Chapter 29: Love at First Sight — If you like someone, take the initiative…
April 17th, Afternoon. Cherry Building, Grand Conference Room.
After returning that day, Lu Shuyu notified the entire staff and the guest group, while Min Wutong coordinated with investors and Cherry’s internal senior management to facilitate this internal screening.
Once everyone arrived, Min Wutong took the lead with a brief opening. Lu Shuyu didn’t waste words and went straight to the point.
For this screening, they had prepared three segments: the pilot episode and the first episode (Parts A and B).
The total duration was two and a half hours.
To be honest, although Lu Shuyu was confident in the content, she had worried that such a long session would make people restless and cause the screening to fall flat. But the effect was unexpectedly good.
“Ah—” Qian Rong cried out as the screen went black. “That’s it? It’s over?”
She wasn’t the only one; many in the room wore the same expression of wanting more.
“Yeah, exactly.” Xiang Wan, who had missed the last dinner, was present today and asked excitedly, “Where’s the extended cut?”
Lu Shuyu gave a gentle smile and turned off the projector. Chi Shan immediately flicked the lights back on, brightening the conference room once more.
“Once it officially broadcasts, President Xiang will be able to see it,” Lu Shuyu said.
Xiang Wan wasn’t satisfied and glanced at Min Wutong, who let out a light cough and pretended not to see.
“Thank you all for coming today.”
Lu Shuyu turned on the microphone at the podium. her crisp voice echoed clearly through the large room.
“I presume everyone has heard the happy news regarding PD Song Yi. To welcome her new life, she has chosen to step away temporarily.”
“Therefore, for the upcoming period, I will be leading the Gold team forward.”
“Organizing this screening with President Min today was both to demonstrate our team’s strength and to give everyone a ‘tranquilizer’ for their worries.”
“If you are willing to continue trusting me, I will be very grateful and will work even harder to do my absolute best.”
At this point, one of the company’s senior executives seemed ready to speak. Min Wutong shot a glance to her side, and Shen Jun nodded slightly, speaking up softly: “And what if we don’t trust you?”
“After all, PD Song was at the helm for the first episode in L-City. To showcase PD Lu’s individual ability, these clips alone don’t seem enough to prove it.”
When an investor takes the lead in questioning, the internal executives find it harder to speak. They could only shift their direction, saying with a fake smile, “President Shen, PD Lu is PD Song’s student. Having followed her for so long, she has surely learned at least half of her skills.”
This blatant “praise followed by a slight” made Min Wutong sneer internally, but now wasn’t the time for internal strife.
On the podium, Lu Shuyu smiled calmly, showing no signs of nerves. She gestured with her hand, and Chi Shan and Chen Qian brought out two stacks of documents to distribute to everyone.
“That is why I have prepared the filming plan for the next stop: F-City. This is the other ‘tranquilizer’ for everyone.”
The plan was so detailed—from the workflow to the budget, and even storyboards for envisioned scenes—that the fusion of text and imagery left the executives in awe, making it difficult to find any further grounds for rebuttal.
“A seaside fireworks festival?” Qian Rong was surprised. “I remember in the initial proposal, F-City didn’t have this segment?”
Lu Shuyu nodded and explained, “While preparing over the last two days, I happened to see a summer fireworks announcement released by a small island in F-City.”
During the initial planning, L-City and T-City were both inland. For the third and final stop, they wanted to leap away from the mainland. Among several coastal cities, they chose F-City—a place that wasn’t too far but wasn’t a top-tier popular tourist destination either.
While urgently refining the plan, Lu Shuyu recalled the popular and niche islands she had researched during scouting. After searching, she noticed a quiet spot called Zhang Island. Coincidentally, this was He Wenyin’s hometown.
Lu Shuyu clicked the mouse to display a video of a sea fireworks demonstration released by Zhang Island last week. Sparks bloomed in the air, falling like a galaxy into the mortal world—dreamlike and grand. It wasn’t hard to imagine how romantic it would be on a summer night.
The guests in the audience turned to look at He Wenyin. The latter looked shocked and confused, shaking her head to indicate she was hearing about this for the first time.
“F-City is the finale for Gold. When the last episode airs, it will be early June.”
“Fireworks are a traditional entertainment in our country and a long-standing cultural symbol. If we conclude with this grand maritime fireworks display, it will be a perfect ending for the show.”
Shen Jun finished reading the last page and asked before the executives could: “Have you contacted Zhang Island?”
Lu Shuyu nodded. “I contacted them immediately. Fortunately, they are hospitable and warm, and they are somewhat familiar with our company—”
She paused and looked at He Wenyin with a smile. “Also, thanks to Teacher He’s reputation, the cooperation was facilitated very smoothly.”
“Both sides openly discussed the pros and cons, and the contract has already been signed.”
“So fast?” The executive who was dissatisfied with her almost jumped out of his seat.
