Chapter 45: Wanting to Do and Being Able to Do Are Two Different Things
It was late at night.
Su Huaiwang still hadn’t fallen asleep.
For some reason, she felt unsettled tonight, as if something bad was about to happen.
After tossing and turning a few times, she finally got up, turned on the bedside lamp, and checked her phone.
The time read 23:04.
Her message list was empty; there were no new messages.
Since her “Have a safe trip” message, the pinned contact, Tu Zhizhuo, hadn’t messaged her for several hours.
Had she arrived home safely? Did she know Su Huaiwang was about to go to sleep?
Su Huaiwang was doubtful.
Tapping on her profile picture, the last shared content was about the extremely unappetizing noodles she had for dinner.
Su Huaiwang frowned.
Given Tu Zhizhuo’s personality, being “cyber-missing” for a few hours was nothing.
But why did she feel so uneasy?
After a moment of hesitation, she typed a message.
【Su Huaiwang】: Are you home yet?
No reply.
Su Huaiwang tossed the phone aside, took a deep breath to calm herself, and tried to suppress the baseless fear.
…
In the cold car, the phone screen lit up.
A hand with long, slender fingers picked it up, subconsciously pressing the fingerprint key.
Authentication failed.
The young celestial master then remembered it wasn’t her phone.
She had no intention of prying into others’ privacy. She had confiscated the phone simply to prevent Tu Zhizhuo from messaging Su Huaiwang and alerting the situation.
On the standby screen was the message Su Huaiwang had sent.
A brief greeting. Lei Yinyin simply decided not to overstep, assuming Tu Zhizhuo was asleep and unavailable to reply.
The phone screen was turned off and placed back in the center console of the car.
Lei Yinyin stretched and restarted the vehicle.
The roar of the engine sounded, and the car rattled along the mountain road.
She was vigilant of her surroundings; the wraith could appear at any moment.
Lei Yinyin didn’t believe she could be its match, but she had a protective amulet from her mother. She was perfectly suited to be the vanguard.
The pale car headlights illuminated a figure. A girl in a white dress stood by the road, extending her hand, seemingly looking for a ride.
Lei Yinyin stopped the car.
As expected, the girl slowly walked to the front passenger door.
Lei Yinyin pressed the button, and the car door unlocked.
The car started moving again, and the silent space was joined by a girl.
Lei Yinyin focused on driving, not paying much attention to the girl. The darkness enveloped the small car’s lights, lurking menacingly, making her feel a sense of dread she hadn’t experienced in a long time.
The girl, however, initiated the conversation.
“It’s so late. Where are you heading?”
Lei Yinyin answered truthfully, “Dayan Village. It’s just over this mountain.”
“What for?”
“To figure out a few things.”
“The mountain road is steep and unsafe for driving. Why didn’t you wait until morning?”
“A lost opportunity may not come again.”
“But it’s better to be prepared. Rushing in blindly might lead to something bad happening.”
The girl’s words were blunt and ominous. Lei Yinyin frowned, stomping on the accelerator.
“Then why are you waiting by the road so late? If I hadn’t passed by…”
A spark of realization flashed in her mind, but quickly faded away.
Lei Yinyin shook her head. She wondered if she was overly tired lately; she felt a constant drowsiness.
The car continued to drive.
“Life is full of all sorts of accidents.”
The girl spoke softly.
This didn’t sound like something her age group would say. Lei Yinyin glanced at her in surprise.
The girl was beautiful, like a jade doll, instantly stunning her.
But she still maintained the professionalism expected of a public servant. Suppressing the slight flutter in her heart, she said:
“Where are you going? I’ll give you a ride.”
The girl looked at her and smiled, her crimson lips forming a perfect arc.
Her heart beat faster. Lei Yinyin swallowed, unsure if the sensation stirring within her was excitement or…
…a premonition.
“Beiguan Village. Is that alright?”
The brakes screeched, stopping the car abruptly.
