Senior, Stop Pretending to be an Alpha - Chapter 16
Third Floor, Physics Laboratory.
As the end of class approached, the professor turned a blind eye and stopped lecturing. Many students slipped out into the corridor to catch some fresh air, leaving only a few scattered people in the lab.
Cheng Yeli leaned over, gripping the mouse with one hand while supporting himself against the lab bench with the other. The long sleeves of his white lab coat were rolled up to his elbows. His gaze was fixed on the semiconductor model on the computer screen, his handsome features illuminated by a layer of watery blue light from the monitor.
Soon, the sound of fluid typing echoed as a string of elegant measurement data was entered into the computer.
A sudden wave of dense exclamations erupted in the corridor. The clamor was completely muffled by a wall; Cheng Yeli didn’t hear it clearly, only glancing over before withdrawing his gaze.
A teammate beside him looked down at his phone, his expression turning into one of pure gossip. He lightly patted Cheng Yeli’s shoulder and said with a grin, “Hey, Mr. Handsome, stop measuring! The school beauty is here for you.”
Immersed in the vast ocean of astrophysics, Cheng Yeli frowned absentmindedly. “Who?”
“Are you serious?” the guy looked at him speechlessly. “Xie Bufei! Your rumored girlfriend!”
Cheng Yeli paused, dropped the mouse, and put on a mask of pure agony.
“How many times do I have to say it? She is not my rumored girlfriend!” He gritted his teeth, his tone carrying a hint of exasperation. “I have. No. Relation. To. Her!”
He and Xie Bufei had grown up together since childhood and were far too familiar with each other. They knew each other’s flaws, weaknesses, and every embarrassing moment. Because they understood each other too well, they felt more like family than friends.
Who could tolerate Xie Bufei’s occasional sharp tongue and pampered eldest-miss temper? Certainly not him. This “honor” should be left to some other brave soul.
Besides, how would two Omegas even make it work? Switch to being an Alpha for love?!
The teammate made a skeptical sound. “Stop faking it, brother. Who would believe that? Childhood sweethearts, both good-looking—it’s a waste of visuals if you two don’t end up together.”
Cheng Yeli stared at him deeply. “My friend, I would rather be with you than have an improper relationship with Xie Bufei.”
The guy recoiled in horror. “Bro! That’s really not necessary!”
Cheng Yeli was left speechless.
He had actually clarified his relationship with Xie Bufei many times to the public, but no matter what he said, it was useless. He frustratedly rubbed the back of his head, took off his lab coat, and walked out of the lab with heavy steps.
His teammate watched his retreating back, looking bewildered. Why does it feel like he’s walking to his execution?
As Cheng Yeli pushed open the heavy doors, he saw Xie Bufei standing not far away, leaning against the white wall with her head down, playing on her phone.
The clear sunlight outlined the stray hairs on her forehead, tinting her soft eyelashes and the tip of her delicate nose a golden hue. People in the corridor pretended to look at the scenery while secretly stealing glances, stunned by such a beautiful countenance.
Cheng Yeli felt absolutely nothing. He walked up to her quickly, every step aggressive.
Xie Bufei was looking down at a game, her fingertip dragging out a Weasley Firework card as the sound of crackling explosions erupted in her earphones. The next second, a shadow fell across her screen.
She looked up, saw Cheng Yeli, and raised an eyebrow. “Why are you looking at me like that?”
Cheng Yeli’s momentum deflated in a second. He pulled her to the side, avoiding the inquisitive gazes around them, and whispered, “Can you be more low-profile when you come here in the future?”
Xie Bufei took off her earphones and said lazily, “Why?”
The aggressive youth’s mouth turned down, his expression resentful. “Haven’t you heard the rumors about us everywhere? There are even people shipping us! I’m numb. How am I supposed to find a high-quality Alpha in this school now?”
“Wouldn’t it be even weirder if I came to find you secretly?” Xie Bufei crossed her arms, scanning him from head to toe. “With your taste in Alphas, you might as well forget it. Athletes in white socks—every one you find is a scumbag.”
As if his sore spot had been poked, Cheng Yeli jumped up and widened his eyes. “I—I’m still better than you, who doesn’t even have one!”
Xie Bufei seemed to remember something and laughed softly. “That’s not necessarily true.”