Lu Shuyu smiled and said modestly, “I was just lucky and benefited from everyone’s influence, and especially from President Min’s incredible execution power.”
Though she spoke modestly, everyone knew that for a project to succeed, it requires strength, luck, and connections. Lu Shuyu possessed all three, and no one questioned her further.
“Very good,” Shen Jun nodded with a smile. “I believe in PD Lu.”
“Yes, PD Lu is ready to strike out on her own,” Xiang Wan added. “The student has truly surpassed the master.”
The smile on Lu Shuyu’s face faded slightly as she said softly, “It’s because PD Song taught me well. She will always be my teacher.”
Her voice was light but firm, making everyone feel the depth of the teacher-student bond.
…
After the meeting, the atmosphere among the crew and guests was light.
“Not bad, PD Lu,” Chi Shan punched Lu Shuyu’s shoulder lightly. “You performed so well today!”
The distribution lead, Liao Min, hadn’t left either, giving a thumbs up. “PD Lu is the best!”
Faced with their praise, Lu Shuyu chuckled. “Could you guys really not tell I was nervous?”
“Couldn’t tell at all,” they said in unison.
“Alright then,” she shrugged. “Actually, I was quite excited~”
In the past, Song Yi would always take the stage. This time, Lu Shuyu had gone in with a “do or die” mentality. But once she was up there, she found that instead of nerves, she felt the thrill of being in control.
Seeing the guest group hadn’t left, Lu Shuyu smiled and said, “Teachers, you can head out now~”
For some reason, He Wenyin and Luo Han looked hesitant, as if they had something to say but couldn’t find the words. Xia Leshuang, however, was direct: “PD Lu, when are you going to F-City?”
“Leaving tomorrow,” Lu Shuyu replied. “You teachers only need to arrive in two days.”
“Then why don’t we,” Xia Leshuang looked at the others beside her, “all go together?”
The suggestion was sudden, catching everyone by surprise. Zhong Wen and Jiang Fei looked at each other with excitement.
Lu Shuyu raised an eyebrow. “Teacher Xia, isn’t it better to rest for two more days?”
He Wenyin spoke up: “I want to go too. F-City is my home, and Zhang Island is my old family home. Maybe I can help.”
“Same for me,” Luo Han added with a smile. “I haven’t been back in a long time. I actually stayed on Zhang Island for a while years ago; I miss it.”
Hearing this, He Wenyin gave her a surprised look but kept her questions to herself.
With both of them saying so, Lu Shuyu stopped trying to persuade them. She couldn’t help but glance at the person beside her with a half-smile. Xia Leshuang was momentarily dazed by that gaze, but Lu Shuyu quickly looked toward the other three.
“Then you teachers can decide for yourselves. You can come with us tomorrow or stick to the plan. If you decide to go tomorrow, let us know by 7:00 PM tonight so we can book the tickets.”
…
Leaving the conference room, Xia Leshuang thought about Lu Shuyu’s glance. If she wasn’t mistaken, it seemed to carry a hint of… anger?
Suddenly, someone tapped her from behind. Xia Leshuang instinctively grabbed the person’s hand, causing them to cry out, “Ouch! Pain!”
Xia Leshuang immediately let go. “I’m sorry! I was spacing out, it was a reflex…”
“Goodness,” Tang Jiahe rubbed her wrist. “You really are strong…”
“Do you need to go to the hospital?” Xia Leshuang hadn’t used much force, but she wasn’t sure how much Tang Jiahe could take.
“I’m not that fragile.” Tang Jiahe glanced at Zhong Wen, who was walking behind them sending messages. She whispered, “If it were Little Zhong, it might be a different story.”
She said it softly enough that Zhong Wen didn’t hear. Xia Leshuang smiled and asked, “By the way, did you have something to tell me?”
Tang Jiahe leaned in and asked quietly, “Leshuang, do you like PD Lu?”
…?!
Xia Leshuang’s brain stalled. Her lips parted, but she couldn’t say a word for a long time. Fortunately, Zhong Wen overheard and rushed up to rescue her. “Jiahe, what are you doing? You can’t ship a CP right in front of the person involved! You can’t say things like that.”
Tang Jiahe didn’t expose the fact that Zhong Wen did exactly that all the time. She just smiled and said softly, “Anyway, according to my insider info, President Min seems to be in a relationship—and it’s not with PD Lu.”
She patted Xia Leshuang’s shoulder. “So, Leshuang. If you like her, take the initiative.”
“Only by taking the initiative can there be a story.”
She walked away, leaving Xia Leshuang stunned. Zhong Wen let out a suppressed roar: “President Min is a playgirl? PD Lu is in a one-sided love?!”
But compared to those rumors, Xia Leshuang’s thoughts were forced to linger on that word: Initiative.
Take the initiative?
Bitter memories surfaced. She had taken the initiative once. But she had received no response at all.
