Chapter 46: The Daoist
A furtive figure moved through the dim tunnel and found a hidden corner where someone had been waiting for a long time.
“Why are you only just arriving?” Xu Mingxin’s tone was dissatisfied. “The wedding is about to start.”
“I apologize. Xu Ruozhou’s preparations were too thorough. It took me a lot of effort.”
“Did you get the items?” Xu Mingxin frowned. “You’re at the Wen family every day. You can’t even manage this small thing?”
“I got them.” The Wen family servant pulled out two identical boxes from her clothes. Xu Mingxin’s eyes lit up, eager to take the items.
The Wen family servant suddenly withdrew her hand, clutching the boxes to her chest. Her eyes were suspicious. “Miss Xu, you won’t go back on your promise, will you?”
Xu Mingxin was a little impatient but still pretended to reassure her. “How could I go back on my promise?”
“Don’t forget, I am Aunt Wang’s child. Even if you don’t help me, I won’t just let the matter go.”
“That’s good.” The Wen family servant sighed in relief and handed her the box. “Here—”
“These are the things you wanted.”
Xu Mingxin took it and opened the box. Two enchanting, deep-blue diamonds appeared before her eyes. The servant looked around and said softly, “Miss Xu, whatever you plan to do, you need to be quick.”
“Before the ring exchange, the staff will check the safe. If the rings are stolen, Xu Ruozhou will know immediately. If she checks the surveillance, I’m finished!”
“Oh.” Xu Mingxin responded casually. She communicated with the System in her mind. “I got what you wanted. What now?”
A dazzling light flashed. The servant who stole the diamonds was stunned. She looked around and realized there were no windows nearby, not even a crack that could let light through. The light vanished instantly, as if it were all her illusion.
“Give it back.”
Xu Mingxin frowned, her tone dissatisfied. “Huh?”
“Are you sick? I went through so much trouble to get them!”
“Give it back.”
Xu Mingxin was irritated. “No!”
“This blue diamond was mine to begin with.”
“…”
Xu Mingxin was about to complain to the System, grumbling about the old story of Xu Ruozhou swapping her blue diamond, but her hand involuntarily handed the blue diamond to the Wen family servant who had stolen the rings.
Xu Mingxin was stunned. Just as she was about to grab the blue diamond back, she realized her hand couldn’t move, and even her mouth was beyond her control. “Return the blue diamond intact. Don’t let Xu Ruozhou find out. I will figure something out about Aunt Wang.”
The servant nodded seriously, sounding a little worried. “You must rescue Aunt Wang. She is old and in poor health. Something will happen to her sooner or later if she stays in prison!”
Xu Mingxin’s eyes were wide, as if they were spitting fire. The servant looked at her in confusion. Fortunately, she had received Xu Mingxin’s promise.
Time was pressing. The servant who stole the items didn’t have time to think about anything else. She quickly took the box containing the diamond ring and rushed back to the wedding backstage.
It wasn’t until only Xu Mingxin was left nearby that the System lifted the control over her body. As soon as Xu Mingxin recovered, she immediately swore at the void. “Are you crazy? How dare you do that to me?!”
The System’s mechanical voice sounded.
“Host, please complete the mission to send the transmigrator back to the original world.”
“Can’t you understand me? I’m asking you how you dare do that to me! Do you even know who the master is!!!”
The System repeated.
“Host, please complete the mission to send the transmigrator back to the original world.”
Xu Mingxin bit her lower lip hard.
If she didn’t still need the System’s power to suppress Xu Ruozhou, she would have stopped listening to this damn thing a long time ago!
Xu Mingxin looked annoyed, forcibly suppressing her inner anger. “If you want me to send the transmigrator back, then tell me what to do!”
“…”
“Little Wang, why are you so breathless? Are you alright?” A wedding staff member looked at the servant leaning against the wall in confusion. The young servant wiped the cold sweat from her forehead, gently smoothed her heaving chest, and forced a smile. “I’m fine. I just ran an errand for my employers.”
“Oh.” The staff member opened the safe, took out the box containing the diamond ring, and checked it. The blue diamond was intact.
The staff member half-squatted down, instructing the two exceptionally pretty flower children. “You’re about to make your entrance. Are you nervous?”
The flower children replied in unison, “Not nervous!”
