- Chapter 14 - Chu Liruo, let's live together
The chapter opens with a seemingly lighthearted yet impactful line from Lu Xibie: “Chu Liruo, let’s live together.” Her words, though gentle, land with the weight of hailstones. Lu Xibie turns to look at Chu Liruo, feeling flustered by the trust she sees in her wife’s eyes. She thinks, Chu Liruo shouldn’t, shouldn’t… Even if she doesn’t hate me, she shouldn’t trust me like this.
Lu Xibie gazes at Chu Liruo, her eyes following the small mole near her eye to her pupils, which shine like the North Star—bright and full of strength. While it’s a good feeling to be trusted, Lu Xibie can’t help but worry about Chu Liruo. After all, posts about her on the school forum are trending, and her past reputation is terrible. Isn’t that enough to make Chu Liruo cautious? Even though Lu Xibie is just playing the role of “Lu Xibie” in a novel and hasn’t committed any of the horrible deeds from the story, she believes Chu Liruo still shouldn’t trust her so easily.
Lu Xibie quickly turns her attention to Dan Ruijing, asking, “Is there anything else? If not, we’re leaving.” She takes Chu Liruo’s hand and walks toward the maglev elevator. The alphas and omegas who were just gossiping fall silent for a moment, their eyes on Dan Ruijing.
Whispers start up again. “Wow, is Lu Xibie playing a high-level game? I don’t get it.” Another voice chimes in, “And her little wife…” Shang Lean mimics Chu Liruo’s voice, “I believe in Xibie.” He scoffs, “They look like a devoted couple. Has she forgotten all the days she spent chasing after Miss Dan?”
The gossip swirls. “Lu Xibie’s temper is so much better now,” one person notes. “We never used to dare to talk about her like this,” another adds. “Yeah, I was scared to at first, too,” a third says. “Especially since Miss Dan is here.” “That’s true,” someone agrees. “But she has a wife now…”
Dan Ruijing watches the two holding hands, her smile growing wider. This is good, she thinks.
As the maglev elevator doors open, Lu Xibie and Chu Liruo step inside, followed by Dan Ruijing. Before Lu Xibie can speak, Dan Ruijing says, “Liruo, I also wanted to go to the holographic practice room. Let’s go together, and then we can go back to the dorm together.”
Chu Liruo, who had been shrinking into a corner of the elevator, recoils even more upon seeing Dan Ruijing. Living in the same dorm as Dan Ruijing is already a headache. She had hoped coming to the “Origin Summoning” class would offer a break, but she’s just been pulled into a conflict between two people she had already blacklisted.
“I, I, I…” Chu Liruo stammers, looking to Lu Xibie for help. At this moment, she feels she can rely on Lu Xibie more than Dan Ruijing.
“She has other plans and isn’t going to the holographic practice room right now,” Lu Xibie says just as the elevator doors close, leaving only the three of them inside.
“Hmm?” Dan Ruijing turns to Chu Liruo. “Liruo, didn’t you say you were going? Why not anymore? Do you hate me?”
“No no no no no,” Chu Liruo says, shaking her head so hard she feels dizzy. How could I dare to hate you? No, how could I dare to hate either of you? You’re both powerful figures who could destroy me. I just want to study at Zigu Military Academy, do well in my classes, and serve the Federation. I don’t want to get involved with you at all.
“She doesn’t,” Lu Xibie interjects. Having read The Evolution of an Omega, she knows how dangerous Dan Ruijing is. She remembers the fate of Zhu Xiaotao, who was gutted and thrown into Wangyan Lake, and decides she needs to warn Chu Liruo to stay away from Dan Ruijing to protect herself.
Lu Xibie, thinking of the messy actions of the “Lu Xibie” in the novel, decides to distract Dan Ruijing’s attention from Chu Liruo. “We’re going on a date,” she says.
Dan Ruijing’s smile instantly disappears. “What do you mean by that, Lu Xibie?”
Lu Xibie looks her in the eye and replies, “I’m married.”
“So?” Dan Ruijing says.
Dan Ruijing expects Lu Xibie to continue arguing, but instead, Lu Xibie bends down in a dramatic gesture. “I know you don’t like me. I was wrong in the past. Now that I’m married, I just want to live a good life with Liruo.” Dan Ruijing sneers at Lu Xibie’s performance.
The elevator doors open, and Lu Xibie quickly pulls Chu Liruo out. Dan Ruijing watches them, her expression subtle. Lu Xibie, she thinks. How interesting.
Once they are out of the building, Lu Xibie glances back to make sure Dan Ruijing isn’t following. “Stay away from her in the future,” she tells Chu Liruo.
“Huh?” Chu Liruo’s anxiety subsides a bit now that they are away from Dan Ruijing. She wonders if Lu Xibie is worried she’ll tell General Lu about this—but no, General Lu already knows Lu Xibie likes Dan Ruijing.
“She’s very dangerous,” Lu Xibie says, looking intently at Chu Liruo. Although she doesn’t know when she’ll be able to end this world, she hopes Chu Liruo can live a happy life until then.
I know how dangerous she is, Chu Liruo thinks. Every day I live with Dan Ruijing, I wake up from nightmares and have to check repeatedly that the protective shield in the middle of the room is still there.
“Why did she say she wanted to go back to the dorm with you? Do you live together?” Lu Xibie asks, her heart sinking when she heard Dan Ruijing’s words in the elevator. She had thought things would be better for Chu Liruo once she officially started school at Zigu Military Academy, but she’s been assigned to a dorm with Dan Ruijing.
Chu Liruo sees the concern in Lu Xibie’s eyes, which seem genuinely worried. “Yes, we live together,” she confirms.
“Why were you assigned together?” Lu Xibie asks, genuinely confused.
“Is that a problem?” Chu Liruo asks innocently, though she has been telling herself it is a problem ever since she saw Dan Ruijing enter the dorm.
“Of course it’s a problem!” Lu Xibie says, looking worriedly at Chu Liruo. She remembers Chu Liruo’s earlier words, “I believe in Xibie.” How could you trust someone with a reputation as bad as “Lu Xibie”? Are you trying to get yourself killed?
Lu Xibie opens her personal terminal and quickly searches for information. Chu Liruo doesn’t know what she’s doing and doesn’t dare to look, so she just stands there. A moment later, Lu Xibie closes her terminal and says with a serious expression, “Chu Liruo, let’s live together.”
