Chapter 29: Remember to Repel Mosquitoes in Summer
“Her?” Su Huaiwang gasped in surprise, then hesitated: “She has nothing to do with what we’re talking about, right…?”
Lei Yinyin smiled, but the warmth didn’t reach her eyes: “Don’t worry, I just want to ask her about the specific situation at the time.”
Su Huaiwang breathed a sigh of relief: “Then, Officer, could I ask you not to mention my amnesia?”
She added: “Um… I really don’t want others to know.”
After all, encountering something spiritual, Su Huaiwang didn’t want to scare Lin Jue, and she didn’t want the other person to worry about her.
Yes, in the ten minutes of talking with Lei Yinyin, she was completely sure that her amnesia was absolutely not pathological or psychological.
As for Lei Yinyin, she didn’t doubt she was an official. Rather, if supernatural matters existed in the world, it would be strange if the government hadn’t brought them under control.
She and Lei Yinyin were both pretending to be naive. She pretended not to know, and Lei Yinyin pretended that she didn’t know.
This was better for both parties; knowing too much was not a good thing.
But letting her know was a completely different concept from letting Lin Jue know. She was the person involved, and Lin Jue had nothing to do with this matter.
If possible, Su Huaiwang didn’t want Lin Jue to be involved.
Lei Yinyin looked at Su Huaiwang’s conflicted expression and immediately knew what she was thinking.
She couldn’t help but sigh inwardly.
Based on her intuition, the very person Su Huaiwang wanted to protect might be the source of her danger.
She just had no proof.
The doorbell rang again. Su Huaiwang collected herself and hurried to open the door.
Outside was the usual Lin Jue, smiling, with something in her hand.
“Pears, do you want some? They’re very fresh. I’ll share some with you.”
Su Huaiwang said thank you, took the bag, and slightly moved aside, revealing Lei Yinyin behind her.
The smile on Lin Jue’s lips did not fade, but her expression underwent an inexplicable change.
“This is?” She turned to look at Su Huaiwang.
Su Huaiwang felt inexplicably guilty, like she had been caught cheating:
“The officer who called two days ago about a follow-up visit.”
“Hmm?” A puzzled hum escaped the girl’s throat: “Such high efficiency?”
“After all, we can’t delay people’s work and life. The document from above also instructs us to accelerate our work efficiency.” Lei Yinyin raised her sharp eyebrows and extended a hand: “Hello, we meet again. I am Lei Yinyin, affiliated with the City Rail Processing Bureau.”
The woman stressed the words “City Rail Processing Bureau,” as if to remind her of something.
Lin Jue lowered her eyes, her expression unchanged.
“City Rail Processing Bureau? What kind of department is that?”
“It’s a department that handles sudden incidents! Ah! You know how it is with government agencies, it’s normal not to be entirely clear!” Before Lei Yinyin could answer, Su Huaiwang quickly interjected.
Lin Jue looked at Su Huaiwang, and it was unclear whether she believed her or not.
She slowly nodded, looking thoughtful.
“But have I met you before? Sorry, I don’t recall.”
Lin Jue still didn’t shake Lei Yinyin’s extended hand. Lei Yinyin didn’t feel embarrassed and withdrew her hand herself.
“That day at Baiyang Temple, I spoke to both of you.”
“Is that so? What a coincidence. Unfortunately, you’re too tall. I could only see the lower half of your face, so I don’t quite remember.” Lin Jue showed a regretful expression.
Lei Yinyin was indeed tall, measured to be over 180 cm. The reason was plausible.
But Lei Yinyin just felt like Lin Jue was talking with a hidden barb.
What a waste of such good looks.
Lei Yinyin steadied herself and smiled: “It’s fine. Since you’re here, would it be convenient for you to answer some questions for me?”
“What? Are you conducting a public opinion survey?” Lin Jue looked her up and down, smiling ambiguously.
Lei Yinyin shook her head: “Not exactly. I just feel like your relationship with Ms. Su is quite close. To be honest, we’ve encountered a bottleneck in the investigation we’re conducting for Ms. Su, and we hope to get your help.”
Lin Jue’s attention was no longer on Lei Yinyin the moment she said “close.”
She turned her head, her eyes shining as she looked at Su Huaiwang, remaining silent.
Su Huaiwang averted her gaze, a faint blush creeping up her ears. She whispered, “I didn’t say that…”
Lei Yinyin sensed a slight shift in the atmosphere between the two, but couldn’t quite grasp what was wrong.
She had to clear her throat and bring the conversation back: “So, what is your answer…?”
To her surprise, Lin Jue agreed very readily: “I can.”
“I don’t know what it’s about, but I’d be happy if I could help.”
The amber eyes rotated, returning to Su Huaiwang, smiling gently at her, giving a momentary illusion of drowning in them.
For the first time, Lei Yinyin doubted her own intuition.
If the other person were truly a ghost, even if she wasn’t panicking after hearing the name of the Demon-Slaying Bureau, there was no need to display such a deep, sisterly affection.
Could it be that Lin Jue is genuinely not the problem?
Lei Yinyin suppressed her doubt, temporarily focusing all her attention on the seemingly harmless girl before her.
“In that case, thank you for your understanding. Let’s go inside and talk.” Lei Yinyin stepped aside.
Filled with suspicion toward Lin Jue, she subconsciously blocked the other person outside this human dwelling.
“Please join us?” Lei Yinyin nodded to Su Huaiwang, her tone unconsciously softening considerably.
Lin Jue paused, squinting at the upright face smiling like a spring breeze, almost suspecting that the other party was acting this way just to make her emotional and expose herself.
However, after a moment, she scoffed lightly and gave up on thinking further.
What if she did expose herself? With such a minor Celestial Master, even if she intentionally revealed a flaw, the other party wouldn’t find anything.
