- chapter 30 - The Beyond
Chapter 30: The Beyond – Xia Mingyu can feel the pulse of this Domain.
Karl stammered, “Your blades…”
Matt, more familiar with mental forging, recognized the traces of energy on the weapons. “Is that… Nuowei’s ice? How did you forge it?”
Xia Mingyu looked from the edge of the blade to the hilt. After being infused with his mental power, the twin swords felt like extensions of his own body. “I imagined them as mine to command.”
Matt clicked his tongue. “To achieve this through pure intuition… are you really only B-class?” He saw a flicker of hope. “It’s not just the blades. You can imagine anything into service. Choosing a medium to carry your mental power is choosing how you manifest your will.”
Xia Mingyu understood instantly. Like Professor Theresa said at Dove Academy, Sentinels and Guides operated on the logic of consciousness. The human brain was the vessel, imagination the bridge, linking to an unknown energy source to pull it into three-dimensional space.
…
Something had changed.
Perhaps it happened when he shattered the void-glass, or when he stared into the Giant Eye. His consciousness felt thin, blurred. He was no longer a person in 3D space, but a flat charcoal drawing on paper—a 2D reflection.
Maybe it’s already over. Everyone is dead.
The rain of corpses flooded the cliff. Xia Mingyu stepped over mountains of bodies. He walked for what felt like an eternity until he reached “The Beyond.”
But “The Beyond” was exactly like “This Side.” The black and white forests were two sides of the same coin, a loop with no end. He saw a giant butterfly at the finish line of his life.
Delirium?
The fear within the Domain was eroding him. Xia Mingyu forced a deep breath, using his sword as a crutch to recover from the lack of oxygen. He analyzed the vision: 3D vs 2D. This side vs the Beyond. Death and the Butterfly.
When he thought of the “Butterfly,” his mental seascape shook. The swarms of butterflies in his mind struggled against their cages, desperate to reach him. Even the forbidden idol in his mental landscape trembled.
…
In a space overlapping Xia Mingyu’s reality, a colossal entity unfurled. Golden eyes, ancient and piercing, cut through dimensions. It was an amorphous, god-like being. Thick, stinking tentacles flickered like Medusa’s snakes, licking at Xia Mingyu’s heels.
An inhuman voice echoed, inducing madness: “K’n-yan of the blue light… Yoth of the red light… N’kai of the darkness…” “Belonging to the end of the world… Chaos… Sacrifice…”
The chant sounded as if it were flowing from a dark seabed light-years away. It was a call from the outer universe, luring humanity into ultimate delirium.
…
Tang Yaopeng and the survivors finished another round. Nuowei was dead. Her ice had withered with her physical strength. When the world inverted, her body vanished.
Tang Yaopeng tried to “understand” the Domain, but he realized that understanding was a form of madness. If he grasped the logic of this nightmare, would he still be human?
He grew weaker. His teammates’ mental bodies were dry. But as the rounds increased, the monsters’ faces became clearer. He felt a sickening jolt—he was looking at his own reflection in the monsters.
A piercing shriek erupted from below the cliff. Tang Yaopeng turned.
It was a magnificent, horrifying sight. Giant black wings, dripping with mist, occupied his vision. At the base of the wings was Xia Mingyu’s silhouette. The “wings” were actually his twin blades, forged and extended by mental power.
Xia Mingyu stood on the back of a collapsing beast, his blades pulsing like the wings of a fallen Satan. The giant tumor in the sky throbbed; Tang Yaopeng could almost hear it scream.
Behind Xia Mingyu, the Yin-Yang symbol rotated. He looked like a Black Reaper standing atop a mountain of corpses, more awe-inspiring than the Domain itself.
The monster was dead. They had won?
…
“Tang Yaopeng! Move!” Xia Mingyu screamed.
Too late. A blade pierced Tang Yaopeng from behind. His black silhouette fell and vanished. In a blink, a “White” Tang Yaopeng appeared.
“Senior! You’re here! Did you kill it? Can we leave?” The boy didn’t remember his own death. He had internalized the Domain’s rules at the cost of his soul.
Xia Mingyu swallowed the blood rising in his throat. He, too, might have died multiple times already.
The “Infinite Line” that divided the space vanished. The Beyond was a mirror of This Side. Figures on the other side—including a “White” Nuowei holding her staff—were climbing the barrier like zombies, desperate to cross over.
Death was just a swap between two sides. Every death was a rebirth. They had achieved a grotesque form of eternal life.
Xia Mingyu felt the Domain’s pulse. By killing the monster, he hadn’t ended the nightmare; he had triggered a rule change. The Domain was now expanding, vomiting out more black and white humans to fill its new cycle. It was a gluttonous feast.
The Yin-Yang in the sky was a mockery.
Xia Mingyu raised his wing-like blades toward the heavens. “Come out!”
The Yin-Yang flipped, revealing the black-and-white pupil. Xia Mingyu didn’t hesitate. He threw his long blade straight at the eye.
Before the blade struck the pupil, it shattered a dimensional mirror. In Xia Mingyu’s mental landscape, the sound of breaking glass was deafening.
