Chapter 37: Ability – Chaos Rules.
In Xia Mingyu’s mental vision, the rift became sharper and narrower—a jagged cesarean section of reality, dripping with blood and thunder.
He stood on a small mound to gain a broader perspective. The howling wind whipped his long hair, and his thin clothes billowed like the petals of a blooming flower. The silver mask reflected the crimson light, contrasting with the vivid red of his thin lips. To any observer, he was the lone, wild flower of the apocalypse.
Small, deformed monsters began to crawl out of the fissure. The Sentinels and Guides on the front lines had already engaged in the night’s first slaughter.
Xia Mingyu tapped his cane on the ground. His mental power surged outward in a circular wave, covering miles. Every footstep on the ground became a ripple on a pond in his mind. He ignored the high-level fighters and focused his butterflies on those at Class C and below.
The absolute gap in power allowed him to bypass their mental barriers effortlessly. He activated his ability.
——Chaos Rules.
Most Guide abilities involve mental control, but as an S-class, Xia Mingyu took this to the extreme. He could subtly establish “rules” within others’ consciousness, briefly altering their entire perception of the world.
He realized now that he had been doing this subconsciously for a long time—influencing the base staff to overlook his zero pollution, or tempering the attitude of the dormitory monitors. It felt as if his experiences in the last Domain were a deliberate form of training to master this weapon.
Under his “god-view” orchestration, the weak and the strong found their perfect positions. Efficiency skyrocketed. A monster tide that should have been a catastrophe was being systematically dismantled.
…
Despite the harvest, the rift continued to widen. This wasn’t just a Domain; it was becoming a Zone. It would continue to attempt to merge with the world’s rules until its life force was exhausted.
Xia Mingyu couldn’t see the “Womb” of the mother nest inside the rift with his eyes, but he could sense it—a red, glowing core heavy with mental pollution.
An A-class Sentinel with mechanical legs sped past him. “Guide, link with me! I’ll scout the way!”
Xia Mingyu snapped his fingers. A butterfly manifested on the Sentinel’s shoulder, sharing his vision. The “Womb” was a hanging, honeycomb-like ovary, dropping thousands of eggs as it moved.
The Sentinel hesitated as he neared the terrifying mass. Then, Xia Mingyu’s voice echoed in his ear, soft and soothing: “Sir, please stay there and provide me with vision. Thank you… It will be fine. You will return safely.”
In a blink, the Sentinel witnessed the most magnificent and macabre sight of his life.
A literal tide of butterflies swarmed the mountain-sized mother nest. It was a single-sided slaughter—a bloody, beautiful performance. The nest let out a shrill wail and collapsed into a sea of blood. Within seconds, nothing remained.
“Sir, you can leave now. The rift is closing,” Xia Mingyu’s voice whispered.
The Sentinel sprinted back. He couldn’t help but reach up to touch the butterfly on his shoulder. It was too intimate, but he was entranced. The butterfly bit him sharply, vanished into a shower of sparks, and left him with a stinging reminder of his rudeness.
…
By 4:00 AM, the battle was over. Xia Mingyu, despite his deep involvement, was perfectly clean. He walked down the hill with his silver cane, his movements elegant and steady, melting into the shadows before anyone could identify him.
He headed toward the most crowded and chaotic part of the Northern Ruin: a black market bar. As a former part-time bartender, he knew that the best place for information was always the rowdiest pub.
The Northern Ruin was a miracle of survival—a place of imbalanced technology and zero conscience. He navigated the winding alleys of the black market. Many hidden, predatory eyes watched him, but as soon as they felt the slight leak of his S-class mental pressure, they slunk back into the dark.
The sounds of the Ruin were binary: sex and slaughter.
Xia Mingyu frowned slightly. It was ironic that in a world so raw and animalistic, he still held onto a stubborn, misplaced desire for pure love.
He reached the end of the market. The bar was a dark, nondescript building, but in his mental sight, its mental pollution glowed like a furnace. He pushed the door open, triggering a mechanical wind chime. Instead of a bell, it played a recording of the bar owner’s voice—a sequence of loud, proud physiological moans.
The patrons cheered as he entered; apparently, every chime was a cause for celebration.
A scantily-clad bartender leaned in close, his voice thick and suggestive. “Sir, what can I get you? The clear fluid of a Facehugger, a fine Bloody Mary… or perhaps, a long kiss from me?”
