Returning to High School to Save My Wife - Chapter 24
After being reminded by Qiao Shuxue that day, Liang Qi restrained herself a bit.
In the past, she had always been undisguised, fearing that others would compete with her for Jiang Yuan or that Jiang Yuan wouldn’t feel her feelings. However, after carefully considering Qiao Shuxue’s words, she realized that being too enthusiastic could very likely bring trouble to both herself and Jiang Yuan.
She was fine on her end, but school was never short of rumors and gossip. Not only was there Yue Suxin, who watched Jiang Yuan like a hawk with ill intentions, but Jiang Yuan was also being pursued by the school hunk, Cheng Zhuocheng, which naturally drew more attention than a regular student.
If a same-sex scandal were to spread, it would definitely have a negative impact on Jiang Yuan. Jiang Yuan’s mother, Xu Guyu, would likely be unable to accept it.
The current Jiang Yuan was still an inexperienced high school student. Even if Liang Qi wanted to pursue her, it wasn’t appropriate to be too passionate; it could easily scare her away. One had to balance tension and relaxation when chasing someone—she understood this principle well.
Thus, at home on Sunday, Liang Qi didn’t rush to further her relationship with Jiang Yuan. Instead, she used Jiang Mu to indirectly get Lin Ruoyan’s contact information and added her on WeChat.
To win over Jiang Yuan, one must start with her family and friends.
Although she had only met Lin Ruoyan once, Liang Qi truly felt that Lin Ruoyan was a person of character. Since Lin Ruoyan welcomed her to visit often in the future, she added her as a friend ahead of time so they could communicate on WeChat if anything came up.
However, although Liang Qi intended to show restraint, her little schemes were still noticed by others.
Early Monday morning, Liang Qi arrived at school with her backpack. Unexpectedly, as soon as she entered the classroom, she was notified that He Wei wanted to see her.
Liang Qi had never caused trouble at school and always finished her homework on time. It was hard to imagine why He Wei would need to see her privately. Full of doubt, she put down her backpack, went to He Wei’s office, and knocked on the door. Soon, He Wei’s voice came from inside.
“Come in.”
Liang Qi pushed the door open and entered.
“Teacher, why did you want to see me?”
“Liang Qi,” He Wei’s expression was exceptionally solemn, “I heard your health isn’t good and that you’re always struggling to breathe?”
Liang Qi was stunned for a moment.
Oh no.
It seemed she had played the “sick” part too well, attracting the attention of some classmates who, out of concern, reported it to He Wei.
“I,” Liang Qi’s mind raced, “it’s been a little like that lately, but it’s not serious. You don’t have to worry, Teacher.”
“You almost fainted during PE class and even had tremors after class. How can you say it’s not serious?” He Wei frowned. “Liang Qi, don’t force yourself if your body has issues. If something really happens, what will your family do?”
“Teacher, it’s really not that serious. I’ve just been staying up too late recently, so I’m a bit tired.” Liang Qi felt a bit guilty. Initially, she did it to get closer to Jiang Yuan, and later to annoy Yue Suxin. But in the eyes of others, she truly had poor health and needed care. Thinking about how He Wei and other classmates were worrying about her, Liang Qi felt a pang of remorse.
He Wei couldn’t help but smile upon hearing this and said seriously, “Although the workload in the second year of high school is heavy, the semester has just started. You don’t need to push yourself so hard. I know your entrance rank in this class was relatively low and you want to work hard, but balancing work and rest is also important. If you force yourself like this now, you won’t have the energy to persist when the difficulty and homework volume increase later.”
Liang Qi nodded. “Thank you, Teacher. I understand. I’ll be careful in the future.”
He Wei gave a gentle smile. “Alright, you can go back now. If you feel unwell again, remember to tell a classmate or teacher immediately.”
Liang Qi left the office, only to run into Jiang Yuan arriving at school right outside the classroom door.