Lei Yinyin lunged forward onto the steering wheel, cold sweat breaking out on her forehead.
She forced a smile, hiding her left hand, and secretly forming a hand seal:
“There’s no such village in this mountain, is there?”
The girl lowered her eyes, gently nodding. “Originally, there wasn’t.”
“Hiss!”
A searing pain shot through her left arm.
The girl tilted her head slightly to look at her, her amber eyes filled with clear confusion. “What’s wrong? Aren’t you continuing to drive?”
Lei Yinyin held out her left arm. The three fingers that had formed the hand seal were already a charred black.
“Driving, I just… ha… I’m a little tired. Just a moment…”
She looked down to shift gears, large drops of sweat falling from her forehead.
Is the air conditioning broken? Why is it so hot? Is global warming this severe?
Lei Yinyin’s face was flushed, and she gasped for air.
“Are you hot?”
The girl looked at her with cold eyes.
“A little.” Lei Yinyin smiled, looking at her.
The other person still had that icy, jade-like appearance. She hadn’t broken a sweat, and the air around her seemed to carry a palpable chill.
Seeing Lei Yinyin’s unconcealed look of caution, the girl smiled sweetly. “You’ll get used to it. The people of Beiguan Village weren’t used to this temperature at first, but now they love it.”
The girl’s slender, pale finger pointed casually. Lei Yinyin followed the direction she indicated and only then realized that the car was surrounded by dense crowds of people.
Perhaps they couldn’t be called people. They melted, they howled, their skin and flesh fell off in chunks, and they clawed at the car windows, roaring and wailing. Chunks of rotting skin stuck to the glass.
The darkness was instantly dispelled by firelight. A raging mountain fire spread, quickly encroaching upon them, little by little licking at the ghosts that were barely recognizable.
Screams of agony pierced Lei Yinyin’s ears.
She pursed her lips, secretly gritting her teeth.
Bang!
Lightning flashed.
It was immediately followed by a cry of pain.
Lei Yinyin never thought that the thunder punishment she had cultivated since childhood would strike her own body today.
The charring on her right hand was even more severe than on her left.
The girl looked at her with a knowing smile, as if mocking her overestimation of her own power.
The fire continued to intensify. With every ghost it consumed, it emitted a shrill cry that was both painful and joyous.
Lei Yinyin trembled. Obscure incantations escaped her lips, and a golden light instantly enveloped her two charred arms.
Without hesitation, Lei Yinyin lunged forward, grabbing the girl’s throat.
To her surprise, the girl offered no resistance, allowing herself to be pinned against the seat, still smiling serenely.
“Are you trying to kill me?” the girl asked her.
“How could I.” She couldn’t kill, nor could she succeed.
“Too bad. But wanting to do something and being able to do something are two different things.”
The girl raised her hand, her pristine fingertip gently touching the charred gold on Lei Yinyin’s arm.
Lei Yinyin’s eyes widened in astonishment.
“Why are you looking at me like that? I’m also a ‘good one,’ of course it can’t harm me.”
The wraith knew how to provoke the young celestial master.
As expected, Lei Yinyin fell into a state of extreme rage. She trembled, her hands tightening continuously, and a low growl escaped her throat:
“You… evil spirit!!”
“You’re mistaken. I’m a wraith.”
Lin Jue was nonchalant, watching her attempt to kill her.
Lei Yinyin couldn’t understand why, even though she had gone to such lengths, the other person showed no discomfort whatsoever.
But she could only continue to exert force. Red faces were slammed against the car window by the fire. The flames smirked, crushing the wailing ghosts again and again.
This was the wraith’s violent dream.
All those within it were sinners.
But what sin was worth this endless torment?
Lei Yinyin did not understand. Her sect believed that all things were empty after death, and she had never doubted it.
The dead should be respected. She absolutely could not tolerate this blasphemy against the deceased.
Lin Jue had no interest in what she was thinking. She was slowly losing interest in this spectacle and the other person’s weakness.
