- Chapter 21 - Jealousy and Giving You My Life (Literature)
Mu Jinyu wasn’t sure if there were better ways to help them through the current crisis.
But for now, this was all she could think of doing.
She quickly picked out the Chinese cabbage she wanted, paid, and left the vegetable market.
Instead of going home, she took a detour to the medical clinic.
As soon as she approached, the physician sitting in the clinic recognized her and asked, “Has that girl at your house still not recovered?”
Hearing this, Mu Jinyu secretly felt fortunate that she had come today; otherwise, who knows how long the physician would have kept this in mind.
She sat opposite the physician with a crestfallen expression, looking up at them. Her mouth opened, but before any words came out, a sigh escaped her lips.
Then she lowered her head again, remaining silent for a long time.
She looked the picture of extreme grief and distress.
This completely baffled the physician. They ran through their memories: Was that girl’s illness very serious last night? Could she have… passed away today?
That shouldn’t be right. Wasn’t that girl just suffering from a simple fever last night? How could it be that severe?
For a moment, the physician didn’t know how to react and couldn’t press for details, only able to stare blankly at Mu Jinyu’s performance.
Mu Jinyu sighed heavily several times. That look of despair and suicidal hopelessness on her face scared away the other patients in the clinic.
They were truly afraid she might do something foolish on the spot and involve them.
Feeling that her emotions had reached the right pitch, Mu Jinyu finally spoke with a sallow face and a trembling voice: “She’s better… and she ran away.”
Physician: “?”
The physician wanted to ask more, but she shook her head and waved her hand, looking as if she couldn’t bear to speak of it further.
“Doctor, you should check me to see if I have a kidney deficiency (sexual exhaustion).”
Physician: “???”
The physician was completely lost as to what she was trying to do. They looked at her complexion, then at her hand placed on the pulse cushion, and began to take her pulse in a daze.
After a while, the physician said, “There is no kidney deficiency. You’ve just been overexerting yourself lately; you need a good rest.”
Hearing this, Mu Jinyu heaved another heavy sigh.
She suddenly grabbed the physician’s hands, lowered her voice, and said with eyes full of longing, “Doctor, please prescribe me some medicine. I really can’t take it anymore.”
“You know, I redeemed that girl and kept her in that courtyard. No one else knows about it—only you know!”
“I really didn’t know who else to turn to!”
Physician: “???”
A mistress?
Their ears were being defiled! Why did they have to listen to such filthy things!?
The physician tried to pull their hands away, but couldn’t.
Mu Jinyu continued to hold on tight, saying, “But… but that girl despised me for being useless! She ran away this morning as soon as she got better!”
“She pestered me all night, every night, wanting to play those messy things. I never said I was unwilling!”
“Look, if she wanted to whip me or pinch me, I was happy to let her. But why did she have to despise me?”
Mu Jinyu pulled down her collar, revealing the wound on her neck.
Because she had been busy lately, she hadn’t properly changed the dressing, and the wound was exposed. The fingernail marks weren’t as obvious as they were initially; they were half-healed, making them look exactly like injuries left behind by certain “hobbies.”
“Look, Doctor, I didn’t say I was unwilling! Didn’t I just let her have her way? But why did she think I was useless!”
Mu Jinyu even made a move to pull at her clothes further to show the physician the “whip marks” on her body.
Physician: “…”
Fortunately, the physician was quick and used their other hand to hold Mu Jinyu down.
They had no interest! They didn’t want to see!
The physician was so overwhelmed by Mu Jinyu’s antics that they couldn’t even think straight, only able to mutter, “Even if you don’t have a kidney deficiency right now, you must exercise moderation.”
“Now I have to be moderate whether I want to or not,” Mu Jinyu said with a face full of sorrow and reddened eyes. “If my mistress hadn’t despised me for being useless and run away, I certainly wouldn’t be able to be moderate.
If she wanted my life, I would give it to her! But why did she run?”
“Doctor, please just prescribe me some medicine! I can’t live without her! Please, just let me win her back!”
Mu Jinyu was like a desperate drowning person clutching at a final straw; her expression was extremely agitated, and tears were streaming down her face.
Physician: “???”
Is ‘winning her back’ something a doctor can prescribe? What does this have to do with me? Why ask me?
The physician kept trying to pull their hands out of Mu Jinyu’s grasp, but she held on so tightly that there was no chance of escape.
They were forced to listen to her go on about how she couldn’t live without that mistress and how much she loved her. Despite agreeing to every request, she still couldn’t keep her; she truly felt she was useless.
The physician heard so much they started to feel like they were the useless ones.
With no other choice, and wanting to get rid of this heartbroken person as quickly as possible, the physician prescribed Mu Jinyu two doses of “strengthening” medicine.
As she saw Mu Jinyu off, the physician urged, “You need to mind the wound on your neck, don’t overdo it again…”
Halfway through, the physician stopped and sighed. “Sigh, forget it. You can’t overdo it anymore anyway. Go back and live your life well; don’t think too much.”
Mu Jinyu nodded while crying, took the medicine, and stumbled away.
She ran for several blocks in one breath, only stopping when she was completely clear of the clinic. She leaned into a small alley, panting heavily.
Heavens! She didn’t expect herself to be so capable as to put on such a performance at the clinic.
By now, the physician likely believed the story that Rong Heng had run away. Even if officials came to search her house, as long as they couldn’t find Rong Heng, she would be fine.
After all, no one could say for sure whether the person at her house was a mistress or the Regent.
It’s just… just that her reputation was ruined!
Mu Jinyu cupped her burning cheeks, her amber eyes darting left and right, feeling extremely embarrassed.
She hadn’t expected herself to say those things—talking about whipping and pinching. She was simply too good at talking nonsense.
Heavens! She had to keep this a secret forever. She absolutely could not let anyone else—especially Rong Heng—know about this.
She slapped her burning cheeks a few times and rubbed them back and forth until her expression returned to normal and wasn’t so stiff. Only then did she dare walk toward home.
When she got back, she was too embarrassed to speak to Rong Heng. Keeping her head down, she cleared the dishes, washed them, and honestly set about making her “Knock-Fish” noodles.
When Rong Heng had rested enough, she climbed down from the bed and crouched by the stove. Poking the “strengthening” medicine Mu Jinyu had brought back, she asked curiously, “What? What is this?”
Mu Jinyu was startled. Her hard-won composure shattered instantly. Her face flushed a deep red as she scrambled to snatch the two doses of medicine back.
In a muddle, she blurted out, “Don’t touch! It’s nothing! It’s nothing! Anyway, just don’t touch it!”
She tucked the medicine into her bosom and paced around the courtyard anxiously, unable to find a place to hide it.
What to do, what to do? She had to hide it well so Rong Heng wouldn’t notice anything suspicious.
Finally, she went into her own room, closed the door, and hid the medicine in a hollow under the bed.
Thinking that Rong Heng didn’t know where she hid it, she surely wouldn’t find it.
Mu Jinyu looked at the hidden medicine with satisfaction, breathed a sigh of relief, and cautiously returned to the stove to continue her noodles.
It’s just that when a person is embarrassed, they tend to talk too much.
Whenever she accidentally caught Rong Heng’s gaze, her mouth would automatically produce excuses:
“That thing is nothing.”
“That thing isn’t mine.”
“That thing is completely useless!”