Seeing Liang Qi come out of the office, Jiang Yuan asked, “Liang Qi, did you go to Teacher He’s office?”
Liang Qi coughed twice and explained, “Yeah, but it’s nothing important. She just asked about my studies. You know, my grades were quite poor when I entered this class.”
Jiang Yuan always respected the privacy of others. She nodded and didn’t ask further.
“Then hurry into class; the bell is about to ring.”
Liang Qi breathed a sigh of relief inwardly, thinking that she probably couldn’t keep up this act much longer. She had to think of another way. If anyone asked again, she would just say her body had been well-conditioned recently, so the symptoms weren’t as obvious anymore. Over time, everyone would gradually forget about it.
Inside the classroom, Yue Suxin saw this scene through the window and poked Chen Jiayue next to her. “Hey, did you see that?”
Chen Jiayue withdrew her gaze from the two of them. “Teacher He looked for Liang Qi. I wonder what it was about.”
“Could she be badmouthing us? That Liang Qi is very calculating. Now that she’s the Biology Class Representative and Jiang Yuan is the Class Monitor, there’s no guarantee the two of them won’t conspire to fan the flames in front of Teacher He,” Yue Suxin said suspiciously.
“Let Hang Jiao go investigate,” Chen Jiayue tilted her chin, gesturing toward the back row. “Hang Jiao upset you last time; this is a good chance for her to make up for it.”
“Her? She’s more of a hindrance than a help,” Yue Suxin curled her lip, feeling a bit reluctant. “I’m afraid she’ll mess things up.”
“What are you afraid of? It’s better than us going ourselves,” Chen Jiayue lowered her voice and leaned into her ear. “Hang Jiao might not be great at getting things done, but if something really goes wrong, she won’t have the guts to rat you out. Just arrange for her to do it. Even if she fails, there’s no loss.”
“That’s true. With that foolish look of hers, I doubt she’d dare to say much outside.”
Once Yue Suxin was convinced, she turned around and hooked her finger at Hang Jiao.
Hang Jiao immediately put down her book, hunched over, and scurried to the front row. She instantly blocked the view of several people, causing students in the back to complain.
“Gosh, Hang Jiao, what are you doing?”
“You’re blocking the blackboard. Can you move to the side a bit?”
“Just like a big clumsy fool.”
Hang Jiao looked back with some annoyance but didn’t dare say much, only lowering her body a bit more.
“Sister Xin, what is it?”
Hearing the complaints from the back row, Yue Suxin also felt it was embarrassing and couldn’t help but scold her, “Look at you. You don’t know how to be discreet when you come over. So many people are watching you. I told you to eat less; you’re so fat, it’s embarrassing.”
“I’m sorry, Sister Xin.”
“Fine, fine,” Yue Suxin said with a very poor tone, “Go back as soon as you’re done listening.”
“Okay, okay. Sister Xin, you say it.”
“Go find out for me why He Wei was looking for Liang Qi. Remember, I want solid information.”
Hang Jiao couldn’t help but look troubled. “Sister Xin, how am I supposed to find that out? That was a private talk with Teacher He. Aside from Liang Qi herself, how could anyone else possibly know?”
“Do I look like I care?” Yue Suxin glared at her. “Can you get this done or not?”
Yue Suxin hated it when people said no to her. In her eyes, Hang Jiao was just a dog by her side. If she couldn’t do anything, why keep her around?
“But,” Hang Jiao had only uttered one word when she saw Chen Jiayue shake her head at her. She looked at the two of them with difficulty, knowing she had already made Yue Suxin unhappy last time. After a struggle, she finally nodded. “Then, alright, Sister Xin. I’ll do my best.”
“What do you mean ‘best’?” Yue Suxin grumbled. “If you can’t get it done, don’t eat with me anymore.”
“Sister Xin, don’t,” Hang Jiao’s entire face changed upon hearing this. “I, I will definitely find out for you.”
