- Chapter 4 - Spending Time with Isabella
As for the little maid, the very one who had previously sent Elysia tumbling. Elysia had decided to forgive her, seeing as it hadn’t been intentional. Given that the girl was genuinely concerned for her safety, and because Elysia found her quite likable at first glance, she had appointed the girl as her personal attendant. After all, who could say no to a timid and adorable little maid?
Through a week of getting to know each other, Elysia learned that the maid was barely sixteen, much younger than herself, and had come to work at the palace because her family was struggling financially.
“Princess… is there anything else you’d like to eat? I can go fetch something for you.”
The little maid looked at the empty cherry bowl and offered to bring more snacks.
“No need, Xiaobai. I want to go for a stroll.”
When Elysia had asked for her name, the girl said she could simply be called Xiaobai, and Elysia had addressed her that way ever since.
“Understood. I shall go inform His Majesty and the others.”
Xiaobai turned to leave as she spoke. To ensure Elysia was properly cared for, her room had been situated very close to the quarters of Rhodas and her siblings, specifically to prevent another “incident.”
However, Xiaobai hadn’t taken two steps before Elysia grabbed her arm.
“Don’t! Don’t tell my father.”
At Elysia’s pleading, Xiaobai slowly turned around.
“We can just go by ourselves. Telling him will only make them worry all over again.”
With that, Elysia took Xiaobai’s hand and happily led her out the door.
Yet, less than ten minutes later, Elysia was being hauled back into her room, leaning heavily on Xiaobai for support.
“Really, Princess… you should have just let me inform His Highness so he could arrange a carriage. Your constitution is simply too frail.”
Xiaobai helped the panting Elysia back to the bed and let her sit down to catch her breath. Elysia, meanwhile, stared blankly at the ceiling before collapsing backward with a look of utter despair.
Indeed, such was the state of her physical health. Without protection, she was the type who could be suplexed by an ant the moment she stepped outside.
“Aaaargh!! I just want to see the world! Hmph!!”
After lying on the bed for a while, the exhaustion finally began to fade, and she started grumbling and thrashing about. Xiaobai simply watched her vent, having already grown accustomed to the sight.
“Princess, please mind your public image.”
“I can’t even make it out of the palace! Who am I keeping up an image for? How annoying!”
The more Elysia thought about her current physique, the angrier she got. Finally, she buried her face in her pillow like an ostrich. The little maid watched this and sighed softly. She truly wanted to help, but she was powerless.
Since she was a child, Xiaobai had heard rumors of a sickly princess living deep within the palace. She was said to be the most beautiful woman in the Roland Empire—ethereal, breathtaking, and tragically fragile. People described her as a delicate beauty whose sorrowful eyes could captivate anyone.
That person was, of course, the current Elysia. In fact, because of her, many noblewomen in the empire had started mimicking her look, sparking a “sickly beauty” trend.
Elysia, the source of it all, remained blissfully unaware. While the outside world chased the aesthetic of being frail, she absolutely loathed her wretched, weak body. Others were merely pretending, but she was the real deal.
“Is little Elysia throwing a tantrum again?”
As Elysia kept her face buried, the door creaked open, followed by a pleasant female voice.
Elysia lifted her head to see a tall, stunning woman with golden wavy hair leaning against the doorframe. It was Isabella, looking on with a tender expression as she surveyed the messy bedsheets Elysia had ruffled during her outburst.
“Second Sister! Waaah…”
The moment Elysia saw it was Isabella, her anger vanished, replaced instantly by a pitiful, pouting expression. Over the past week, she had gone from being unfamiliar with this body to shamelessly acting like a spoiled child.
Seeing Elysia’s teary-eyed look, Isabella immediately walked over and sat beside her.
“What’s wrong? Who upset our little Elysia?” Isabella asked gently. She reached out and placed a hand on Elysia’s head, stroking her hair with practiced, soothing motions.
“Hehe… it’s nothing, really…”
Whatever negative emotions Elysia had felt were swept away by Isabella’s touch. Being comforted by such a gentle beauty with a “head pat” was practically every man’s dream in her previous life!
“It was about your health again, wasn’t it?” Isabella saw right through her.
“I guess nothing escapes your eyes, Sister. Haha…” Elysia laughed awkwardly, effectively confirming the guess.
Isabella gave a soft smile. “You’ve certainly become quite playful. You’re entirely different than you used to be.”
“Am I?”
Elysia scrambled up and sat on the edge of the bed, tilting her head as she looked at Isabella. “Then, do you like the old me or the current me better?”
“I think the current Elysia is better. The old Elysia was…” Isabella’s expression shifted into something complex, and her words trailed off. “It doesn’t matter. As long as you are happy and being yourself, we will all love you.”
Isabella smiled and reached out again, her hand gliding from Elysia’s forehead down the length of her smooth hair, as if she were savoring the feeling of having her sister back.
“Well, that’s a bit of a sly answer, Sister,” Elysia grumbled playfully, shaking her head to dislodge Isabella’s hand. “Then, why don’t you tell me what I was like before?”
