Reborn As The Wicked Little Sister-in-Law - Chapter 14
Chapter 14: The Patient
The female physician examined Lü Guiyan’s hands and feet thoroughly, confirming that only her right foot was injured.
“The wound on your forehead isn’t deep. It will heal in a few days if you apply the medicine, but you must keep your diet light. As for your leg, you need to rest for a few days—remember, no running around.”
The physician kindly finished writing out the prescription and handed it to Lü Guiyan. Lü Guiyan took it with a joyful smile, but her expression soured the moment she looked at it. She didn’t recognize a single character.
“Do you… not know how to read?” the physician asked, sensing her struggle.
Wei Chengyan, standing nearby, let out a silent sneer. Lü Guiyan nodded awkwardly and lowered her head in shame. Ten years of schooling in my past life, and here I am, practically illiterate.
“It’s alright,” the physician comforted. “Just give the prescription to your servant and have her fetch the medicine accordingly.”
After speaking, the physician glanced around. Realizing there was no one else present besides the three of them, she understood that this concubine was truly unfavored—she didn’t even have a maid to wait on her.
“How about this: I’ll have someone deliver the prepared medicine directly to you tomorrow.”
Such a thoughtful and beautiful doctor made Lü Guiyan’s heart swell with warmth. She gave a sweet smile. “Thank you so much. What is your name?”
“Lin Feng.”
Ahem, ahem…
Wei Chengyan made a noise from the side, instantly ruining Lü Guiyan’s mood. What an eyesore!
“Lin Feng… can I call you Sister?” Lü Guiyan asked.
Lin Feng’s smile bloomed like a flower. “Of course. I am five years older than you.”
Hearing this, Lü Guiyan grew thoughtful and called out to Qiyun in her mind.
Who is this Lin Feng?I don’t know. This character wasn’t in the original story. She said she’s older than me. Strange—we just met and she already knew my age. It seems she’s quite close to Wei Chengyan.
Initially, Lü Guiyan thought Lin Feng was a doctor sent by Lady Lan, and that Wei Chengyan had only tagged along because her father ordered it. Now, it seemed the doctor was actually brought here by Wei Chengyan. Since they were allies, would they try to poison her?
The thought made Lü Guiyan shudder. Wei Chengyan noticed and asked, “Are you cold?”
“It’s nothing.”
Lin Feng packed her medical bag, preparing to leave, but her gaze remained on Lü Guiyan. Lü Guiyan turned away and fumbled with her coin purse, only to find it completely empty. She had lost everything to the other concubines yesterday. While He Yu had returned her clothes and jewelry, she had zero cash.
What do I do? How do I ask Wei Chengyan to pay?
Just as she was crafting an excuse, Wei Chengyan spoke to Lin Feng. “Just go. She has no money. She’s poorer than a third-class maid in my courtyard.”
Lü Guiyan: “…”
Lin Feng remained expressionless. She gave Lü Guiyan a few more instructions and prepared to head out. Lü Guiyan felt her face flush like a cooked duck. She grabbed Wei Chengyan’s hand and said piteously, “Didn’t you say… you would be generous?”
“I never said such a thing,” Wei Chengyan replied with a bright, airy smile.
“Are you sure?” Lü Guiyan’s lips curled into a mischievous, ill-intentioned grin.
“Positive.”
Fine then. Since you want to play it like that, get ready to be exposed.
Lü Guiyan resolutely let go of Wei Chengyan’s hand and turned to Lin Feng with a composed expression. “Sister Lin Feng, is it alright if I pay you in a few days?”
“It doesn’t matter. You don’t have to pay at all.”
Wei Chengyan, who had just been shoved aside, looked bewildered. “Your face changes faster than the weather.”
Lü Guiyan ignored her completely, keeping her eyes locked on Lin Feng. Her clear, autumn-water eyes were so bright and sincere that Lin Feng felt a bit bashful.
“You… get some rest. I will return in a few days for a follow-up.”
“Thank you, Sister Feng!” Her smile was radiant, her voice honey-sweet.
Wei Chengyan’s expression was complex as she left in a huff.
As the two walked along the stone path and reached a secluded spot, Wei Chengyan whispered to Lin Feng, “Add something to her medicine.”
Lin Feng felt a pang of pity. “She doesn’t even have a single servant. Why must you target such a young girl?”
“She’s no ‘young girl.’ She’s deliberately acting weak while she’s actually malicious and always trying to trap me.” Wei Chengyan’s eyes flashed with a fleeting cruelty. She wanted to use Lü Guiyan, and this was the perfect chance: control her through medication.
“What do you want me to add?”
“Something addictive. Something she can never live without after one dose. She needs to understand that in this manor, she has no one to rely on except me.” Her tone was casual, but her eyes were filled with something pathological. She enjoyed dragging people into the mire and watching them struggle from above.
Lin Feng’s expression darkened. “No. I cannot help you with that.”
“Don’t forget who saved your life. This isn’t up for debate. Just do it.” Her voice was a command, allowing no room for refusal.
“So, do you plan to keep ‘acting’ with that girl?”
At this moment, Wei Chengyan dropped her daytime mask of the “walking on thin ice” heir. She became cold and stagnant, like a pool of dead water—yet beneath that surface, madness, obsession, and paranoia were churning, waiting for the moment to erupt.
“If I don’t keep acting, life in the Marquis’s manor will be difficult.”
Aside from the manor, Wei Chengyan had a new goal: find out who that flower girl at Yunhua Tower really was. She would never allow anyone to lay a finger on what belonged to hermeaning Mu Yan.
Meanwhile, the gates to the Muhe Courtyard opened again. Xiao Tan arrived with another doctor, saying she wanted to check Lü Guiyan’s injuries. Lü Guiyan refused; she chose to trust Lin Feng. She felt that Lin Feng and Wei Chengyan weren’t entirely the same type of person—at least not today.
In the evening, after finishing her meal, Lü Guiyan intended to walk around the yard. But as she stepped toward the threshold, she saw the pitch-black darkness outside. No lamps were lit. The silence was heavy and oppressive.
“Forget it. Early to bed, early to rise.”
She tossed and turned, unable to sleep. It was too quiet. Lü Guiyan suffered from nyctophobia and night blindness. As a child, she had gotten lost in a cave while gathering firewood; she couldn’t see anything and was paralyzed by fear until her grandmother found her. Since then, she always had cute little lamps to accompany her through the night.
After dying, she had been in darkness for so long that she thought she had adapted, but being alone still brought back the fear. She mocked herself: “I guess I’ve always been a coward.”
Yan Yan, don’t say that. In my heart, you are very brave.Oh? For example?
The question stumped Qiyun for a moment. Finally, the spirit replied slowly:
For example… your thick skin. Even though you knew Wei Chengyan wouldn’t pay, you still had the nerve to try and sweet-talk her.
I… forget it. She’s just a spirit; I won’t lower myself to her level.
I’m going to be a billionaire in my next life. I must be magnanimous. I must have vision.
Lü Guiyan calmed herself and said patiently: Excellent. Now please, shut up.
