She Comes Into My Dreams Every Night - Chapter 47
Chapter 47: Stubborn Mule
Tu Zhizhuo was sprawled out on the bed, drifting in and out of consciousness.
Lei Yinyin had been gone for a long time and had taken her phone, so she had nothing better to do than force herself to sleep.
But the more she tried to force it, the clearer the reality became in her mind.
What business could Lei Yinyin have to deal with? Su Huaiwang’s matter, obviously, otherwise she wouldn’t have even confiscated her phone.
A knock came at the door. Tu Zhizhuo weakly called out, “Come in.”
An unfamiliar woman walked in. “Still awake?”
She looked around forty years old, well-maintained, with only fine lines around the corners of her eyes. Even with a smile, she gave off an intimidating aura of authority.
Tu Zhizhuo didn’t reply. The woman’s tone was one of slightly overfamiliar affection.
The woman didn’t mind. “It’s good that you’re awake.” As she spoke, she placed the person she was carrying over her shoulder onto the other bed.
Tu Zhizhuo immediately sat up in bed, crying out in alarm, “What happened to her?!”
Lei Yinyin was lying on her back, her face contorted in pain, her hair disheveled, and both hands wrapped in thick bandages.
The woman, however, seemed unconcerned. “Nothing much. Just minor injuries; she won’t die.” But she did express concern for Tu Zhizhuo’s injury. “Is your foot injury better? Moving around like this will affect your recovery, won’t it?”
Tu Zhizhuo nodded vaguely, her eyes still fixed on the unconscious Lei Yinyin. “I’m okay. It’s nothing compared to her.”
The woman chuckled. “She’s a Celestial Master. These injuries are really nothing to her.”
Tu Zhizhuo glanced at her, her eyes clearly showing surprise. “Your working environment is too harsh.”
“It’s alright. We have good benefits.” The woman walked over. “Hold out your hand.”
Tu Zhizhuo obediently extended her hand.
The woman gently grasped her hand, and white light shimmered from her own. The familiar warmth penetrated the small pinprick wounds on Tu Zhizhuo’s hand from the broken glass. It was gentler than what Lei Yinyin had done for her but far more effective.
“I knew she didn’t treat your hand,” the woman said with slight reproach. “This child is always in a rush and not careful enough.”
Tu Zhizhuo withdrew her hand, examining it curiously.
The skin on her hand was smooth and looked brand new, with no sign of previous injury.
“That’s amazing…” she muttered under her breath, then abruptly looked up. “Did something happen to Su Huaiwang? How is she?”
Lei Yinyin had returned in this state, so Su Huaiwang… She dared not imagine. The worry that had been suppressed by the woman’s powerful presence suddenly erupted.
She disregarded all courtesy and grabbed the hand the woman was resting near her. “Please tell me!”
The woman smiled at her and said, “That is not something you should worry about.”
“What—”
In the next moment, Tu Zhizhuo immediately collapsed, sinking into sleep.
Looking at the two younger people asleep in the room, Lei Zhengqing raised an eyebrow.
…
When Lei Yinyin woke up, it was close to dawn.
Faint light was beginning to appear outside the window. She braced herself against the throbbing pain and sat up in bed.
Tu Zhizhuo was sound asleep on the other bed in the room. Lei Yinyin knew she was back on the rear mountain.
She instinctively reached for the talisman at her waist. The talisman had vanished after being used.
She sighed, limped to the table, and poured herself a cup of tea.
The tea was already cold, but being parched, she didn’t mind.
After drinking the water, she finally noticed a piece of paper with an incantation tucked underneath the teacup in the dim light.
【When you wake up, come find me at the Main Hall】
The incantation flashed and immediately disappeared.
Sighing again, Lei Yinyin stood up.
Her injuries had been lightly treated but weren’t fully recovered. Both her hands were damaged, making it impossible to form hand seals. She had no choice but to obediently walk to the Main Hall.
It had been a long time since she had measured the height of the rear mountain step by step like this.
She gritted her teeth, and beads of sweat rolled down her cheeks.
A journey that normally took a few seconds with the Thousand Miles Evasion Technique was extended to several tens of minutes today.
But she wasn’t angry. She just thought this was perhaps punishment for her failed mission and nearly dying.
She just wondered how that wraith was dealt with later.
The thought of the wraith’s expression, never once taking her seriously, made her clench her jaw even tighter.
She finally arrived just as the morning sun was cresting the peak of the Main Hall.
Some early-rising disciples were already active and training. They weren’t surprised by her injuries but asked if she needed a ride.
Lei Yinyin politely declined all of them.
The heavy wooden doors of the Main Hall were pushed open. A few streaks of light shone in from the windows, barely providing enough light to see, but Lei Yinyin still couldn’t make out the expression of the person seated at the head of the hall.
“Sit.”
Her mother’s voice was calm, as always.
It was just the two of them, mother and daughter, but Lei Yinyin still sat upright and carefully, following proper etiquette.
Lei Zhengqing: …
“You don’t need to continue this mission,” Lei Zhengqing said first.
Lei Yinyin didn’t foolishly ask “Why” or similar questions. She simply replied calmly, “Understood.”
“Don’t you have anything you want to ask?”
“Has that wraith been dealt with?”
“No.”
“Is she the Heaven-Class Alpha wraith?”
“Yes.”
“Then when does the Ghost Suppression Bureau plan to deal with her?”
“We won’t.”
