Chapter 61: The Best Fate for a Flirtatious Female Ghost
Su Huaiwang was fleeing desperately in the world of mist.
Grayish-white wispy matter floated in the air, sometimes kissing her cheek, sometimes falling at her feet, spontaneously combusting without wind, turning into ash.
A dull ache pulsed in her temple, like a hangover from lack of sleep.
There was no one.
Whether behind the supermarket counter, in front of the instant noodle hot water dispenser, or in the restroom, not a single person was visible, only ashes.
It was as if this world had been consumed by a massive fire, swallowing all traces of people.
No matter how much Su Huaiwang tried to convince herself otherwise, it was useless.
This place was abnormal, and Lin Jue was also abnormal.
Her lungs burned. Her steps were as heavy as if they were filled with lead. Su Huaiwang almost felt there was some toxic substance in the air, causing her to hallucinate.
The elongated shadow once again fell at her feet. The girl was backlit, so Su Huaiwang couldn’t see her beautiful face, only hear her voice:
“Where are you going?”
The voice entered her ears as if many Lin Jues were speaking, overlapping, assaulting her nerves.
Su Huaiwang panted heavily, took a step back, turned, and ran without hesitation.
The monster that looked like her lover was very patient, standing still and unmoving.
It had been this way many times before.
But Su Huaiwang would always see her again at the next corner.
Each time, the words were the same.
“Where are you going?”
“Please stop running, okay?”
Whipping away the last shred of trust left in Su Huaiwang’s heart.
That wasn’t Lin Jue.
That was just a monster simulating her appearance.
Su Huaiwang ran, and the mist considerately moved out of her way.
Burning with anxiety, she mentally recited the string of numbers Lei Yinyin had given her for the nth time.
Rounding a corner, the figure appeared again, bringing with it an inexplicable, unspeakable sadness.
Fear, along with trust, had faded. Su Huaiwang already had a vague feeling that the other party wouldn’t harm her.
She scoffed and prepared to change direction again.
But this time, the monster’s words were different:
“It’s no use.”
Su Huaiwang instinctively stopped.
“My little world isn’t something they can break into. Even if you keep contacting them, it won’t do any good. They can’t even receive the message.”
The woman turned her head, sweat running down her temples:
“…What do you mean?”
The monster still stood woodenly in place, only her head lowered slightly, looking apologetic. In this moment, she did resemble Lin Jue a bit.
“If I don’t agree, no one can get you out of this place.”
Su Huaiwang looked at her:
“So you locked me here?”
The monster raised her head and took a step forward.
Su Huaiwang instinctively took a step back in sync with her movement.
The monster saw this action, froze in place, and retracted the foot she had extended.
She looked lifeless and dejected. Su Huaiwang even felt a little sorry for her, as if she had done something wrong to the monster.
“I didn’t…” The wraith considered her words: “I don’t have any intention of locking you in now.”
Under the current circumstances, Su Huaiwang actually calmed down: “Then what exactly do you want to do?”
She also didn’t know what the situation was outside. Was her body dragged in, or just her consciousness? How worried Lin Jue and the three pets must be if they noticed anything unusual about her.
Hearing her undisguised words, the wraith lowered her head sadly again. Su Huaiwang suspected she was about to cry.
The thought flashed through her mind. Worrying that a monster might cry? That thought was too strange.
It must be because this monster is wearing Lin Jue’s skin that she feels soft-hearted.
“I just wanted to talk to you alone. Didn’t you ask me to be honest with you? I just wanted you to see what the real me is like. Now that you’ve seen it, do you hate me?”
The more Su Huaiwang listened, the less she understood. She furrowed her eyebrows: “What? What are you talking about? When did I…”
She stopped mid-sentence, realizing a possibility she didn’t want to admit.
Su Huaiwang closed her mouth, silent. After a long time, she finally spoke:
“…Who are you?”
“Lin Jue.”
The other party admitted it without hesitation. The hazy mist flowed across her face, revealing a bit of pale outline.
Lin Jue’s face, Lin Jue’s eyes, Lin Jue’s expression.
“We met a year ago. You just don’t remember.”
With this extremely obvious clue, it was impossible for Su Huaiwang not to recall the source of everything that had happened recently:
“Nanguan Village?”
“It should be Beiguan Village.” Lin Jue smiled. Her bloodless lips curved into a faint arc, the unnerving feeling of a non-living being. Yet, her eyes carefully clung to Su Huaiwang from top to bottom, exactly like her usual nervous expression when she suspected she had done something wrong.
The contradiction between unfamiliarity and familiarity in Lin Jue gave Su Huaiwang a sense of unreality.
She even started to suspect this was just a nightmare.
“Beiguan Village…” She lowered her gaze and whispered: “I see. Lei Yinyin accidentally mentioned before that I went to Beiguan Village… So I took the wrong path? And that’s why…”
Lin Jue was right in front of her. Su Huaiwang couldn’t bring herself to say the words “got stuck with something dirty.”
The words rolled around in her throat several times, and what finally emerged was much friendlier than the original form: “…That’s why I met you. What exactly are you… creature?”
Su Huaiwang’s gaze toward Lin Jue was conflicted and complicated.
But Lin Jue didn’t mind these small details.
She was already very happy that Su Huaiwang was willing to talk to her.
Black, charcoal-like spots appeared on the wraith’s hands, which she then pressed out with her fingers, extinguishing the true form of the ghost that appeared due to over-excitement.
