Chapter 64: Extra Story (Campus Arc)
For the entire class, Xu Ruozhou didn’t give Wen Yan a single pleasant look. The aroma of cake constantly drifted in from Xu Ruozhou’s left. Xu Ruozhou suppressed her inner disdain and managed to endure the two hours of evening self-study.
As the dismissal bell rang, Xu Ruozhou shouldered her pre-packed backpack and rushed out of the classroom non-stop. She didn’t want to spend another minute with this person.
Wen Yan opened her squinted eyes and quietly glanced at Xu Ruozhou out of the corner of her eye. Seeing that she had left, she sighed silently in her heart.
Sigh, the new deskmate is so difficult to get along with.
The surrounding classmates were packing their bags. Wen Yan sat with her legs crossed, idly playing on her phone while waiting for her driver’s call.
“Student Wen, aren’t you going home yet?”
Wen Yan lifted her eyelids. A short-haired girl with a backpack stood in front of her. Wen Yan remembered the homeroom teacher had introduced her; this short-haired girl seemed to be the class president.
Wen Yan nodded slightly, “I’m waiting for my driver.”
“Oh, I see.” The short-haired girl smiled, introducing herself, “My name is Li Tao, I’m the class president. If you’re a new transfer and have any questions, you can come to me.”
“Oh,” Wen Yan replied distractedly, simply humoring her.
“Let’s be friends!” Li Tao, still enthusiastic, extended a friendly hand towards Wen Yan.
Wen Yan glanced at her, stood up, and, under the class president’s expectant gaze, walked past her, “Sorry, but I don’t like making friends.”
Every time she made friends, she ran into a lot of trouble. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have had to transfer schools. This time, she didn’t want to cause any more trouble at the new school.
Wen Yan carried her backpack, walking past Li Tao who stood rooted in place, and swaggered towards the school gate.
Wen Yan had no ill intention, but Li Tao didn’t see it that way. She bit her lower lip. Her fierce self-esteem wouldn’t allow her to ask why.
Li Tao stared intently out the window, watching the figure open the door of a luxury car, and cursed, “What’s with the pretense? Just because your family has a bit of stinking money?”
“If it weren’t for getting a bigger scholarship, I wouldn’t bother trying to be friends with someone like you, Wen Yan. You just wait and see!”
Wen’s family driver stepped out and opened the car door for Wen Yan. Wen Yan got into the back seat, and the driver started the car.
The night was deep. All around, only the illuminated streetlights and the red taillights of the cars ahead could be seen.
The driver, looking through the rear-view mirror, saw Wen Yan looking completely bored. He smiled and asked, “Miss, on your first day of transfer, did you make any friends in class?”
Wen Yan slumped in the back seat like a wilted flower, “No.”
Not only did she not make friends, but her deskmate even disliked her.
Otherwise, she wouldn’t have drawn a dividing line or refused to eat any of the dessert she bought.
Wen Yan sighed. During evening self-study, she intentionally pushed the dessert towards her new deskmate, but instead of taking the hint, the other person glared at her coldly and sarcastically said, “Student Wen, hurry up and eat. It’s going to go bad if you leave it out any longer.”
Wen Yan slumped further down. She didn’t want to try anymore.
The driver comforted her, “It’s alright, Miss. It’s only the first day. Once you get familiar with your classmates, you’ll definitely make good friends.”
Wen Yan sighed, “I hope so.”
She had finally picked someone pleasing to the eye from the crowd, only to find out she was the legendary top student in the grade.
Her grades were so good that even when Wen Yan was at the neighboring high school, she would hear her homeroom teacher mention Xu Ruozhou’s name.
Wen Yan looked resentful. Why did she choose someone like this to be her deskmate?
She and these good students never had anything to talk about.
“Gurgle—”
Wen Yan’s stomach rumbled. The driver looked through the rear-view mirror at Wen Yan holding her stomach, “Miss, are you hungry? I’ll call the chef at home now to prepare a late-night snack for you.”
“No need, I’ll just grab a quick bite.” Wen Yan said casually, “There’s an alley ahead. Turn in there. There’s a snack street that way.”
“Alright, Miss.”
The luxury car drove into an alley. Surprisingly, after driving for almost a kilometer, they didn’t see any lighted businesses.
The driver looked at the pitch-black alley, turning the headlights to the brightest setting, “Miss, did we take a wrong turn?”
“It shouldn’t be.” Wen Yan frowned, picking up her phone to re-check the navigation. She was indeed wrong about the road. Wen Yan rubbed her forehead, “Everything is going wrong today. Never mind, let’s skip the food. Turn the car around and drive home.”
It seemed she was destined to miss out on the starch sausages today.
“Miss!”
Wen Yan was about to put on her headphones, “What’s wrong?”
The driver’s voice was startled, “Miss, there seems to be someone lying there ahead!”
“Someone?” Wen Yan frowned, sitting up straight in the back seat, looking ahead. Sure enough, a faint figure was lying on the ground on the distant steps.
Judging by the physique, it was a slender woman, motionless, looking weak. Wen Yan’s heart tightened, “Uncle Wang, stop the car quickly.”
The driver stopped. Wen Yan opened the car door and rushed forward. The driver turned on the high beams. With the aid of the light, Wen Yan saw the face of the person lying on the ground.
“……”
“Xu Ruozhou?!”
The deskmate who hadn’t given her a good look all day was now lying weakly on the ground, tightly clutching her backpack as if it were a treasure.
