Reborn as the Heartless Alpha - Chapter 19
You Xuechu looked at Zhou Zhou with a calm gaze.
“Are you sure?”
“I am,” Zhou Zhou nodded, her peripheral glance catching Song Yi’s expression.
You Xuechu sighed softly. “Do you even know what kind of person Song Yi is? To trust her so easily.”
Song Yi tensed at the question, it was exactly what she had always wanted to ask herself. Instinctively, she turned to look at Zhou Zhou, only to find Zhou Zhou already looking back at her. She quickly averted her gaze, not wanting to influence Zhou Zhou’s response.
The warmth from where their wrists touched lingered, but Song Yi, too nervous, forgot she was still holding Zhou Zhou’s hand.
Zhou Zhou quietly savored the warmth transmitted between them and replied to You Xuechu unhurriedly, “Though I haven’t spent much time with Miss Song, I trust my own genuine feelings.”
Her tone was even firmer than before.
She had doubted Miss Song before, but many moments had convinced her that Miss Song was definitely not some scheming villain. Otherwise, the only things worth coveting on her would be her pretty face and alluring figure yet when she was feverish, Miss Song had remained indifferent. To suppress their mutual physiological desires, Miss Song had even used suppressants and scent blockers alongside her. If Miss Song had ulterior motives, Zhou Zhou wouldn’t still be herself by now.
On the contrary, Miss Song had always helped her, appearing whenever she needed it most.
When she was nearly assaulted by those alphas.
When she stepped out of her high school, lost in the crowd.
Even at lunch, Miss Song had only asked her which restaurant tasted better. It was Zhou Zhou who had offered to treat her. Remembering how Miss Song had enjoyed the meal, which cost only a few dozen yuan in total, Zhou Zhou couldn’t help but smile.
And later, the ¥2.50 ice cream Miss Song had savored it just as happily.
Miss Song seemed easily satisfied. She was wealthy, making these actions seem odd, but Zhou Zhou was glad for that strangeness, it allowed her to repay Miss Song in small, insignificant ways.
You Xuechu took in Zhou Zhou’s words, along with the unwavering trust in her eyes when she looked at Song Yi.
This girl was already deeply under Song Yi’s spell.
She knew nothing she said now would make a difference. Reaching into the pocket of her crisp white suit pants, she pulled out a business card and handed it to Zhou Zhou.
“Take it. If you change your mind, contact me anytime.”
Zhou Zhou froze, hesitant to accept.
Song Yi thought it wouldn’t hurt for Zhou Zhou to have another reliable friend. She meant to pat Zhou Zhou’s shoulder to encourage her to take it, only to realize she had no free hand.
One hand held Zhou Zhou’s travel bag, and the other was already gripping Zhou Zhou’s wrist.
Her mind blanked for a second before she quickly released Zhou Zhou’s hand. When Zhou Zhou looked at her, she forced a slightly stiff smile. “Take it.”
Surprised that Song Yi didn’t object, You Xuechu’s gaze landed on the shabby travel bag in Song Yi’s hand her disbelief grew.
The old Song Yi would never have touched anything beneath her status. Pretty girls were the sole exception.
Bringing girls home was routine for Song Yi, but carrying a worn-out bag that clashed with her refined image? That was a first. Given Song Yi’s temperament, she should’ve coaxed the girl into tossing it so she could buy new ones instead.
While You Xuechu was still puzzled, Zhou Zhou reached out and took the business card from her hand. After glancing at it briefly, she politely said, “Thank you, Miss You.”
You Xuechu snapped out of her daze, feeling a pang of heartache: How could such a sweet girl fall for Song Yi?
“If Song Yi treats you poorly, remember to contact me directly,” You Xuechu couldn’t help but remind her before leaving. She hoped Zhou Zhou would know when to cut her losses and avoid ending up as hurt and humiliated as she had been.
Having been with Song Yi herself, she knew all too well the kind of games she liked to play games Zhou Zhou might not be able to handle.
“Thank you,” Zhou Zhou replied, clutching the business card with both hands.
As You Xuechu turned to leave, she couldn’t resist glancing back one last time. Her gaze inevitably lingered on Song Yi, and she suddenly realized how unusually quiet Song Yi had been all evening. Even as You Xuechu had repeatedly badmouthed her, Song Yi had barely uttered a word.
Something felt off.
Song Yi watched as You Xuechu left the courtyard. The villa’s sensor-activated gate closed automatically behind her. You Xuechu and the original scumbag Alpha had grown up together and even shared a brief romantic entanglement, so it wasn’t surprising that she could come and go freely.
But Zhou Zhou didn’t know the full story.
Seeing the deep, contemplative look in Miss Song’s eyes as she watched Miss You’s retreating figure, Zhou Zhou belatedly realized that the two must have been very close at least at some point. What their relationship was like now remained unclear.
Zhou Zhou’s mind raced with wild guesses, piecing together various soap opera tropes she’d heard from classmates tangled threads of love that were hard to sever, the kind that usually ended in reconciliation.
Miss You seemed like the same type of person as Miss Song both exuding an air of elegance, the kind of poise that came from being raised in wealth. Even the colors of their clothes complemented each other.
White and off-white, under the hazy glow of the lights, almost looked like matching outfits.
They really did seem like a perfect match. Zhou Zhou lifted her gaze to Miss Song, waiting for her to turn her attention away from the distance.
When Song Yi finally snapped out of her thoughts and noticed Zhou Zhou watching her, she adjusted the travel bag in her right hand and said, “Let’s go upstairs and pick a room.”
Zhou Zhou reached out to take the bag herself, but Song Yi didn’t hand it over, carrying it ahead of her instead.
“There are plenty of rooms on the second and third floors. If you don’t mind staying alone on the first floor, you could take the master bedroom on the third floor. But if you’re afraid,”
“I’m afraid.”
This was the first time Zhou Zhou had interrupted her. Song Yi paused mid-step and turned back, softening at the genuine fear in Zhou Zhou’s eyes.
“Then you can stay on the second floor with me, but it’ll have to be one of the side bedrooms. They’re not as spacious as the master.”
“A side bedroom is fine too,” Zhou Zhou murmured, biting her lip.
The idea of living in such a grand villa was something Zhou Zhou had never dared to imagine before her limited worldview had constrained even her dreams.
Considering that Zhou Zhou had always lived in shared dormitories, Song Yi figured she might struggle with being alone. So she only showed Zhou Zhou the three available rooms near her own, making it easier for Zhou Zhou to reach her if anything happened.
Being close by would probably make her feel less afraid.
The three rooms were more or less the same, with only slight differences in orientation and distance from the master bedroom.
“Zhou Zhou, think it over and pick the one you like best.”
Song Yi bent down to place the travel bag against the wall, then straightened up and said, “No rush. There’s still time before bed. Let’s go make some dinner first.”
With that, she turned and headed downstairs.
“Miss Song.” Zhou Zhou suddenly called out to her from behind, “I’ve made my choice.”
Song Yi turned around, a hint of surprise on her face, “Which one?”
Song Yi had already guessed in her heart among the subtle differences, the safest side bedroom should be the one diagonally across from the master bedroom.
“I’d like to stay in this one.” Zhou Zhou pointed to the side bedroom that was only separated from the master bedroom by a single wall.
Even if they weren’t in the same room, she wanted to be closer to Miss Song.
