up, her voice raspy and full of remorse. “True God Xi Ning sacrificed herself to save the world. She, her soul has been completely extinguished.”