Cheng Yeli narrowed his eyes, catching her meaning. “Are you talking about Yu Qiao?”
Xie Bufei said candidly, “Yeah, so what?”
“I don’t think she’s all that great. Aside from having good grades, she’s very ordinary…”
The second half of Cheng Yeli’s sentence died in his throat under Xie Bufei’s sinister gaze. He quickly corrected himself, “Fine, fine, she’s the best in the world, okay?”
Xie Bufei rolled her eyes and sneered, “You don’t know shit!”
Cheng Yeli sighed helplessly. “Tsk, I won’t argue with you. As someone who’s been through it, don’t blame your brother for not warning you. When it comes to dating, you’re a fledgling who can’t handle it. To prevent meeting the wrong person, you’d better verify her values first…”
Xie Bufei made a ‘pause’ gesture and laughed. “I know, ‘Mother Cheng.’ I know exactly what kind of person she is.”
“Okay, as long as you’re confident.” Cheng Yeli didn’t press further and changed the subject. “By the way, did Xie Ke come to the school?”
Xie Bufei’s expression gradually cooled. “Yeah.”
Cheng Yeli looked at her with some sympathy. “Be careful and don’t overdo it… watch out so she doesn’t go back and complain again, like the last few times.”
“As long as she doesn’t act up, I’ll treat her as if she doesn’t exist.” Xie Bufei’s long nails lightly tapped the iron railing as she whispered, “But if she dares to come looking for trouble, don’t blame me for being unkind.”
Cheng Yeli sighed softly.
Seeing his worried expression, Xie Bufei cleared the gloom from her eyes and broke into a smile. “Forget it, let’s not talk about her. Didn’t you say you had something to tell me when you called me over? So, what is it?”
Cheng Yeli’s breath hitched. His expression shifted through a myriad of emotions—a mix of hesitation and fear. His mouth twitched as he quickly retreated a few steps, saying cautiously, “Before I say it, promise me you won’t get too excited… at least don’t hit me, okay?”
Xie Bufei was puzzled. “Tell me first, then I’ll judge whether I need to get physical.”
Cheng Yeli pressed his hands together in prayer against his forehead and blurted out in one go, “I’m sorry! Curry—Curry was lost by me!”
The smile on Xie Bufei’s face vanished instantly.
“Say that again?”
After the morning class ended, Yu Qiao didn’t return to her dormitory immediately. Instead, she went to the infirmary.
The school doctor measured her temperature and found it was a bit high, but everything else was normal. The doctor gave a simple diagnosis: “It might be a seasonal cold. The seasons just changed, and the body hasn’t had time to react. It’s normal to catch a cold or fever when the temperature drops suddenly.”
Yu Qiao usually kept up with a morning running routine and hadn’t been sick in years. She pursed her lips and said softly, “But aside from a slight headache and feeling restless, I don’t have any symptoms like a cold.”
The doctor looked at her apologetically. “The school’s equipment is limited, so I can’t do a more detailed check. If you’re really worried, I can write you a sick note so you can go to the hospital?”
Yu Qiao thought about it and didn’t want to fall behind in her classes, so she shook her head. “Forget it, thank you, doctor.”
She thought that the human body was strange; sometimes it would ache for no reason, and it would probably get better in a few days.
The doctor prescribed some cold medicine and something to relieve her headache. Yu Qiao walked out of the infirmary, carrying the plastic bag, and walked slowly toward the dormitory building under the bright sunlight.
It wasn’t noon yet, so there were few people on the road. As she approached the dormitory, she heard a sudden rustling in the bushes on either side.
Yu Qiao stopped and looked over curiously. She saw a large, fluffy tail hanging from the bushes, swaying gently back and forth.
Then, a round cat head suddenly popped out from above. A small pink nose sniffed the air before turning toward her.
Clear blue eyes met Yu Qiao’s gaze, and her eyes slowly widened. The kitten looked at her without hiding, only giving a timid meow.
Yu Qiao thought for a moment, tiptoed over, leaned down with her hands on her knees, and greeted tentatively, “Meow?”
Why does this cat look so familiar…
She frowned, took out her phone, and looked at the profile picture at the very top of her WeChat chat list.
“Gary?”
