Reborn as the Heartless Alpha - Chapter 10
Song Yi stood in front of the wardrobe, waiting for Zhou Zhou to come over on her own.
Letting Zhou Zhou see these clothes with her own eyes and realize that all the garments here were of this style would make her more receptive than if Song Yi simply handed her a random piece.
Zhou Zhou approached slowly, her mind buzzing with a feverish sensation, as if everything happening before her was a dream.
But dreams carried an air of unreality. She gently bit the tip of her tongue, the pain sharpening her senses and instantly clarifying the chasm between her and Miss Song.
The difference between clouds and mud. The phrase surfaced in Zhou Zhou’s mind, and she immediately stifled the faint, budding fantasies that had just begun to take root.
She stopped half a meter away from Miss Song, not daring to step closer. The beautiful dresses no longer held her attention after all, none of them belonged to her.
“I’d like to wear the black one,” Zhou Zhou quickly decided. Amid the sea of bright colors, her eyes had immediately caught the solitary black garment, though she hadn’t even seen the full design of the black nightgown.
Song Yi glanced at her, a flicker of surprise crossing her face. She had expected Zhou Zhou to choose something brighter, but she didn’t press further. Instead, she reached out, parting the surrounding nightgowns to retrieve the one Zhou Zhou had selected.
It was a deep black, plunging V-neck camisole. Song Yi hesitated for a brief moment after pulling it out before handing it to Zhou Zhou. “Go take a shower first. Don’t catch a cold.”
Zhou Zhou accepted it with a slight nod. “Thank you, Miss Song.”
Song Yi remained where she stood, watching Zhou Zhou’s slender back, sensing an inexplicable loneliness in her posture.
A thought struck her, and she strode forward with long steps, catching up. “Wait.”
By the time Zhou Zhou turned around, Song Yi was already standing behind her. “Your scent patch take it off first.”
“I’ll do it myself. No need to trouble you, Miss Song.” Zhou Zhou raised a hand to cover the back of her neck. This time, she didn’t willingly expose her fair skin or the alluring gland beneath.
“Alright.” Song Yi withdrew her half-raised hand without a trace of embarrassment or annoyance. On the contrary, a faint thrill stirred within her.
Zhou Zhou was starting to guard herself against her, a good sign.
This way, when Zhou Zhou eventually left, Song Yi wouldn’t have to worry as much about her being too trusting and falling prey to deception.
“I’ll go fill the bathtub with hot water.” Song Yi naturally stepped past Zhou Zhou, entering the bathroom first. She adjusted the smart bathtub’s temperature, filling it with steaming water, then retrieved a rose-scented diffuser from the cabinet behind the tub, lighting it. She also took out bath salts, essential oils, milk, and fresh petals essentially everything she spotted in the cabinet so Zhou Zhou could use whatever she preferred.
After removing the scent patch covering her gland, Zhou Zhou soon entered the bathroom as well. She saw Miss Song bustling around the tub, adjusting the water temperature, setting out toiletries, and arranging items she had never seen before.
“That should be everything.” Song Yi dipped her right hand into the water one last time, ensuring the smart bathtub would maintain the temperature. “The temperature control is here. If it’s not to your liking, you can adjust it yourself.”
“I’ve set out a set of toiletries over there.” She pointed to the vanity. “If you need anything else, just call for me. I’ll be in the room.”
Throughout this exchange, Song Yi avoided meeting Zhou Zhou’s eyes, afraid the other woman might notice her unnatural demeanor or the way her breath had unconsciously slowed. She knew Zhou Zhou had removed the scent patch the sweet, crisp scent of cherries had already reached her.
“I’ll step out first.” Song Yi stumbled out of the bathroom, making sure to close the door tightly behind her.
Zhou Zhou reached up to touch the back of her neck, staring blankly at her reflection in the bathroom mirror.
Once out of the bathroom, Song Yi began pacing frantically around the room. Fortunately, the room was spacious enough, and her slippers were quiet, so she didn’t make much noise.
In the novel This Scumbag Alpha Always Plays Fast and Loose, omegas and alphas could smell their own pheromones, but the intensity was entirely different from how they perceived others’. It was like in the ordinary human world people were always more familiar with their own scent, to the point where they eventually stopped noticing it, while remaining acutely sensitive to the scents of others.
If it were just sensitivity, that would be normal. But Song Yi felt she was now too sensitive to Zhou Zhou’s pheromones like an intense craving, akin to a smoker yearning for a cigarette or an addict longing for a fix. It was beyond the normal range.
Earlier, when she was in the bathroom with Zhou Zhou, she had clearly caught the scent of her pheromones a crisp, sweet cherry fragrance that made her mouth water involuntarily. Her mind had even conjured up the thought of getting closer to savor it.
She sounded like a pervert.
Song Yi suddenly wondered if the original scumbag alpha was still lurking somewhere inside her, sharing the same body. Otherwise, how could she someone who had never had such desires before suddenly develop such indecent thoughts overnight?
Song Yi, get a grip.
As Song Yi paced back and forth, Zhou Zhou, still in the bathroom, had already shed her faded, rain-dampened clothes and stepped into the bathtub.
The water temperature Miss Song had adjusted for her was just right. She closed her eyes in comfort.
This moment stood in stark contrast to her past. Back in her ordinary school days, she had lived in a dormitory, a 16-person room that wasn’t even as big as Miss Song’s bathroom. Hot water had to be fetched from a communal area, where long lines formed. Only boiling water was available, and she had to carry it back in a bucket to the dorm bathroom, mixing it with cold water to bathe. The hot water often ran out, and sometimes, to save time for studying, Zhou Zhou would just wash with cold water. In the summer, she would fill a bucket at noon, place it in the sunlit hallway, and cover it with a black plastic bag. By the time she returned from class in the afternoon, the water would be warm comfortable enough to wash with.
Miss Song… I can’t keep thinking about Miss Song.
Zhou Zhou shook her head and quickened her pace. Miss Song had been caught in the rain too she needed to hurry.
When Zhou Zhou stepped out of the bathroom in a black nightgown, she instinctively raised a hand to cover her chest. Song Yi was on the phone with Butler Zhang, arranging for a robot to deliver the suppressants and scent-blocking patches Dr. Ding had brought earlier.
“Understood, Miss Song. Also, while cleaning earlier, I noticed a pair of… very worn cloth shoes on the second floor. Should I dispose of them for you?”
Without headphones, Song Yi had the call on speaker. Zhou Zhou, who had just emerged, overheard Butler Zhang’s question and held her breath.
She didn’t announce that she was done bathing just stood silently by the bathroom door, her heart lodged in her throat. She had never felt so tense and humiliated before.
As an orphan, she had no family background to speak of. Occasionally, she envied her better-off classmates when they chatted between classes about new releases from certain brands and saving up to buy them. But she had never been one to compare herself to others, nor did she care if people judged her for being too shabby.
But at this moment, in Miss Song’s presence, she suddenly realized that she actually cared too.
Song Yi stood by the window, which she had opened halfway, letting in the damp air. Gazing at the boundless night and the drifting drizzle melting into it, her tone brooked no argument, “Deliver it along with the suppressants and scent patches. Package it properly, don’t let it get wet.”
With that, Song Yi hung up the phone. Neither of her conversations with that butler Zhang had gone smoothly. She rubbed her temples, and suddenly, the sweet fragrance of cherries reached her nose, gradually easing her irritation.
Turning around, she saw that Zhou Zhou had already stepped out of the bathroom. Unconsciously, her expression and tone softened. “All done? Go rest on the bed first.”
