- Chapter 65 - Even a Cornered Dog Will Jump Over a Wall
The film crew’s shooting schedule was already past the halfway mark. After all, this was just a web series without any particularly melodramatic or shocking plot points.
In her previous life, Song Qingxing was baffled by the series’ massive success. People just said the show captured the unique beauty and regret of adolescence.
The director was naturally the happiest person about the filming being halfway done, so he organized a cast and crew dinner. As a novice director, he wasn’t exactly loaded, so the venue wasn’t anything high-end.
However, Song Qingxing didn’t mind.
The director would one day become a renowned filmmaker, so building a good relationship now was definitely the right move. Thus, Song Qingxing attended the gathering.
With Song Qingxing present, Xie Jingcheng naturally came along. Their relationship had grown significantly during this time.
Xie Jingcheng was practically beaming. Even people who weren’t particularly observant could tell she was in a very good mood.
Inside the modest private room, a table full of people was seated. The associate director next to the director seemed nervous, his fingers trembling non-stop.
But no one noticed his odd behavior.
Everyone was just busy chatting amongst themselves.
Song Qingxing would occasionally chime in with a remark or two, agreeing with the director. After two glasses of baijiu (Chinese white spirit), her head quickly started spinning with stars, leaving her feeling dizzy and disoriented.
Xie Jingcheng held her in her arms and fed her a few sips of hot tea before Song Qingxing sobered up a little.
“Don’t drink so much again.”
Xie Jingcheng frowned. She didn’t like Song Qingxing losing her senses in a crowded place; it wasn’t good.
“Haha… It’s because you’re here with me that I dare to drink and relax…”
Song Qingxing reached out a slender finger, gently pinching Xie Jingcheng’s delicate cheek. Her words, every single one of them, were sincere.
They warmed Xie Jingcheng’s heart.
“Even if I’m by your side, you shouldn’t let your guard down. What if I’m unreliable sometimes?”
Xie Jingcheng continued to admonish her.
Just as the two were talking, the associate director suddenly stood up.
“Jingcheng, Qingxing, the crew owes you both a debt of gratitude for your care these past days!”
The director was slightly displeased with this sudden toast, as he hadn’t even gotten a chance to butter them up himself, but he didn’t say much.
The associate director was speaking on his behalf anyway.
Xie Jingcheng nodded, her expression rather perfunctory.
“It’s no trouble. It’s what we should do.”
“I’d like to propose a toast to you.”
The associate director raised his glass. Xie Jingcheng didn’t suspect anything and raised her own glass. The associate director smiled and nodded.
“How can you say it’s what you should do? You’ve brought this web series an enormous amount of traffic!”
Upon hearing this, the entire room fell into an awkward silence. They all felt that the associate director might have been overzealous with his flattery and missed the mark.
If they were talking about a traffic star, Xie Jingcheng didn’t really fit the bill; Song Qingxing was the one who genuinely brought in the audience.
Xie Jingcheng simply set her glass down.
She clearly had no intention of drinking the toast, obviously displeased with the associate director’s words. She was always known for her arrogance and never showed a good face to hypocritical people.
The whole room suddenly became embarrassed.
A cameraman stood up.
“Alright, alright, everyone just drink! Don’t let these things spoil the mood. Harmony brings wealth!”
Perhaps he stood up too quickly, as he nearly bumped Xie Jingcheng’s glass. Song Qingxing quickly reached out to steady it, but a little bit of the liquid still touched her fingertips.
Song Qingxing simply took the entire glass.
“Don’t take offense at the associate director. He meant to say you have great fame and bring traffic.”
Song Qingxing’s interpersonal skills were far more polished than in her previous life. She knew how to resolve a deadlock between a director and a big star.
After all, she had done plenty of such things after she became a forgotten actress.
When her wife personally brought the wine to her lips, how could she refuse?
Xie Jingcheng decided not to fuss over such trivial matters. She simply nodded and drank the wine that was offered to her.
However, immediately after drinking it, she felt a profound dizziness. Damn it, why was this one glass of wine so potent? Was her alcohol tolerance worse than Song Qingxing’s?
That shouldn’t be the case.
Xie Jingcheng frequently socialized at home for business.
Logically speaking, not just one glass, but five or six wouldn’t make her this easily drunk. Although baijiu has a high alcohol content, the foreign spirits she drank weren’t low-proof either.
But the group of people continued their jovial conversation.
Xie Jingcheng quietly suppressed the strange feeling, waiting silently until the sky grew dark.
Only then did Song Qingxing help her out of the private room.
“Xie Jingcheng, Xie, the great Movie Queen.”
“Isn’t your stamina supposed to be great?”
“How could one glass of wine get you this drunk?”
Song Qingxing’s cheeks were also flushed, but after a few cups of tea, she was mostly sober. Looking at Xie Jingcheng now, her tone was teasing.
As the two grew closer, she also dared to joke with Xie Jingcheng.
“I don’t know.”
“Maybe it’s because I haven’t had a drink in a while…”
Xie Jingcheng covered her head with her hand. She felt a throbbing pain in her temples, like someone was tapping them with an awl. Her consciousness was beginning to blur, but she could barely maintain control.
Thank goodness the little rabbit is with me this time, or I would truly embarrass myself.
“Is that so?”
Song Qingxing didn’t know. Although she had a lot more social engagements in her previous life, that was a body from years later. It was different from her current body, which hadn’t drunk much. The body’s adaptability to alcohol was determined by the physical body, not the soul.
The two stumbled out of the elevator and into the parking lot.
Song Qingxing hadn’t found their car yet.
Then, she heard footsteps echoing in the parking lot—a loud, disorderly sound, seemingly from a group of people.
She assumed it was just another table of guests from the restaurant who had gotten drunk and were leaving.
But then she suddenly realized the footsteps were coming directly toward her. Song Qingxing’s sobriety was instantly restored by fear. She turned around, vigilantly watching the group of people.
The person leading them wore a baseball cap and was unshaven, his eyes bloodshot. This face seemed vaguely familiar.
Song Qingxing’s eyes widened. She stared intently, a sense of shock washing over her. She pursed her lips, her voice practically squeezed out from between her teeth.
” Peng Zhi’en, what are you trying to do now?”
“Nothing much. Just giving up and breaking what’s left.”
Peng Zhi’en held a long club in his hand, but the tip of the club was unusual, seemingly bound with blunt nails.
This weapon was practically a scaled-down morning star. In a real-life fight, it could certainly be lethal.
“Xie Jingcheng has already pushed me to the point of no return. If it weren’t for the fact that you still have one film left, would your Xie family have intended to send me to jail?”
People are like this: after begging for mercy and failing to receive proper relief, they often turn to killing the person who caused their downfall.
“So what?”
Xie Jingcheng was surprisingly calm, but right after speaking, she felt intensely dizzy in her temples, and her legs became weak.
“Hahaha, Xie Jingcheng, even if you have some mediocre martial arts skills, you’ve been hit now.”
“If I could just taste you before I die, that wouldn’t be bad either.”
At this moment, Peng Zhi’en felt all the pent-up frustration of the past few days being released.
That would be utterly exhilarating!