Just then, the phone beside her vibrated. The screen lit up, showing the name 【Su Huaiwang】.
Lin Jue picked up the phone, looking at the content out of the corner of her eye.
【Su Huaiwang】: Are you asleep? So early? I can’t sleep. If you don’t message me back, I’m going to start my barrage of calls!
Lin Jue’s expression instantly changed.
“This is not your phone.”
Lei Yinyin, who was fighting for her life, froze.
Did they really have to discuss this right now?
Lin Jue flipped the phone over and back, finally confirming, “This is Tu Zhizhuo’s. You save people, fine, but why take her phone?”
Perhaps the disdain and blame in her words were too obvious, and Lei Yinyin’s surging anger was immediately slightly extinguished.
But she didn’t speak, merely loosening her grip slightly.
“Enough.” Lin Jue waved her hand casually. Lei Yinyin was flung away, slamming heavily against the car door.
The car swayed in the sea of fire.
With a concussion, Lei Yinyin tasted blood in her mouth.
Lin Jue ignored her condition, unlocking the phone herself and replying to Su Huaiwang in Tu Zhizhuo’s tone, telling her to hurry up and sleep.
As she replied, she was disgruntled.
Although she knew that her position in Su Huaiwang’s heart was probably different from Tu Zhizhuo’s, this didn’t stop her from being jealous of Tu Zhizhuo.
Otherwise, she wouldn’t have been so emotional that she couldn’t control her own aura, leading to this whole mess.
And she even caused Su Huaiwang to stay awake past midnight.
This was what angered Lin Jue the most. The fire outside intensified, almost completely engulfing the car.
Lei Yinyin’s condition was already terrible—blood loss, exhaustion, injury, dehydration… she was on the verge of death.
Lin Jue glanced at her, saying impatiently, “Aren’t you coming out?”
The next second, a figure emerged from the talisman Lei Yinyin carried with her.
The woman’s apparition bowed to Lin Jue. “My apologies for the intrusion.”
Lin Jue looked at her mockingly. “I thought she was your vanguard. Are you finally ready to show your true colors?”
Lei Zhengqing smiled faintly. “To kill you, we would have to pay a significant price.”
“So you sacrificed Su Huaiwang.”
“That’s not sacrifice. We trust you.”
“If you trust me, don’t send her here.”
Lei Zhengqing stared at her steadily for a moment. “Even if we choose to coexist with you, we must keep a layer of insurance.”
Lin Jue met her gaze without fear. “Then congratulations, that layer of insurance is about to break. She’s your daughter, isn’t she? Don’t you feel any pity?”
Lei Zhengqing looked back at the unconscious Lei Yinyin, her face showing undisguised maternal love. “She has to see the world eventually.”
Lin Jue was displeased. “I am not your tool for educating your child.”
“But you won’t kill her, will you?”
Lin Jue fell silent, then impatiently waved her hand. “Take her and leave immediately.”
“I understand. But we will continue to monitor Su Huaiwang’s condition afterwards.”
Lin Jue finally lost her temper. “What is this? Isn’t this disgusting? Do you have to watch other people date too?”
Hearing this, Lei Zhengqing’s first reaction was astonishment. “Are you currently… dating her?”
She genuinely couldn’t believe it, but Lin Jue was confident:
“Not yet, but it will be soon.”
Friendship plus sexual urges. Su Huaiwang will definitely propose dating her soon.
Lei Zhengqing thought for a long time, unable to figure out how to address the wraith, whose every action so far had violated the cardinal rules of dating. In the end, she could only give a dry blessing:
“Uh… Well, good luck? But remember, you can’t do what you did before again.”
When Lin Jue was just a pure little ghost, she did nothing but watch Su Huaiwang while she was held captive, but now she knew what dating was.
Lei Zhengqing felt she couldn’t think any further. Any more thought would make this scene unbroadcastable.
Lin Jue gripped the phone, extremely disdainful. “Get out immediately!”