“I am a ghost.”
The woman, whose eyes were uncontrollably glued to the other person’s hands, abruptly looked up.
“Strictly speaking, I’m a wraith, a ghost born from resentment.” The other party’s eyes were clear, as if talking about something completely unrelated to herself: “Since a long time ago, Beiguan Village had customs of infanticide and human trafficking. Most of the women in the village were trafficked. These resentments gathered together and became me.
“The expression in Su Huaiwang’s eyes changed.
Lin Jue had never felt this way when recalling the content of her nightmare. Her chest felt full, not with pain or hatred, but with other emotions, born because of Su Huaiwang.
Even if it was just a little bit, Su Huaiwang was feeling sorry for her.
“‘Lin Jue’ was the last victim and the largest source of my consciousness. As a collection of resentments, I have the memories of all the vengeful spirits in my body, but they are all fragmented pieces. Only her memories are the clearest and most numerous.
“She was kidnapped while traveling. Before that, she was a student at the Capital Fine Arts Academy, with loving parents, a bright future, and a life of comfort.
“During the decades of terrifying dreams in Beiguan Village, Lin Jue always liked to rewatch these lives over and over.
“The vengeful spirit only left her a little bit, but it was always the sweetest part.
“She refused to be trapped in Beiguan Village, repeatedly resisting and trying to escape, but was caught and beaten every time until the very last time. She successfully escaped into the mountains. Just before she was caught, a mountain fire broke out.
“She and the villagers chasing her died in that mountain fire, but the others were still alive.
“Her hatred was the fuse, and so I was born with that mountain fire.
“I am ‘Lin Jue,’ but I am also not ‘Lin Jue.’ In addition to ‘Lin Jue,’ I also incorporated the resentment of many other people, but I still chose to become ‘Lin Jue.'”
The wraith’s eyes were sincere: “Now, regarding the question of who I am, I have fully confessed to you. There was a reason for not telling you this. Can you forgive me?”
Su Huaiwang was still standing there, processing the immense amount of information.
She now felt more and more that she wished this were just a nightmare, but could a dream’s setting be this complete?
After a long time, she finally looked up at Lin Jue.
The other person, however, had been looking at her for an unknown length of time, her eyes hazy with moisture, her beautiful eyebrows slightly furrowed, looking fragile.
Su Huaiwang opened her mouth, unable to speak, her gaze shifting away first.
Lin Jue noticed her hesitation and took a step forward: “Can I hug you?”
Su Huaiwang was flustered, standing rooted to the spot, unsure whether to move forward or retreat.
Until Lin Jue walked up to her, wrapped her arms around her waist, and rested her cold head against Su Huaiwang’s chest.
The wraith let out a long sigh.
The skin under Su Huaiwang’s ear stiffened from the contact, but her heart was beating honestly, as if trying to bring the wraith back to life with her.
Tucked into Su Huaiwang’s arms, she began to softly complain in a wronged voice: “Actually, before I met you, I had nightmares every day—just staying in this place alone, repeatedly reliving that mountain fire and those tormented memories.” And the scenes of tormenting and killing the perpetrators, but Lin Jue didn’t want to mention that part.
Su Huaiwang moved a little. Lin Jue, fearing she would push her away, held her even tighter.
Unexpectedly, Su Huaiwang only raised her hand, resting it on the back of Lin Jue’s head, stroking her gently in comfort.
Lin Jue widened her eyes. The tears that had been held back unexpectedly fell, uncontrollable for some reason.
She quickly evaporated them, not letting them stain Su Huaiwang’s clothes.
“And then?” Su Huaiwang rested her head lightly on Lin Jue.
Perhaps because she was back in her own little world, Lin Jue’s body was much colder, more like a corpse, chilling her teeth a little.
Her gaze shifted down, seeing the sparks and scorch marks that constantly appeared and disappeared on Lin Jue’s body, sometimes on her dress, sometimes on her skin.
Su Huaiwang frowned and sighed.
“Then I met you!” Lin Jue didn’t notice where she was looking, her tone suddenly cheerful.
“A year ago, in Beiguan Village?”
“Nanguan Village.” Lin Jue smiled, rubbing against the woman’s soft chest: “Nanguan Village is also part of my territory, but I didn’t pay much attention to them. They wanted to seize you as a scapegoat to escape my terrifying dreams. When I found out, I brought you to Beiguan Village.”
“So I should thank you?”
Lin Jue didn’t speak, a guilty look on her face.
Su Huaiwang immediately sensed something was wrong and pressed: “What exactly happened a year ago? Why did I lose my memory? What did you do to me?”
Lin Jue raised her head, her amber eyes meeting hers.
“Do you really want to know?”
Su Huaiwang was puzzled: “Losing one’s memory for no reason, wouldn’t anyone want to get it back?”
Lin Jue hesitated: “But what if… after you know, you hate me?”
“At this point, are you still worried about that? If I were that kind of person, shouldn’t I have pushed you away the moment you said you were a ghost?” Su Huaiwang was suspicious: “Did you do something bad to me?”
Her mind instantly flashed through many x-rated novels and comics she had read about people being manipulated by non-humans.
The woman’s fair face flushed instantly. Her gaze drifted.
Lin Jue didn’t know what she was thinking. She was genuinely worried that Su Huaiwang would hate her for it, but she couldn’t go against Su Huaiwang’s wishes.
Looking pitiful and reluctant, the girl stammered.