The staff member patiently stroked the two children’s hair. “That’s great.”
“Make sure to hand the rings to the two newlyweds. Did you remember?”
“We remembered—”
In front of the hotel, Lin Xi, who was in charge of greeting guests, finished her work. Before she could catch her breath, she saw a group of oddly dressed people walking toward the hotel entrance. Lin Xi quickly stopped them. “Where are your invitations?”
The person leading them wore a Daoist robe, had a hunched figure, and a long face full of wrinkles and crevices. He looked like a Daoist priest. Hearing Lin Xi’s question, they exchanged glances and replied, “Someone invited us here to perform a ritual.”
“A ritual?” Lin Xi frowned. “You must have the wrong place. There’s only a wedding happening here. There’s no need for any ritual…”
Lin Xi’s voice trailed off. Her clear eyes suddenly became cloudy, and she seemed to be controlled, clearing a path for the group.
The group exchanged glances, entered the door, and walked in a grand manner toward the wedding venue.
Xu Mingxin leaned in a corner watching the scene, pursing her lips and complaining, “Why did you make me hire a group of Daoists as a cover?”
“And you want me to personally lead these people to show off in front of Xu Ruozhou? Why didn’t you just send Wen Yan back at the wedding venue?”
The System remained silent.
Xu Mingxin gradually became uneasy. “Also, since you prepared all this—”
“Why did you go to the unnecessary trouble of making me find someone to steal the blue diamond?”
The System changed the subject.
“The wedding has begun.”
At the guest seating, Wen Yan and Xu Ruozhou were toasting the guests who came to their wedding.
Wen Yan held the wine glass, feeling Xu Ruozhou’s arm linked with hers trembling slightly. She turned sideways, leaned in to Xu Ruozhou’s ear, and asked in a whisper that only the two of them could hear, “Wife, what’s wrong?”
Xu Ruozhou was wearing a toasting dress. The red skirt hem swayed at her fair ankles. Her beautiful scapulae stretched freely. She looked like a blooming red rose, dazzling and eye-catching, yet her eyes held a deep sense of unease.
Her reddish-brown eyes fell on the staff member giving her an OK sign in the distance. The flower children were in position with the diamond rings. Xu Ruozhou should have been relieved, but she inexplicably felt more uneasy.
Xu Ruozhou clutched her heart. Her raven-black eyelashes lowered, and she said slowly, “Wen Yan, I’m a little scared.”
Just as Wen Yan was about to speak, the light above them suddenly flickered. The light went on and off, making a buzzing electric sound.
A clap of thunder came through the open window, startling the guests who were drinking. Xu Ruozhou was also startled by the sudden thunder. Wen Yan put her arm around her shoulder and whispered, “Don’t be afraid, Wife.”
“The hotel has a backup generator. The power won’t suddenly go out and affect our wedding.”
“I’m not afraid of…”
Before she could finish, a surprised voice came from the guest seating. “Look—”
Wen Yan’s gaze followed the source of the voice. Xu Ruozhou subconsciously gripped Wen Yan’s forearm tightly. They saw Xu Mingxin walking toward them, followed by a large group of people dressed in Daoist robes. Xu Ruozhou’s inner unease finally turned into a sharp blade, piercing her heart.
“Sister~” Xu Mingxin’s voice was sweet, her expression smiling, but her eyes hid a hint of malice. “I’m here to give you a wedding gift.”
The guests in the room began to whisper among themselves.
“These people aren’t Daoists, are they?”
“Aren’t the Xu sisters close? Who invites Daoists to their sister’s wedding?”
“What exactly is going on?”
The moment Xu Ruozhou saw the Daoist robes, she had a premonition and instinctively shielded Wen Yan. Xu Mingxin saw this and chuckled, laughing out loud. She clapped her hands forcefully, as if witnessing a good show, and mocked, “Sister, you really protect your Alpha.”
“Xu Mingxin, what do you want?” Xu Ruozhou shielded Wen Yan behind her. Xu Mingxin smiled, not answering her question. Instead, she turned to the bewildered guests. “Everyone, my sister has been deceived!”
The guests: ?
Xu Mingxin looked triumphant. She turned around, her finger reaching past Xu Ruozhou to point at Wen Yan. “She is not Wen Yan at all!”
The guests: ???
