She Comes Into My Dreams Every Night - Chapter 49
Chapter 49: Victory Belongs to the Bold
Compared to the last time they met, Lei Yinyin was clearly much more disheveled this time.
She was still spirited, but both her hands were injured and wrapped in large bandages, which looked somewhat alarming. Her skin was also a bit chapped, and dark circles under her eyes suggested she hadn’t slept well in a long time.
Su Huaiwang’s expression instinctively showed concern: “…Ms. Lei?”
Lei Yinyin seemed to realize how miserable she looked and awkwardly tried to scratch her head—only to remember halfway that she couldn’t use her fingers right now.
“It’s me. Uh, Ms. Su, aren’t you going to ask why I’m here?”
Su Huaiwang played along. “Alright, then why are you here? Is it time for another follow-up visit?”
“No.” Lei Yinyin flashed a grin at her, quietly glancing at the silent Lin Jue nearby. “Actually, I’m going to be living here starting today.”
With that, she raised her heavily bandaged hands in a greeting, directed at both Su Huaiwang and Lin Jue. “Hello, new neighbors.”
Before Su Huaiwang could speak, Lin Jue interjected:
“She’s been moving her luggage since the day you left.”
The girl’s voice carried a hint of coldness, like a shard of ice during the transition from autumn to winter.
Su Huaiwang subconsciously frowned.
Was this abandoned resort village some kind of great place? Why were they all flocking here?
But if she truly intended to move in… there was nothing Su Huaiwang could do, except that her peaceful life would probably…
Lost in thought, Su Huaiwang completely failed to notice that her feelings about Lei Yinyin moving in were entirely different from when she saw Lin Jue move in.
She scrutinized Lei Yinyin, pausing before speaking. “…It’s quite far from the hospital here.”
The smile on Lei Yinyin’s face froze for a second. If she hadn’t recognized the good intention behind Su Huaiwang’s words, she would have almost thought Lin Jue forced Su Huaiwang to say that.
“It’s fine… no big deal… it’ll heal quickly.”
She managed a forced smile, suppressing the resentment she felt toward the true culprit.
Lin Jue stood by, arms crossed, watching her performance with leisure.
“It’s no good standing out here. Let’s take the luggage inside first.”
She suddenly spoke.
Su Huaiwang came to a realization and turned to Lei Yinyin. “Well, we’ll take our leave then. Wishing you a smooth move. Feel free to stop by my place sometime.”
Lei Yinyin laughed heartily. “Of course, I will.”
Su Huaiwang walked off dragging her suitcase, and Lin Jue followed behind with the other luggage, not forgetting to shoot Lei Yinyin a look of provocative hostility over her shoulder.
The smile on Lei Yinyin’s face had vanished the moment Su Huaiwang turned around. Now, facing Lin Jue, all that was left was the fury of gnashing teeth.
This ghost!
…
Closing the door, Su Huaiwang tried to peek outside through the window.
Her expression was worried. “Is Ms. Lei going to be okay? How can she move things when she’s injured?”
“She has a moving company.”
“Moving companies can’t do the more meticulous work, can they?”
“It’s fine. Her family is rich; they can afford people to do the meticulous work.”
Su Huaiwang averted her gaze from the window, still half-believing. “Are you very familiar with her?”
Lin Jue paused her actions. “Not very familiar. We just talked for a couple of minutes before you came back. She told me all this herself.”
Su Huaiwang didn’t say anything, only turning her head to look out the window.
Lei Yinyin had left long ago. Now, there was no one outside the window, only the setting sun and the shadows of the rustling trees.
A unique fragrance approached, claiming its territory.
“Are you in a bad mood?” Lin Jue’s cautious question sounded near her ear.
She always seemed so perceptive, noticing the slightest hint of negative emotion in her. Su Huaiwang really wanted to know what kind of family she grew up in to acquire such cautious sensitivity.
“No, maybe I’m just a little tired.” Su Huaiwang shook the thoughts out of her head, relaxing her expression as much as possible.
Unexpectedly, Lin Jue didn’t take the hint. She looked intently at her, certain. “You’re lying.
“Are you upset because you think I’m getting too close to her?
“Are you jealous?”
The amber eyes moved closer and closer to her, shimmering in the residual light of the evening glow.
Su Huaiwang had to push her face away.
“No.”
Maybe a little, but the word Lin Jue used was too harsh.
Perhaps it wasn’t jealousy, just a bit of possessiveness.
It was perfectly normal to feel possessive of a friend.
When Tu Zhizhuo was little, she would cry if Su Huaiwang even went to the restroom with someone else.
Despite having her face pushed away, Lin Jue still smiled. “You don’t need to worry. I like you the most. You are the most important.”
Such a solemn promise was not difficult for her to say.
But for the listener, it was difficult to deal with.
Su Huaiwang’s heart gave a sudden leap. Fortunately, the rapidly descending darkness concealed the flush on her face.
She felt a hint of exasperated shyness. She complained, “Don’t just say whatever comes to mind…”
Since that night, the relationship between them seemed to have changed, and yet it hadn’t.
A mere kiss on the corner of the lips was not enough to transform a friendship, but it was enough to make the sense of distance between them even stranger.
Lin Jue looked at her without blinking and suddenly asked, “Can I kiss you?”
Su Huaiwang trembled, flustered. “It’s still daytime!”
“So it’s okay if it’s not daytime?”
“That’s not what I meant! It’s… it’s…” It needs to be when she’s managed to persuade herself to be rational.
Being rejected, Lin Jue didn’t hide the disappointment on her face.
