Extra Chapter 126: Jiang Yunyi
This is the prequel to “The Little White Wolf”…
Jiang Yunyi was also touched by the liveliness at home. Among her peers, she was the eldest; even Fang Moyao, who was the same age as her, was a few months younger. As everyone’s older sister, she had always been steady and composed since childhood, and she was genuinely happy to see her sisters find their happiness one after another.
She used to be a firm non-marriage advocate, only having one brief dating experience in college. Unfortunately, after spending time together, she realized that the other person was not on the same frequency as her, so they broke up amicably and are no longer in contact.
Since then, she had never fallen for anyone else. Years ago, when she saw Shen Ya at ‘Kongbai,’ she was attracted by the cool and aloof temperament of the other person, but it was merely curiosity.
Since she didn’t take the initiative back then, she had naturally let go now. It was just strange that recently, she kept recalling the past. If she had taken one step forward back then, would everything be different now?
She quickly dismissed these thoughts. Qiao Xi and Shen Ya were already living happily, so why was she regretting anything now? It was truly odd.
In the evening, Jiang Yunxi and Fang Moyao both urged her to stay overnight, but she insisted on leaving. Although she could stay at anyone’s house, and her sisters would certainly be delighted, she didn’t want to disturb the loving couples. Moreover, she had things to do tomorrow, and her own home was closer to the company and more convenient.
“Then be careful on the road, and send a message in the group when you get home.” Jiang Yunxi and Fang Moyao accompanied her to the underground parking lot. Jiang Yunxi opened the car door and helped Jiang Yunyi in.
Jiang Yunyi fastened her seatbelt and rolled down the window: “Alright, you two go on up.”
“Come over when you have time.” Fang Moyao stood by, smiling at her.
“Mm, goodbye.”
Jiang Yunyi closed the window, stepped on the accelerator, and started the car. Seeing the exit direction, she turned the steering wheel and quickly disappeared from their sight.
Coming out of the residential area onto the bustling street, the surroundings suddenly became quiet, which felt a bit unfamiliar for a moment.
She held the steering wheel with one hand and rested her head on the other. While waiting at a traffic light, she couldn’t stand the quiet atmosphere anymore and turned on the music.
As she drove into the tunnel, the lights intersected, momentarily blinding her. A white flash instantly appeared in Jiang Yunyi’s eyes; the road and traffic ahead seemed to disappear. Before she could react, her vision went black, and she quickly lost consciousness.
[Breaking News: A pile-up accident suddenly occurred in Jingguang Tunnel. The number of casualties is currently unknown…]
Jiang Yunyi fell into a state of chaos. Drowsily, she seemed to feel someone talking beside her, but she couldn’t hear what they were saying. Her eyelids felt incredibly heavy, completely unable to open, and she couldn’t feel her limbs either.
She drifted off to sleep again. Some time later, the noise in her ears woke her up again.
“Strange, why isn’t she waking up yet?” A woman stared at Jiang Yunyi and murmured to herself, “Is it because she hatched suddenly on a non-birth day, making her body fragile?”
Jiang Yunyi was awake enough this time to hear the woman’s words, but she couldn’t quite understand them.
This time, her conscious state was much better than before. Although her head was still a bit dizzy, she could feel her limbs. Unfortunately, she still couldn’t open her eyes, let alone move her body.
Jiang Yunyi’s moments of consciousness were brief, but they became more frequent. Most of the time, there was no one around, and only occasionally would she hear people talking nearby, but she didn’t understand a single word they said.
She remembered that she was driving into a tunnel at the time, and then a white light appeared before her eyes, followed by everything going black, and she knew nothing else. Was she in a hospital?
But why had she never heard familiar voices, and why was there no pungent smell of disinfectant water? Instead, there was always a pervasive scent of fresh grass and flowers, as if she were lying in a flower garden.
She had lost count of how many times she had regained consciousness, but the one piece of good news was that each time her consciousness returned, her body’s strength recovered a little.
A week later.
When Jiang Yunyi woke up again, her eyelids fluttered and slowly opened. Her vision gradually focused. What entered her sight was a ceiling carved from wood, with some brightly colored vines on the side. She herself was lying on a wooden bed, covered with a soft, furry blanket, presumably peeled from some animal.