Xu Ruozhou’s expression remained unchanged, but her lips trembled as she refuted, “Don’t listen to her nonsense. That’s not true!”
“Wen Yan is Wen Yan! How could she be fake!”
“Is that so?” Xu Mingxin walked up to Xu Ruozhou, a mocking smile on her lips. “Then, Sister—”
“Why are you constantly blocking this fake person, not even daring to let anyone touch her?”
Xu Ruozhou bit her lower lip. Xu Mingxin seemed to have caught her weak spot and laughed to herself. “Is it because you have a guilty conscience?”
“Xu Mingxin, you—”
The guests suddenly stirred. Someone shouted, “CEO Xu, is what your sister is saying true or false?”
Xu Ruozhou didn’t hesitate. “Of course, it’s false!”
“Then why won’t you move aside?” Xu Mingxin challenged. “If you don’t have a guilty conscience, why won’t you let the people I hired even touch Wen Yan?”
“Sister, I’m afraid you’re the one with something to hide.”
“I…”
Many of the wedding guests were wealthy families in the circle, and several had had their businesses stolen by Xu Ruozhou. They were already at odds with Xu Ruozhou. Seizing the rare opportunity to see Xu Ruozhou humbled, they couldn’t help but egg on the situation. “Exactly!”
“If she’s Wen Yan, why don’t you move aside?”
Xu Mingxin’s gaze fell on the Daoist priest behind her. The leading priest met her eyes, immediately grabbed his whisk, and vaguely waved it up and down in the air a few times. His movements were elegant, as if a deity had descended. Everyone’s gaze followed the Daoist’s movements, and they couldn’t help but gasp, “Wow.”
Wen Yan sneered softly. “Just a sham.”
The Daoist’s hand movements paused. He narrowed his eyes, pointed at Wen Yan, and turned to the crowd. “This person has been possessed by an evil spirit!”
“Bring me my talisman! I will make her reveal her true form right now!”
Wen Yan: ?
The Daoist’s words caused a commotion among the guests.
“Are you kidding me? I just came to watch the drama of siblings turning against each other, and there’s really a ghost?”
“Now that you mention it, it is a bit strange. Didn’t you forget that Wen Yan was Xu Mingxin’s suitor before? Right up until a week before marrying Xu Ruozhou, she was still pursuing Xu Mingxin.”
“Exactly. When the news of Wen Yan and Xu Ruozhou’s marriage broke, I thought it was strange. Why would the Wen family Alpha suddenly marry Xu Ruozhou and even hand over control of the company to her after marriage? There must be a problem.”
Wealthy families have always had superstitious traditions. Many families have enshrined gods and Buddhas, and some even raised small spirits for wealth. Many people deeply believed Xu Mingxin’s claims, looking at Wen Yan with fear and a hint of excitement.
Wen Yan didn’t believe the eccentric Daoist at all. Unlike her, Xu Ruozhou was extremely flustered. The moment the Daoist claimed Wen Yan was possessed, she grabbed Wen Yan’s arm, trying to take her away.
Xu Ruozhou took a deep breath, resolving her mind. “The wedding is canceled, Wen Yan, let’s go!”
“Hey—” Xu Mingxin was persistent, blocking their path. A hint of maliciousness flashed in her eyes. “Sister, where are you going?”
Xu Ruozhou bit her lower lip. “Xu Mingxin, move aside. Don’t make me say it a second time, otherwise…”
Before she could finish, Xu Ruozhou’s shoulder was gently patted. She looked back and saw it was Wen Yan. Wen Yan signaled with her eyes for her to move aside. Xu Ruozhou was startled. “Wen Yan…”
Wen Yan walked straight toward the fake daughter. A smile was on her lips, but there was no warmth in her eyes.
Alphas are inherently taller than Omegas. When Wen Yan wasn’t smiling, her features were cold, and she exuded the aloof aura of a long-time superior. Xu Mingxin was stunned by her presence and subconsciously took a step back.
“Are you saying I’m possessed?” Wen Yan said expressionlessly.
Xu Mingxin bit her lower lip, communicating with the System in her mind. “System, are you ready?”
“Mhm.”
Receiving an affirmative answer, Xu Mingxin sighed in relief, confidently raising her head. “Yes, you are not Wen Yan at all!”
