Chapter 26: Black and White – The little ancestor who acts spoiled for praise even when fetching a frisbee…
It was exactly as Matt said: Xia Mingyu had never seen such a diverse armory.
Once Nuowei arrived, the group boarded the Spirit Guild’s specialized transport. Matt, bursting with enthusiasm, dragged Xia Mingyu to the weapons rack to introduce the gear. The other Sentinels quickly grabbed their preferred energy guns—mostly E-class models with reinforced ammunition—and headed to the rest cabin for a final thirty-minute nap before arrival.
“These energy guns are simple,” Matt explained. “But you’re a B-class Guide, right? Don’t try to use anything above B-class. The recoil and energy surge could break your bones or even kill you.”
Break my bones… Xia Mingyu smiled thinly. He knew that feeling all too well.
He picked up a sleek black energy pistol. A passing Sentinel snorted, “Guides should stay away from guns. Just stand back and focus on the mental link.”
Xia Mingyu’s brow arched. With a graceful movement, he chambered a round and pointed the barrel directly at the Sentinel’s forehead. The man jumped back, but Xia Mingyu’s hand was a rock; the muzzle followed his every move with terrifying precision.
“Hey! I was just talking! Put it down, it’s loaded!”
Xia Mingyu tilted the gun slightly, revealing a smile that was as beautiful as it was cold. “I’m just playing around too. Why are you so scared?”
He spun the gun on his finger, expertly ejecting the bullet before it could fire. The Sentinel glared at him, realized this “rookie” was a hidden thorn, and retreated without another word.
Matt watched, impressed. “Don’t mind him. Just do what you can. I didn’t realize you were so familiar with firearms.”
Xia Mingyu eventually chose a pair of twin blades. They were simple cold weapons, but reinforced with energy to prevent monster wounds from healing. At Matt’s insistence, he also tucked an energy pistol into his belt. “Seven steps away, the gun is fast,” Matt quoted. “Within seven steps, it’s faster and deadlier.”
…
In the cabin, Xia Mingyu found Tang Yaopeng and Nuowei. The girl was holding a golden staff, and Tang Yaopeng was blushing furiously under her gaze, unable to string a sentence together.
When he saw Xia Mingyu, Tang Yaopeng jumped up like a rescued puppy. “Senior!”
Xia Mingyu teased him softly, “Why not use this chance to get to know her better?” Tang Yaopeng looked like he wanted to crawl into a hole. He reminded Xia Mingyu of the Pomeranian and Samoyed he had owned long ago—sweet, eager to please, and constantly looking for a head pat.
Xia Mingyu rubbed the boy’s head, making his cowlick wobble.
Nuowei greeted them softly. She explained that her golden staff was an “Ability Catalyst.” Rare for a D-class Sentinel, she had awakened the power to summon ice and snow, but lacked the control to manifest it without a medium.
As they talked, the view outside the window changed. The crimson sky was suddenly filled with ripples of iridescent light—hundreds of “derivative domains” scattered like raindrops. It was a scene of terrifying, alien beauty. Some of these light waves shattered like glass, merging the domain’s rules with reality to form irreversible “Zones” where pollution ran rampant.
Tang Yaopeng turned pale. It was his first time entering a Domain.
Xia Mingyu placed a reassuring hand on his shoulder. Tang Yaopeng looked at his Senior’s calm gaze and felt his courage return. “Senior, I’ll… I’ll work hard!”
He really is like those dogs who want a treat after catching a frisbee, Xia Mingyu thought warmly. “I believe you.”
The transport doors hissed open. The stench of blood, rot, and static electricity rushed in. This was the breath of the battlefield. The team leaped out, plunging into the swirling light.
…
After a disorienting swirl of heat and cold, Tang Yaopeng hit the ground. When his vision cleared, he froze.
A world of pure Black and White.
It wasn’t a static landscape. The “black” was a writhing mass of life—mountains and forests composed of millions of lines moving like snakes. The “white” was a blinding, restless void that stung the eyes.
Tang Yaopeng looked down at his own hands. He had become a shifting silhouette of black threads.
“Senior?” he called out.
No response. There wasn’t even an echo; the air felt uneven, as if some patches were a vacuum. He tried calling for Nuowei and Matt, but the only reply was an eerie, flute-like moan from the black forest that gave him goosebumps.
He turned back toward the cliff and gasped. In the white sky, a massive, pulsating tumor of black and white threads throbbed like a heartbeat. It felt… alive. It was a cold, god-like eye looking down at the world.
Looking over the edge of the cliff, he saw the chaos below. Thousands of black and white entities were entangled in a violent, silent struggle.
Are they… fighting each other?