What worried Wen Yan the most was the crimson bloodstain beside Xu Ruozhou’s forehead. Although the blood on the ground was already dry, fresh blood was still flowing down Xu Ruozhou’s temple. The bright red blood was alarming against her pale skin.
“Xu Ruozhou, are you still conscious? Can you hear me?” Wen Yan disregarded the so-called social distance, bracing Xu Ruozhou’s seemingly breathless arm, lifting her off the ground, and desperately shaking her shoulder, “Xu Ruozhou, can you hear me? Nod if you can!”
Fortunately, Xu Ruozhou was only unable to stand up on her own and hadn’t actually fainted. After a long moment, Xu Ruozhou weakly nodded.
“Conscious is good.” Wen Yan breathed a sigh of relief. “Come on, I’m taking you to the hospital.”
Xu Ruozhou froze. She bit her lower lip, trembling as she pushed Wen Yan away, tightly clutching the backpack in her arms, “No, there’s no need.”
“It’s just a small injury. I can bandage it myself when I get home. Thank you.”
Wen Yan frowned, “Your forehead is bleeding. How is that a small injury? I drove here, so it’s convenient to take you to the hospital.”
Xu Ruozhou bit her lower lip, shaking her head forcefully. Wen Yan looked confused. At that moment, the driver walked over and whispered a few words in Wen Yan’s ear.
Wen Yan’s expression paused. She looked at Xu Ruozhou, noticed her clutching her backpack with a somewhat embarrassed expression, and suddenly understood. Wen Yan changed her approach, “How about this, I’ll take you to my house. I have a doctor at home who can help you bandage it.”
Seeing Xu Ruozhou about to shake her head again, Wen Yan quickly added, “However, this comes with conditions.”
Xu Ruozhou paused. Wen Yan and the driver exchanged a look. The driver showed a kind smile, “Student Xu, our young lady just transferred here and is unfamiliar with the place. We’ll need to bother you a lot in the future.”
“We hope you can help her more with her studies in the future, supervise her to attend class properly, or help tutor her after class.”
“Hey, let’s skip the tutoring.”
Wen Yan tugged at the driver’s sleeve. The driver winked at Wen Yan. Wen Yan followed the driver’s gaze towards Xu Ruozhou, noticing that her expression had softened.
Wen Yan was taken aback, but immediately played along with the driver’s words, “That’s right, I’ll need to trouble you to help me with tutoring in the future, so don’t decline.”
“The money for the medical visit compared to the tutoring fees… Tsk, tsk, the difference is too great. I’m definitely the one benefiting here.”
Under the persuasion of Wen Yan and the driver, Xu Ruozhou finally relented, “Alright. Thank you for your trouble.”
Xu Ruozhou propped herself up with her hands, preparing to stand up with their help and walk to the car. Unexpectedly, as soon as she rested her arm on Wen Yan, her feet suddenly left the ground.
In the blink of an eye, she was directly picked up by Wen Yan.
In her state of extreme shock, Xu Ruozhou subconsciously wrapped her arms around Wen Yan’s neck. Her first thought wasn’t about the encroachment on her personal space, but how incredibly strong Wen Yan was, no wonder she became the school bully at the neighboring high school.
While Xu Ruozhou was still thinking, she suddenly noticed the person holding her pause. Xu Ruozhou curiously lowered her eyelids. Under the faint light, she saw Wen Yan’s neck slowly turning red, and even her ears were tinged with pink.
Xu Ruozhou: ……
Wen Yan gave an awkward, forced laugh, “Ah haha, you’re quite light. You must not eat much normally.”
Xu Ruozhou pursed her lips, saying nothing. Wen Yan was so embarrassed she wanted to find a hole to hide in. She sped up, placed Xu Ruozhou in the back seat of the car, and then fled to the passenger seat, not daring to look back.
Xu Ruozhou witnessed her embarrassment. After a long pause, the corners of her lips slowly curved into an almost imperceptible arc.
Her school bully deskmate seemed surprisingly innocent.
The luxury car slowly drove out of the dark alley into the brightly lit rich neighborhood. Xu Ruozhou stared at the prosperous scene outside the window, lost in thought, until Wen Yan’s hand waved in front of her.
“Hey, we’re here.”
Xu Ruozhou snapped back. Her russet eyes looked over. Wen Yan had already opened her side of the car door and held out her arms, wanting to pick her up again. Xu Ruozhou pursed her lips.
Seeing Xu Ruozhou still not getting out of the car, Wen Yan was worried that her wound would get infected if not treated in time, her tone a little urgent, “Hey, why are you still—”
Before she could finish, Xu Ruozhou suddenly lifted her eyelids and spoke, interrupting Wen Yan, “First, my name is not ‘Hey’.”
“Second…”
Wen Yan thought she was about to be scolded again, but then—
“Thank you tonight, Wen Yan.” Xu Ruozhou tried her best to show a friendly smile. “I shouldn’t have judged you unfairly. I apologize for my childish actions earlier today.”
Xu Ruozhou spoke very sincerely. With the injury on her head, more blood would seep out when she forced a smile. Wen Yan accepted her apology almost without hesitation, bending down and hugging her legs.
“I accept your apology, but please stop smiling.”
Xu Ruozhou was stunned. The next second, Wen Yan lifted Xu Ruozhou in her arms and sprinted towards the lit-up villa. “If you smile anymore, I’m afraid you’ll lose too much blood and die in my house, ahhhhh!”
Xu Ruozhou: ……