What place was this?
The wooden house was empty. Jiang Yunyi struggled to sit up. She tried repeatedly, and even though she failed every time, she didn’t stop.
Just as she was attempting to sit up for the tenth time, perhaps the movement was too loud and startled someone outside, the wooden door on the front right suddenly opened. A tall, slender figure stood silhouetted against the light in the doorway.
“You’re awake?!”
The woman closed the door and walked quickly. Only then did Jiang Yunyi see her clearly.
The woman was very tall, taller than herself, with silver-grey long hair and a white robe embroidered with gold edges. What caught her attention the most were the woman’s pointed ears and her pair of golden pupils.
“Are you alright?” The woman came to the bedside, raised her hand, and chanted a complex spell. Instantly, a five-pointed star pattern appeared on the woman’s palm.
Jiang Yunyi stared at the scene in horror. For a moment, she even thought she was still dreaming. But she watched with her own eyes as golden threads grew from the five-pointed star, and these threads pierced into her body in the blink of an eye.
In that instant, she realized someone was probing her body.
This was her first reaction. The feeling made her feel offended, even like a humiliation. At least, in her thirty-plus years of life, she had never been treated this way.
But now, even with anger in her heart, she could only lie on the bed and stare.
Fortunately, the golden threads were quickly retracted, and the feeling of being probed disappeared.
“It’s not a major issue. You were born on a non-birth day, which counts as premature birth, so physical weakness is normal. Speaking of which, such incidents are rare in our clan, but not without precedent. Unfortunately, the Elder with the same situation as you is currently traveling and we don’t know when she will return.”
The woman reached out and patted her shoulder: “Rest well. This is the new home allocated to you by the clan. The inheritance of a premature baby is incomplete. Once you recover, you can go to the Court of Dawn to study.”
Jiang Yunyi could understand these words, but when put together, she completely failed to grasp their meaning. She had lived for over thirty years, so how did she become a newborn premature baby? What did the woman mean by “our clan”? And what was “inheritance”? Why did the woman look different from a human? And where was she?
Before the woman left, she placed a book down for Jiang Yunyi and said she would visit every day. Jiang Yunyi didn’t speak; she didn’t want to expose her complete ignorance of this world yet.
After the woman left, she struggled to pick up the book the other person had left. The book was not thick, but the paper was not soft, even somewhat yellowed and old, and she didn’t know what material it was made from.
She didn’t have the energy to keep reading right now. Just trying to sit up had exhausted all her strength. Now that she was still, her eyelids felt heavy again. Despite trying hard to keep her eyes open, she ultimately failed.
Jiang Yunyi fell asleep once more.
Another two weeks passed. She could finally get out of bed and move around. The book had long been worn out by her. This book was somewhat like a children’s introductory picture book, but it was very useful for her to understand this world.
She had arrived in a world that completely overturned her worldview. This world had magic, many races, and monsters. And she was no longer human; she had become an Elf of this world.
Elves were all female, and all were born from the Sacred Land. Within the Sacred Land, there was a Sacred Tree, and the tree would bear cocoon-like flower buds. It took fifty years for a bud to hatch a new Elf. Every Elf was in its infancy upon birth.
However, in their infancy, they already resembled a 16 or 17-year-old human girl. Jiang Yunyi had already seen her current appearance, which was indeed very similar to how she looked in high school. The difference was that she also had Elven ears and golden eyes. But her hair remained black.
She was born in Anorien, a city-state in the south of the Elf territory. However, it was not the time for the flower buds to mature, making her the unique one.
Children born to the Elven race could be named by an Elder or choose their own preferred name, as long as it was reported to the Great Guardian responsible for their area for registration.
While she was conscious, she had already reported her name. The female Elf who visited her every day was the Great Guardian of their area, named Meiviss, an Elf who had lived for thousands of years. She was also an excellent healer.
Due to the difficulty in reproduction, Elves were few in number on this continent, thus every clan member was greatly cherished. Newborn clan members like her would receive a new home provided by the race and would be taken care of until they could be completely independent.
Although she could move freely now, ever since she fully gained control of this body, her head would periodically ache intensely. Meiviss had treated her many times but had never found the cause, only offering medicine for relief.
