Chapter 33: The Onlooker – High-dimensional whims, low-dimensional truths.
By now, Xia Mingyu was capable of annihilating a monster tide single-handedly.
This reinforced his belief: only through actual combat and practice could the potential of Sentinels and Guides be fully unleashed—even if the cost was cryptic and terrifying.
Xia Mingyu stood atop a mountain of Facehugger corpses. Blood cascaded down the cliff face like a crimson waterfall. His long hair was soaked in gore, clumping into dark, mysterious strands. His snow-white sword hung like a cold crescent moon.
His peach-blossom eyes, though weary, remained divinely beautiful. Deep within his pupils, mottled golden light spilled out, appearing as if it had crossed an infinite abyss from the primordial chaos.
The shining celestial staircase appeared once more.
As he stepped onto it, the Facehugger Domain was flattened into a black-and-white image, and the crescent moon was replaced by the Yin-Yang fish. With every new Domain he overwrote with his rules, the power within him grew—to a degree that began to frighten him. Overwhelming power is a form of authority; once abused, it becomes the conduct of a demon.
If there comes a day when I can no longer control this…
He shook the thought away. Survive first. Future later.
…
The staircase felt as long as eternity.
A normal person would have surrendered to the ultimate delirium, losing their sanity in the black and white forest. But Xia Mingyu remained unshakable. Even this steadfastness took on a non-human quality—a calm madness.
His mental stability wasn’t just a gift; it was the result of rigorous self-discipline. “The way of a general is to first govern the heart. One must remain unmoved even if Mount Tai collapses in front of them, and keep their eyes steady even if a deer leaps beside them.”
After the Facehuggers, he danced with human-faced bats under the dark of night and stood firm amidst a rain of blood. He fought vicious hounds in parched deserts for a chance at life. The intelligence provided by the base was correct: countless Alien Domains, endless monster tides.
He was heavily injured. Time felt like a single blink, yet also like an hourglass turned over infinite times. Eventually, it wasn’t even numbness anymore; killing became a muscle reflex.
Every time a Domain was branded with the Yin-Yang rule, Xia Mingyu felt a god-like “authority.” He could easily destroy or create anything within those rules. In one Domain, he merely glanced down and dropped a few beads of hot blood; to the creatures there, it became a “Divine Decree.” Because of those drops of blood, they grew new flesh and minds, waiting for tens of thousands of years for the “God” to return.
Xia Mingyu’s brief glance was ten thousand years to them. High-dimensional whims are low-dimensional truths. He was the true King of the Nutshell.
And behind the Yin-Yang rules, that Pupil remained. He sensed complex emotions from it—intimacy, familiarity… but also anger and sorrow. He began to call it the “Onlooker’s Eye.” It remained high above, indifferent and cold.
…
A deep, viscous delirium.
The pyramid altar amidst the waves, the majestic and evil statue of a deity with a blurred face. Xia Mingyu had dreamed of this so many times it felt like home. His body was a wreck, covered in scars and blood. If not for his faint breathing, no one would think he was alive.
The Phantom of the Evil God crawled before the statue. In previous dreams, it had said: “No being should worship That One, for That One cannot be understood, let alone believed in. That One is ultimate evil, the beginning and end of all things—blind, idiotic chaos.”
But now, the Phantom knelt before the throne, begging for ambition and power.
Xia Mingyu tried to speak, but his voice was ruined, reduced to a monstrous hiss. His vocal cords had been crushed by a Cyclops—a creature from a nightmare swamp with человеческие (human) features that made him nauseous. Was it once human? The thought was bone-chilling.
The statue vibrated. The Phantom was consumed and absorbed. The sightless eyes of the statue gradually filled with a golden hue, looking down at Xia Mingyu. Was it mockery? Pity?
No. There was nothing in those eyes. Humans are not capable of decoding the information a High Deity transmits.
Xia Mingyu closed his eyes, exhausted. Is this the end? The staircase was infinite, and the spark of life was as small as a firefly. As he sank into the void of death once more, he felt a soothing touch. He was back in his swaddling clothes. He was about to be reborn.
Under the deity’s gaze, butterflies from the cold waves broke their cocoons, swarming over Xia Mingyu’s fallen body. Thousands of wings vibrated, revealing ominous eye-like patterns on their tips. They formed a cocoon of light and madness.
Fresh, warm blood soaked the butterflies. Having feasted on his flesh, they became even more beautiful. They scattered and then coalesced, flying upward.
Leave this undersea palace. Leave this abyssal ocean. Break free from the edge of life and death, and return to the world where you belong.