She pouted. “Okay then. Let me know when you want one.” She would never refuse Su Huaiwang.
Her eyelashes fluttered. Su Huaiwang was still weakly arguing, “I said that’s not what I meant…”
“Then what did you mean?” Lin Jue frowned slightly, tilting her head, looking very confused.
Su Huaiwang couldn’t exactly explain her complex and tangled feelings, so she decided to just give in. “Fine, you can kiss me, alright? But after today, you can’t bring it up again for the next few days.”
Lin Jue’s eyes curved into crescents. She knew when to stop. “Okay.”
Su Huaiwang instantly regretted it. She should have deleted the “few days” she had just mentioned.
Her eyelashes fluttered. She took a deep breath and slowly leaned toward Lin Jue’s face, planting a kiss on it.
“…Satisfied?”
The soft contact was fleeting. Lin Jue reluctantly replied, “Mhm.”
Only then did Su Huaiwang exhale the breath she had been holding.
“But why didn’t you kiss a little further down?”
“!”
…
The doorbell rang.
Su Huaiwang got up to open the door.
Standing outside was the person she had seen not long ago.
Lei Yinyin.
The woman smiled and greeted her, looking like a testament to perseverance despite physical disability.
Su Huaiwang welcomed her new neighbor inside.
The first thing the new neighbor did after entering the house wasn’t to sit on the sofa, but to look around. “Is Lin Jue not here?”
Su Huaiwang answered honestly, “She went back to do something and will be back shortly.”
Lei Yinyin noticeably relaxed.
Su Huaiwang took the opportunity to ask, “Are you moving here because of my problem?”
Lei Yinyin turned and saw the worried look on Su Huaiwang’s face.
Lei Yinyin, who had originally intended to subtly probe her, immediately swallowed her planned answer. “…No.”
The woman hummed in response, though Lei Yinyin couldn’t tell if she believed her or not.
She then pointed to the other person’s arms, which were wrapped like clubs. “How did you get these injuries?”
A vein pulsed on Lei Yinyin’s forehead. “Car accident.”
Another car accident?
Su Huaiwang felt a rising sense of suspicion.
“Hey, let’s not talk about such unlucky things. How is Tu Zhizhuo?”
“You know Tu Zhizhuo?”
“I’m a fan, I guess. I’ve been to her concerts. Heard she was in a car accident too. Just asking out of concern.” Lei Yinyin heavily emphasized the words “car accident.”
Su Huaiwang didn’t doubt her. It wasn’t strange for a police officer to know her social network.
“Mhm, her injuries aren’t serious. It’s completely fine if you still want to hear her play the piano.”
Su Huaiwang chose her words carefully, but her gaze couldn’t help but drift to Lei Yinyin’s hands.
Lei Yinyin: …
She suddenly felt exhausted.
“Well, I’ve paid my visit, so I’ll… head back now. Be careful, and if you need anything, you can come find me up there.”
Lei Yinyin pointed outside the window.
The villa she was staying in was at a higher elevation than Su Huaiwang and Lin Jue’s, making it visually “up there.”
“Mhm. If you have any inconveniences, you can also come find us.”
Su Huaiwang glanced at her bandages again.
Lei Yinyin completely gave up on talking, her lips pressed into a tight line.
Su Huaiwang saw her to the door. Just as she was about to open it, the door was suddenly pushed open from the outside.
Lin Jue, her arms full, raised an eyebrow at Lei Yinyin. “A rare guest.”
For some reason, Su Huaiwang felt a mocking, provocative tone in her words.
With the owner present, the two dogs and one cat ignored the stranger who smelled good and whined, rushing into their owner’s arms.
Su Huaiwang immediately knelt down, hugging the three pets to comfort them.
Lin Jue and Lei Yinyin were left standing opposite each other.
Lei Yinyin’s eyebrows were practically standing on end.
She glanced at the vegetables in Lin Jue’s arms and instantly realized what Su Huaiwang meant by having “something to do.”
She sneered. “Quite the mood you’re in.”
Lin Jue lifted her chin slightly. “Indeed.”
Lei Yinyin felt like she was punching cotton. She wasn’t in a rush anymore. “Are you cooking?”
“I am.”
“Not afraid of anything going wrong with the food?”
“Heh, why don’t you try it and see?”
Lei Yinyin was waiting for those words. She immediately turned and called out to Su Huaiwang, “Ms. Su! She said she wants to invite me for dinner!”
Lin Jue: ?
Su Huaiwang barely managed to look up from the licking of the three pets, and her eyes immediately met the girl’s furious expression.
?
What was wrong with Lin Jue? So angry? She looked perfectly fine when she left just now.
Noticing Su Huaiwang’s gaze, Lin Jue reluctantly reined in her expression. “Did I say that?”
Lei Yinyin wasn’t afraid of being shameless and shouted, “Of course you did! You just asked me if I wanted to try your cooking! Ms. Su, you heard her too, right!”
Su Huaiwang’s gaze shifted back to Lin Jue.
Lin Jue was truly using her innate power to manage her expression now. She was terrified she would lose control and beat up this Celestial Master.
“…This is Su Huaiwang’s house.” Meaning, her invitation didn’t count.
To her surprise, Su Huaiwang readily agreed. “Dinner together? Sure, why not.”
Lin Jue looked at Su Huaiwang in disbelief.
Su Huaiwang, however, seemed oblivious, even blinking at her.
“Then Lin Jue and I can cook together. That way, you can taste both of our cooking.”
This round was a victory for Lei Yinyin. She abandoned all pretense and raised her plaster-like hands. “Hooray!”