After spending some time in the wooden house, Meiviss visited again two days ago. After confirming she was physically sound, she told her she could start classes at the Court of Dawn.
This was the first time Jiang Yunyi had stepped out of her house since arriving in this world. Although she was trying hard to adapt to her new life, she was still stunned by the sight before her.
Her wooden house was actually built on a giant tree. These trees towered into the clouds, their ends unseen. Many houses were built on the trees, connected by thick vines. She saw many Elves leaping down from their homes. Just when Jiang Yunyi thought they would be dashed to a pulp, she saw them seemingly stepping on clouds.
The book Meiviss gave her taught simple spells, including a quick movement spell. Logically, every Elf was born with innate magic, and such simple spells could be self-taught by any Elf. Yet, she studied for a very long time and still couldn’t use it.
Meiviss didn’t say anything, but her eyes showed confusion, probably unable to imagine an Elf who couldn’t use magic at all.
Jiang Yunyi wasn’t unable to feel the extra power within her. But every time she tried to use it, her body was like a punctured balloon. The magic she managed to gather would leak out from the holes, and her body was full of holes, making it impossible to seal them all.
Meiviss suggested she ask the scholars at the Court of Dawn, as they had never encountered such a situation before and couldn’t provide an answer.
She had initially hoped to learn about her physical condition from the scholars, but she was disappointed. The scholars searched through all the books and couldn’t find a corresponding symptom for her. She could only grope for solutions, trying different methods to lock the magic within her body.
She had no Elven peers. All those attending school with her were much older. She became the bottom of the class, which was a great humiliation and a nightmare for someone who had always excelled academically. But she was helpless. Searching for all methods offered only temporary fixes. She still couldn’t learn any magic.
An Elf who couldn’t use magic was an anomaly. Although no one openly mocked her, the whispers always reached her ears whenever she appeared in the clan. She was isolated. To be precise, no Elf in their infancy wanted to approach her, as she was a freak.
But Jiang Yunyi didn’t care. She continued to look for the cause of her condition and tirelessly tried various unconventional remedies.
The turning point came on the day two Elders returned from their travels.
She hadn’t thought she would ever have contact with those Elders. When she returned after class, she found two familiar yet strange Elves in her wooden house.
“Oh?” The Elf with light grey long hair looked confused upon seeing Jiang Yunyi: “Ah Xi, doesn’t she look like someone we knew?”
“She does look very much like her,” the other tall, black-haired Elf nodded: “This face is so familiar, it’s Jiang…”
“Jiang Zhilin.”
“Yes, yes! It’s her. Look closely, she even has a bit of Yan Xun in her eyebrows and eyes.”
When Jiang Yunyi heard the names of her two mothers spoken by these two Elves, she stood frozen, staring at them in disbelief.
She blurted out the question: “Who are you? Why do you know my mothers?”
“Huh?” Fang Lanxi gasped, her eyes brightening: “Are you Jiang Yunyi?”
“Yes.”
“It really is Jiang Zhilin’s child.” Qiao Qianrou was also surprised. She patted the wooden bed, her smile warm: “Come sit down. We even met you when you were little.”
Jiang Yunyi was full of questions. She could feel that the two people meant her no harm, which was why she dared to approach, but she only got close, not sitting beside them.
Qiao Qianrou didn’t force her. Seeing Jiang Yunyi stop, she introduced herself: “My name is Qiao Qianrou, and she is Fang Lanxi. We are your mothers’ friends.”
Fang Lanxi?
Qiao Qianrou?
Weren’t those Xiao Xi’s mothers’ names?
Jiang Yunyi scrutinized their faces. Looking closely, they really did resemble Qiao Xi.
“Are you… Xiao Xi’s birth mothers?”
“Xiao Xi?” Qiao Qianrou certainly hadn’t forgotten that she had a child in another world. She had passed away without even seeing the child. Thinking of this, her heart was troubled. “Is she… is she doing well?”
Jiang Yunyi nodded: “She’s doing very well. She’s already an adult, has been admitted to Jianglan University, and has someone she loves.”
“That’s good, that’s good.” Qiao Qianrou held Fang Lanxi’s arm, her eyes slightly red with strong maternal love. Being able to hear news of their child after so long, both she and Fang Lanxi were surprised and deeply moved.