…
“So, did you move here recently?”
“Yes.”
“May I ask the reason?”
“Family change.”
“What kind of family change, specifically?”
“My parents passed away.”
…
Su Huaiwang sat by, watching the two converse back and forth, finding it rather fascinating.
Both the questions and answers were very quick, completely different from how Lei Yinyin questioned her.
While ostensibly an information-gathering session, Su Huaiwang felt it was more like a debate, an unbloody confrontation between the two.
It was the first time Su Huaiwang had seen Lin Jue act so assertively. It felt…
She instinctively raised her hand, covering the corner of her mouth that held a hint of romantic, fluttering excitement.
Who knew that this small gesture would attract the attention of both of them?
“What’s wrong? Are you feeling unwell?”
“Is something bothering you?”
The two spoke in unison, then exchanged glances.
Su Huaiwang was a little confused: “Nothing… I just yawned.”
Lei Yinyin withdrew her gaze, her expression normal.
She had thought the strange person opposite her had done something.
If Lin Jue had heard this, she would probably laugh out of sheer exasperation: There’s a greater chance you’ll bite Su Huaiwang than me doing anything to her, alright?
“Then, the next question,” Lei Yinyin lowered her eyes to the electronic file in her hand: “What is your place of origin, and where did you previously reside?”
“Minguan.”
Like a bolt from the blue, Lei Yinyin looked up in surprise, unable to believe the other person had just stated it so directly.
The girl opposite her slightly narrowed her eyes, and a strange curve appeared on her lips.
“What’s wrong, Officer? I grew up in Minguan. Is there anything strange about that?”
“…No.” Lei Yinyin glanced at Su Huaiwang, who nodded at her: “It’s just that, as you know, Ms. Su went missing in Minguan for a while, so I’m a bit sensitive to that place name.”
“Oh?” The curve widened a bit. Although the room was cool, beads of sweat appeared on Lei Yinyin’s forehead: “Do you suspect I kidnapped her?”
Her peripheral vision rapidly analyzed the environment. If the person opposite her truly was a ghost, how should she escape with Su Huaiwang if she was outmatched?
Wait… outmatched? Why would she subconsciously think that?
Her gaze suddenly fixed on Su Huaiwang. Her face was a little tense, but clearly not for the same reason as hers.
“If anything, I wish I had kidnapped her. Maybe we could have met sooner that way.”
Lin Jue lowered her head, sighing with a seeming sense of regret.
In her line of sight, Su Huaiwang’s tension turned to shyness. She angrily pinched the skin on the back of the girl’s hand:
“I was missing, not kidnapped!”
Lin Jue turned to face her, her amber eyes curving into an arc: “I know, I know. Sorry, I just felt like making a joke.”
Then, she turned her head back, and the warmth instantly vanished: “Officer, I’m sure you don’t mind a little childish mischief, do you?”
Does she really need to say something like that?
Lei Yinyin suddenly felt a chill run down her spine, though she couldn’t explain why.
“Of course not,” she said patiently, fighting off the goosebumps.
The person before her was an exquisite girl carved from ice and jade, so why did she constantly feel an underlying repulsion?
“By the way, how old are you?”
“Twenty.”
“A little older than I thought.”
Lin Jue didn’t answer. Her eyes darted around, constantly trying to drift toward Su Huaiwang sitting next to her, clearly having lost interest in the little Celestial Master before her.
Lei Yinyin fully understood this and struck while the iron was hot:
“Then let’s get down to business. Regarding Ms. Su fainting due to ‘low blood sugar’ that day, how much do you remember?”
Lin Jue’s gaze finally settled on her:
“We were out for a walk. She suddenly fainted. I carried her back afterward. That’s all.”
Before Lei Yinyin could say anything, Su Huaiwang exclaimed first:
“You carried me back?!”
“Yes? How else would you have gotten back?” Lin Jue blinked.
Su Huaiwang, who had just stood up, sat down again, red-faced and shrinking into herself like a quail.
“You look thin, but you’re surprisingly strong.”
“That’s why our teachers taught us not to judge a book by its cover, isn’t it?” Lin Jue retorted without ceremony.
“That’s true.” Lei Yinyin didn’t want to argue with her too much: “So, did you really not feel anything strange at the time?”
“Officer, I’m a materialist, so no.”
“No, I don’t mean—” Lei Yinyin suddenly stalled. She recalled Lin Jue’s comments about the divine at Baiyang Temple that day. By all accounts, she didn’t sound like a materialist.
She instantly understood.
Looking at Lin Jue again, the other party lowered her eyes, her long eyelashes distinct, radiating unconcealed malice.
“Well, that’s all for today then.” Lei Yinyin calmly collected her file and stood up from the sofa.
“It’s over already?” Su Huaiwang was still confused. The other party came suddenly and left just as suddenly.
“Yes, I can’t get any more information.” She said pointedly.
Lin Jue smiled without speaking. Su Huaiwang frowned, subconsciously lowering her voice:
“So…”
“You don’t need to worry for now. Please use those mosquito repellents. I will send you some stronger ones when I get back.”
Although Lei Yinyin said this to Su Huaiwang, her eyes were fixed on Lin Jue.
Under her gaze, Lin Jue slowly spoke:
“There’s probably no need for that. She’s already wearing the one I gave her. The effect is likely sufficient. Look, the house is so clean. The Officer doesn’t need to trouble herself further.”
Su Huaiwang glanced at her out of the corner of her eye, perplexed, feeling that Lin Jue was acting a little strange today.
The officer opposite her looked like her face had frozen.
Lei Yinyin looked at the creature before her, which she was now almost certain was a ghost, and said deliberately:
“That remains to be seen.”