“That’s more like it,” Yue Suxin waved her hand contentedly. “Go back to your seat; don’t get in the way of people’s studies.”
“Right, I got it. I’m going back now.”
Having settled one matter, Yue Suxin turned and patted Chen Jiayue’s shoulder. “Jiayue, accompany me upstairs to find Cheng Zhuocheng after self-study.”
Chen Jiayue smiled. “What? Has your relationship warmed up?”
Yue Suxin said playfully, “We ran into each other at the stairs after school last week. I purposely asked to borrow a pen from him.”
Chen Jiayue raised an eyebrow. “You really have your ways. I bet you borrowed that item just so you’d have a reason to go back and return it today, right?”
Yue Suxin: “Hehe~”
The sound of their conversation wasn’t particularly quiet, just loud enough to drown out the morning reading. It reached Jiang Yuan’s ears, and she couldn’t help but call them out.
“Yue Suxin, Chen Jiayue, please be quiet.”
The moment those words were spoken, both of their expressions changed.
“It is morning reading time right now. Please do not disturb other students’ studies.”
Yue Suxin was arrogant and willful. Having already lost the election to Jiang Yuan, she harbored a grudge. She couldn’t stand being publicly criticized by Jiang Yuan. She felt that Jiang Yuan was deliberately finding fault with her.
However, since many students had seen her call Hang Jiao over to talk earlier, if she stood up to argue with Jiang Yuan now, she wouldn’t have a leg to stand on and would be disliked by other students for disrupting the morning reading. Thus, she could only swallow her anger.
Yue Suxin endured it until the end of the morning reading.
As soon as the bell rang, she signaled Chen Jiayue. The two of them whispered something, and then Chen Jiayue left the classroom alone. Yue Suxin, however, was in no hurry to go upstairs to find Cheng Zhuocheng.
Yue Suxin leisurely picked up her workbook and pen. As she stood up, she deliberately glanced toward Jiang Yuan and then walked away from the front of the podium. As she passed Jiang Yuan and Liang Qi’s desks, she somehow suddenly hit the corner of a desk. With a dull thud, the books in her hand fell to the floor in front of the podium, and even her pen rolled under Jiang Yuan’s chair.
“Ouch!” Yue Suxin fell in front of the podium. The skin on her delicate palm was scraped, looking red and painful, which drew the attention of many people.
“Yue Suxin fell!”
“What happened? Is it serious?”
“She didn’t get hurt anywhere, did she?”
“Someone go help her pick up her books.”
“Sister Xin, are you okay?” Seeing this scene, Hang Jiao quickly pushed through the crowd to help Yue Suxin up.
“I, I was just walking here when someone tripped me.” Yue Suxin bit her vermilion lip, and a thin layer of watery mist actually appeared in her eyes, looking as if she had been wronged.
“Who tripped you? That’s so excessive,” Hang Jiao immediately felt indignant for Yue Suxin. “What if you were seriously injured?”
“I don’t know. Just as I walked in front of Jiang Yuan, someone stuck their leg out.”
Those words clearly implied that Jiang Yuan had intentionally stuck out her leg to trip her.
The surrounding students increased in number and began to gossip.
“No way, the Class Monitor intentionally tripped Yue Suxin?”
“Maybe it was just a joke? I don’t think the Class Monitor would do something like that.”
“The Class Monitor’s desk is close to the podium; it was probably an accident.”
“Whether it was a joke or not, it’s very dangerous when something happens.”
Liang Qi couldn’t listen anymore. She glanced at the onlookers and scolded with an unhappy tone, “What nonsense are you talking about? Who saw Jiang Yuan trip anyone? Did you check the surveillance or something?”
Hearing this, Yue Suxin was so aggrieved she almost burst into tears. “Wuwu, Jiao Jiao, did you see my pen? I still have to hurry upstairs.”
Right at that moment, a startled male voice rang out from outside the door.
“Yue Suxin? What’s wrong?”