But now was not the time to talk about this. She quickly composed herself and looked at Jiang Yunyi again: “We heard about your situation before we came. You can’t use magic. I suspect you might have the Soul Loss Syndrome.”
“Soul Loss Syndrome?”
“You, like us, have transmigrated, but you hatched prematurely on a non-birth day. This means your body and soul were incomplete when you were born. You must be missing a part of your divine soul, which is why you can’t use magic. Qianrou was the same back then, but her condition was much better. Fortunately, Qianrou and I have a solution.”
Jiang Yunyi pursed her lips and didn’t reply, listening carefully to the two elders.
Fang Lanxi waved her hand, and a gold-edged spellbook floated beside her head: “This is called the Sacred Spirit Book. It’s a semi-divine artifact that Qianrou and I acquired during our travels. Divine artifacts choose their master, and unfortunately, we failed. Would you like to try signing a contract with it? This way, you can store the magic power in your body within the book, and you can extract it when you want to use it. The Sacred Spirit Book has a consciousness, and completely taming it is not an easy task, but precisely because of this, as long as it fully accepts you, you won’t have to worry about the problem of being unable to use magic in the future.”
Jiang Yunyi was tempted, but judging by the name, she knew this weapon was valuable. Why would they want to help her?
Fang Lanxi had already seen through Jiang Yunyi’s thoughts. She smiled and simply said: “We have lived in this world for a very long time. Elves are a long-lived race. In these long years, we have traveled many places but have never met anyone from our past. You are a pleasant surprise to us. The Jiang family helped us a lot back then. Now that we’ve met you, we finally have a chance to repay that kindness. Take it and use it. If you have any problems in the future, you can come and find Qianrou and me.”
As Jiang Yunyi signed the contract with the spellbook, in a hospital room in the other world, the person on the bed twitched her fingers, followed by the sound of hurried footsteps.
Jiang Yunyi opened her eyes. The pungent smell of disinfectant made her frown. She remembered that she had been in a car accident, so she was in the hospital?
Soon, she saw a doctor in a white coat enter the room, ask her a few questions, and then instruct Jiang Yunxi nearby.
The doctor came and went in a rush. When the room was quiet again, Jiang Yunxi finally sighed: “You were in a coma for a long time. You were only transferred from the intensive care unit to a regular ward yesterday. We were so worried, Jiang Yunyi, you made us so worried!”
Jiang Yunyi rarely saw Jiang Yunxi look so scared. She wanted to tease her, but couldn’t speak, so she just moved her lips, showing a subtle smile.
“You’re still smiling! Do you know how anxious we were! An eight-car pile-up, you’re only lucky to have suffered just a fracture and a concussion, but some people weren’t so fortunate.” Jiang Yunxi tried to contain her emotion. She would never forget the moment she received the call that night saying Jiang Yunyi had been in an accident.
She had never experienced such panic, but that night, her hands were shaking. Watching Jiang Yunyi covered in blood being rushed into the operating room, she could barely stand. The family clung to each other outside the ward. Even Fang Moyao fainted twice when she heard the news. But fortunately, Jiang Yunyi’s life was not in danger.
“Do you feel uncomfortable anywhere?”
Jiang Yunyi blinked and pointed with her finger.
“Your head hurts, right? You have a concussion, so headaches are normal. They will go away once you recover after some time.”
But this time, the doctor was wrong.
After Jiang Yunyi was discharged from the hospital, her head continued to ache. Later, even after she recovered, she had several follow-up checks, but the cause could never be found. She even consulted a psychiatrist, wondering if the concussion had caused a psychological trauma that made her think her head hurt.
But all the test results were fine.
She had no choice but to take painkillers to relieve the intense pain. In fact, some unbelievable things happened after the car accident, but she didn’t tell anyone, as anyone who heard it would surely think she was dreaming.
But indeed, she was dreaming.
She often dreamt of becoming an Elf, of arriving in a different world, where she stumbled and encountered many things. The dreams were often accompanied by headaches, and the memories of the dream would become vague every time she woke up.
Perhaps influenced by the dreams, she sometimes entertained the thought that she had actually died in that car accident, and her current self seemed to be gradually moving away from this world.
