Returning to High School to Save My Wife - Chapter 15
In the final tally, Jiang Yuan triumphed over Yue Suxin by a margin of more than ten votes, winning the election for Class Monitor. Meanwhile, the defeated Yue Suxin was left with nothing but the position of Life Representative—a role no one else had bothered to contest.
“This is infuriating! If I hadn’t been so unprepared last night, how could I have possibly lost?” Arrogant by nature, Yue Suxin couldn’t help but grumble after her defeat. Remembering how confident she had been just moments ago, she felt the current result was a direct slap to her face.
With her abilities, how could she lose to Jiang Yuan? It was nothing more than a lapse in judgment and a lack of serious preparation. She refused to believe the outcome would be the same if she had actually tried and they competed again.
She wasn’t inferior to Jiang Yuan at all.
“Sister Xin, don’t be angry anymore.” Hang Jiao knew Yue Suxin’s temper well and rushed to the front row to comfort her as soon as class ended.
She stole a glance toward Jiang Yuan’s seat, where she saw Liang Qi whispering in Jiang Yuan’s ear. Lowering her voice, she said, “I bet that Liang Qi gave her the ideas. Otherwise, how could Jiang Yuan have spoken so well?”
“Liang Qi?” Yue Suxin was taken aback.
Yes, why hadn’t she thought of that?
It was impossible for Jiang Yuan to have such strong public speaking skills. But Liang Qi’s father was a translator, just like her own; it would be perfectly normal for Liang Qi to possess such a talent. Given how much Liang Qi had been helping Jiang Yuan lately, it was highly likely she had a hand in that speech.
By what right? It was completely unfair!
An election was supposed to be a solo effort, yet Jiang Yuan had sought outside help. This was practically cheating! If Liang Qi hadn’t interfered, the Class Monitor position should have been hers!
Yue Suxin was far from accepting her defeat. However, since He Wei had already announced Jiang Yuan as the Monitor, going to the teacher now to demand a re-election would only make her look like a sore loser once word got out.
It was all the fault of that undiscriminating Liang Qi!
“Don’t worry, Sister Xin,” Hang Jiao said, guessing Yue Suxin’s thoughts just by looking at her expression. Her mind raced. “Even though Jiang Yuan is the Monitor now, it doesn’t mean you won’t have another chance.”
“What do you mean?” Yue Suxin frowned deeply.
Hang Jiao leaned in closer, fanning the flames in Yue Suxin’s ear. “That Liang Qi is always helping Jiang Yuan. Let’s find a way to drive a wedge between them. I’ve noticed Jiang Yuan isn’t even that enthusiastic toward her. Once they’re apart, do you really think we won’t have a chance to get Teacher He to replace the Monitor?”
Hearing this, Yue Suxin realized she was right. So, what if Jiang Yuan was the Monitor now? The class committee wasn’t set in stone forever. Let Jiang Yuan enjoy her little victory for a few days. Once they dealt with Liang Qi and focused their efforts solely on Jiang Yuan, surely they could find a way to make He Wei lose faith in her.
“You said to separate them… how?” Yue Suxin had failed to win over Liang Qi before, so now she felt her only option was to target Jiang Yuan’s perception of her.
“Sister Xin, remember when we overheard Jiang Yuan talking to Teacher He outside the office? That Liang Qi always acts like she’s in poor health. I’ve been watching her for days; she’s definitely faking it. I don’t know what she’s trying to achieve by getting close to Jiang Yuan, but if Jiang Yuan finds out she’s doing it on purpose, she’ll definitely put up her guard. That will be our chance.”
“You mean we should expose her in front of Jiang Yuan? But… if she’s doing it on purpose, will she be caught so easily?”
“If it’s an act, there will eventually be a moment she can’t fake. I actually have an idea…”
Sitting in the first row, Liang Qi had long since noticed Yue Suxin and Hang Jiao whispering to each other.
Although she couldn’t hear their conversation, by observing their expressions and connecting them to the events of the past few days, she could guess the gist of it.
She didn’t rush to expose them. Instead, she calmly withdrew her gaze. Noticing Jiang Yuan putting her speech notes back into her desk, Liang Qi suddenly let out a sharp cry.
“Oh!”
Hearing the sound, Jiang Yuan froze and turned her head to see Liang Qi clutching her chest, her face contorted in pain.
“Are you alright?” Jiang Yuan asked hesitantly, already suspecting what was happening.
“Not, not really.” Liang Qi’s chest was heaving violently. “I suddenly can’t breathe.”
“You!” Jiang Yuan instinctively wanted to ask why she wasn’t more careful given her condition, but she realized that pointing blame now was pointless. Instead, she asked, “What should I do?”
“I… I have medicine in my bag. Can you help me get it.”
“Medicine? Let me see.” In this critical moment, Jiang Yuan moved quickly. She immediately pulled Liang Qi’s bag from the desk, unzipped it, and found a small medicine bottle among the books.
“Is it this one?” Jiang Yuan unscrewed the cap, tilted the bottle, and shook it twice into her open palm. “How many?”
“Two,” Liang Qi said, her hand trembling as she took the pills from Jiang Yuan’s palm. Her other hand remained pressed against her stomach. “Two is enough. Could you give me some water.”
“Okay.” Saving a life was the priority. Jiang Yuan didn’t care about anything else as she opened her own thermos and poured hot water into the cap. She was about to hand it over when she saw the steam rising. She stopped and turned to ask Duan Shuyu in the row behind them, “Do you have any cold water?”
Duan Shuyu pulled an unopened bottle of mineral water from her desk. “This one hasn’t been touched.”
“Thank you.”
Jiang Yuan unscrewed the cap, added some cold water to the hot water to make it warm, and handed the cup to Liang Qi. “Take the medicine with this.”
Under the shocked gazes of Yue Suxin and Hang Jiao, Liang Qi with great difficulty swallowed the pills and finished the entire cup of water. After drinking, she didn’t forget to give Jiang Yuan a weak smile.
“Thank you. I feel much better now…”
Liang Qi kept her hand pressed to her chest. Her breathing gradually leveled out, though her smile appeared very strained.
“You should stop talking,” Jiang Yuan said, fearing another episode. She reached out to rub Liang Qi’s back to help her breathe. “Take deep breaths. It should make you feel more comfortable.”
“Mm.” Liang Qi did as she was told. Not only did the pain on her face diminish, but even her body stopped trembling.
A few minutes later.
“I’m much better now,” Liang Qi said with an apologetic smile. “I’m sorry. I have a bit of a heart condition…”
Fortunately, she had come prepared. That medicine bottle was filled with the vitamin capsules she took daily. Yue Suxin and Hang Jiao probably wouldn’t have guessed such a move in their wildest dreams.
“What an actress,” Yue Suxin said, dumbfounded by this display. “I can’t believe it. She even carries medicine. If she doesn’t become an actress in the future, she’ll be wasting that talent…”
“Can you just take medicine whenever you want? Isn’t she afraid of killing herself?” Hang Jiao added.
These words happened to fall right into Jiang Yuan’s ears.
Jiang Yuan’s brow furrowed. She looked up and criticized them sternly, “Yue Suxin, Hang Jiao. Isn’t it a bit too much to speak that way about a classmate who is ill?”
