- Chapter 24 - A Rift Forming?
Aria gazed at Illycia before her, finding her behavior somewhat impudent.
“Are you serious?”
“Of course! Surely someone as powerful as you—no, I mean as powerful a dragon—can manage a simple magic trick?”
Illycia’s words clearly made Aria pause for a moment.
“Fine,” Aria sighed, snapping her fingers with a crisp sound. Instantly, Illycia felt a refreshing breeze sweep over her entire body.
Afterward, Illycia felt completely refreshed and comfortable.
“This is…”
Illycia glanced at her dress, then reached back to touch her white hair, quickly realizing what spell Aria had used.
“A simple and common Cleansing Spell,” Aria explained, remembering that Illycia hadn’t had a chance to bathe the previous night due to the commotion.
So Aria decided to demonstrate the spell to Illycia, hoping to clean her up in the process.
“Wow… that’s amazing!” Illycia exclaimed, perfectly playing the role of Aria’s little fangirl and showering her with praise.
“If you really want to learn, it’s not impossible,” Aria said casually, glancing at Illycia’s expression.
As expected, the moment Aria finished speaking, Illycia’s large, watery eyes lit up with intense anticipation.
“Then… then… then teach me!” Illycia pleaded, her gaze fixed on Aria. If Aria could truly teach her magic, Illycia thought, she’d forgive her for kidnapping her in the first place!
After all, this was magic—something Illycia had yearned for ever since arriving in this world. She even began imagining herself traveling the world after mastering magic, soaring through the skies with her newfound abilities.
“But… only after you help me break the Dragon Race’s seal.”
As expected, Illycia knew Aria’s offer to teach her magic had ulterior motives. It all came back to the original mission.
“Tch… If you don’t want to teach me, just say so. Excuses…” Illycia retorted, her voice tinged with annoyance.
Aria found Illycia’s expression amusing, yet also pitied the human’s ignorance.
“Human, it’s not that I don’t want to teach you. It’s because you possess the Anti-Magic Physique. You can’t learn magic.”
After a moment’s thought, Aria decided to explain the situation to the clueless human.
As expected, Illycia’s gaze immediately snapped back to Aria.
After all, Illycia only knew she possessed this physique, but understood very little about its implications.
As they waited for their meal, Aria began explaining some of the unique characteristics of the Anti-Magic Physique, while Illycia listened intently.
The Anti-Magic Physique, as its name suggests, nullifies any magic or magically constructed objects it comes into contact with.
At this point, Illycia quickly raised a question.
“But… didn’t you just use a Cleansing Spell on me earlier?”
“That’s because your Anti-Magic Physique is sealed.”
“Sealed…?”
Hearing Aria’s words, Illycia suddenly felt that her body held many hidden stories.
For example, she had no idea about the seal Aria mentioned.
In fact, she had only learned about her Anti-Magic Physique from Aria herself. Her parents had never mentioned it.
Aria then slowly explained the nature of the seal to Illycia.
Aria didn’t embellish the truth. Instead, she slowly explained the purpose of the seal to Illycia, and why it had been placed within her body.
After hearing Aria’s explanation, Illycia’s mind suddenly felt overwhelmed.
So, my body has such a history?
“Yes, and it’s precisely because of this seal that you’ve survived until now,” Aria said softly as the dishes they had ordered began arriving one by one.
Just as she had the previous night, Aria pushed the first dishes toward Illycia, gesturing for her to eat first.
But now that Illycia knew about the seal and her Anti-Magic Physique, her mind was completely preoccupied with these revelations. She had no appetite whatsoever.
Yet, mindful of her frail health, Illycia hesitated for a moment before picking up a skewer of grilled meat and taking a bite.
As more dishes arrived, Illycia continued to eat while pondering everything she had learned.
Throughout the meal, Aria remained silent, not uttering a single word.
“Aria… do you think… if I help you break the Dragon Race’s seal, will I die?” Illycia finally voiced her long-held doubt after much deliberation.
After all, those with the Anti-Magic Physique were only supposed to live to sixteen, but Illycia was already twenty. It was only natural for her mind to wander to such possibilities.
Unconsciously, Illycia had even abandoned her earlier desire to learn magic.
“No,” Aria replied calmly, her gaze fixed on Illycia, sensing the skepticism in her eyes. “The Dragon Race possesses treasures that can restore you to normal.”
“I guarantee it to you in the name of the Dragon Queen.”
Illycia stared at Aria for a long moment before finally waving her hand dismissively, as if letting go of her worries.
“Fine, fine,” Illycia said, her tone resigned. “If you’re putting it like that, how could I possibly refuse? Even if I did, you’d just drag me back anyway, right?”
As she spoke, she seemed to vent her frustration by taking a massive bite out of the bread in front of her, chewing fiercely.
Aria, observing Illycia’s words, recognized the veiled sarcasm but remained silent.
And so, the conversation, though somewhat strained, ended in mutual silence.
Afterward, Illycia gazed out the window, her mind replaying their exchange.
This whole thing is risky for me, she thought, and not just any risk—the kind that could cost me my life. It’s unsettling to have someone else holding my life in their hands.
What puzzled Illycia most was why Aria had told her everything so plainly, even though she knew Illycia would likely resent it.