If Lei Yinyin could remain calm for the first two questions, she couldn’t help herself with the last one.
“Why?” Allowing a Heaven-Class Alpha wraith to run rampant outside? She never thought she would hear such a thing from the director of the Ghost Suppression Bureau, an organization dedicated to maintaining stability.
“I would rather ask you first, didn’t you learn in school? Wraiths cannot be annihilated.”
“Yes, but we can capture her, lock her up, and then find a way to help her achieve Buddhahood.”
There were facilities for this on this rear mountain. Although there were only a few wraiths housed there now, the Ghost Suppression Bureau indeed had such contingency plans.
“Easier said than done. Do you know how much it would cost us to capture a Heaven-Class Alpha wraith?”
Lei Zhengqing finally opened her eyes. Her eyes also held a lightning-like golden glow, allowing her to clearly see her daughter’s unwilling face in the dim light.
“If we really want to capture her, it would require heavy sacrifice not just from me, but from your grandmother, your teachers, and all the Celestial Masters you know by name. Is it worth paying all that just to capture a wraith who hasn’t harmed a single innocent person?”
It wasn’t worth it. Lei Yinyin knew, but she couldn’t accept it.
“But we can try our best, try to help her achieve Buddhahood. At least, at least not…”
“At least not sacrificing a person to keep her contained, right?”
As a mother, how could Lei Zhengqing not see what her straightforward daughter was thinking?
“You always think in such extremes when tackling problems. How can you unilaterally conclude that this is a sacrifice?”
Lei Yinyin sneered. “Deceiving the ignorant, implicating the innocent. The nature of a ghost cannot be changed.”
All ghosts are born of malice, representing hatred and resentment toward the world, especially wraiths.
Love is like a savings box. If no one deposits anything, nothing can be taken out. Ghosts are inherently incapable of understanding love; they only know hatred. She didn’t believe Su Huaiwang would be willing to live beside a ghost once she knew the full truth.
Lei Zhengqing sighed helplessly. “You seem to have a strong opinion of her. She let you go when you fell into her hands.”
Lei Yinyin frowned.
“If she truly intended to kill you, I wouldn’t have been able to stop her. In fact, I might have been an extra bonus, and we would have had a spectacular funeral together.”
Lei Yinyin: ?
Her face instantly darkened. “Is it that exaggerated?”
“You were born in a good era and haven’t encountered a Heaven-Class Alpha ghost, so you don’t know their true capability.”
Lei Yinyin wanted to angrily pull at her hair, but couldn’t because both hands were bandaged, making her even more frustrated.
“…How could she become Heaven-Class Alpha?” Lei Yinyin muttered in complaint, but it didn’t escape Lei Zhengqing’s ears:
“Oh right, her file is restricted to you, isn’t it?”
Lei Yinyin looked up, unsure of her mother’s meaning.
Lei Zhengqing remained composed. “She is an embodiment of resentment, born in the 1980s. Beings like her, who are a collective of resentment, are usually very powerful upon birth but often have highly unstable mental states, often showing a propensity to harm the innocent very early on. That is why all the similar entities we’ve annihilated before were relatively weaker evil spirits.
“But she is different. She is restrained and clear-headed. She has never harmed an innocent person unrelated to her resentment, which is why we failed to discover her until she reached the Heaven-Class Alpha rank.
“Su Huaiwang was the first innocent person she attempted to harm.”
Hearing Su Huaiwang’s name, Lei Yinyin excitedly stood up.
Lei Zhengqing glanced at her. “…But she still didn’t harm her in the end.
“In fact, the moment Su Huaiwang entered her nightmare world, we were immediately notified.
“But she was too formidable. She wouldn’t hand over the person even after half of her territory was destroyed. Since she hadn’t actually harmed her, and we have few methods to subdue a wraith, we were truly helpless. Su Huaiwang was trapped in her small world for a whole month. It was only when she gave up that we were able to rescue the person.
“The modification of Su Huaiwang’s memories was also done by her. We don’t know if it was because she didn’t want her matters exposed to us or for some other reason.”
“She modified them?!” Lei Yinyin couldn’t help but exclaim in shock. “This already constitutes…”
Lei Zhengqing gave her a silent, weary look, shutting down the rest of her sentence. “I’m not telling you all this for you to lament. I want you to consider for yourself how you should handle this matter.”
“…She clearly gave up on Su Huaiwang, so why is she seeking her out again now?”
“How would I know something like that? Why don’t you go ask her?” Lei Zhengqing raised an eyebrow with a hint of mischief.
“Me ask her?”
“Yes. She won’t kill you anyway. Since that’s the case, isn’t she the perfect sparring partner?” Lei Zhengqing curled her lips. “I’ve prepared another talisman for you.”
“Ah… thank you.” Lei Yinyin accepted the talisman, feeling that her mother’s words contained some hidden motive.
She shook her head, trying to dispel that feeling.
“Oh, right. Remember to send the one sleeping in the room away. I’ve already modified her memories.”
“Tu Zhizhuo? Understood.”
When discussing serious matters, the maternal feeling Lei Zhengqing possessed disappeared, leaving behind the authority of a superior. Lei Yinyin unconsciously straightened her posture.
“The only thing I’m dissatisfied with about this mission is that you implicated someone outside of this matter. Don’t do that again next time, understood?”
“Yes.”
Lei Yinyin replied.
“But I let her keep that number. If any issues arise again, remember to pay attention.”
“Yes.”
