- Chapter 28.1 - The Difficulty of Going to School
Two crisp slapping sounds silenced the cub’s fierce resistance.
Fang Jin covered her sore bottom with her short little hands, glancing at her mother and then at her little friend. She held back as much as she could, but ultimately couldn’t restrain herself and buried her head in her mother’s embrace, sobbing.
Fang Hao hadn’t expected that her one-year-old cub already knew how to save face in front of her good friend.
Listening to her daughter’s sobs, Fang Hao was momentarily at a loss.
Seeing the situation take a turn, the assistant quickly picked up the cub and, after informing Fang Hao who was frantically trying to soothe the child carried the cub away from the scene of the conflict.
Once they were away from the recording studio, Jiang Man and the assistant sister both breathed a sigh of relief.
It dawned on Jiang Man belatedly that the auntie who had spanked Fang Jin was actually Fang Jin’s mother, who had never been seen before!
Noticing the cub’s confusion, the assistant sister kindly explained, “Fang Jin’s mother is Ms. Fang Hao, a long-standing but very low-key singer in the industry.”
“However, because Ms. Fang Hao is extremely low-key and Ms. Qian had a contractual marriage with her initially though it later turned into a cliché love story of marriage before love they have maintained their usual discretion and have not disclosed anything about their partners or children to the public.”
“To this day, many people are still unaware that Ms. Fang is married and has a child.”
Wow!
Sitting in the assistant sister’s arms, Jiang Man’s eyes sparkled.
It seemed like she had caught a whiff of some juicy gossip!
Jiang Man wanted to hear more, but the assistant sister said no more, leaving the curious little cub scratching her head in frustration.
After carrying the cub around for a stroll, the assistant returned to the office just as Jiang Feng’s online meeting ended.
Jiang Feng took the cub and placed her on her lap. Looking at the child’s chubby cheeks, she couldn’t resist giving them a pinch. “What happened, Man Man? Why are you so happy?”
Remembering the mothers of her little friend who had married before falling in love, and the flustered way Auntie Fang Hao had tried to comfort her child, Jiang Man covered her face and giggled softly, “Fufufu.”
Since the cub had been upset the night before, Jiang Feng was especially friendly today. She finally seemed to be acting more like a mother than a three-year-old!
Feeling the softness of the cub’s cheeks beneath her fingertips, Jiang Feng recalled what the deputy manager of the branch company had mentioned at the end of the meeting about her own cub needing to start kindergarten soon and she drifted into thought.
“Mommy?”
Seeing her mother lost in thought while pinching her cheek, Jiang Man waved a hand in front of her mother’s eyes in confusion.
Jiang Feng snapped back to reality and, noticing the red mark she had left on the cub’s delicate skin, quickly withdrew her hand guiltily and changed the subject. “Man Man, you’re one year and one day old now. Would you like to go to kindergarten in three months?”
“There are so many little friends your age there who can play with you!”
Chairman Jiang did her best to paint a vivid picture of how fun kindergarten would be.
If Jiang Man hadn’t once worked as a free childcare worker in a kindergarten, she might have actually believed it!
Even after talking until she was nearly out of breath, the cub still had a look of “What is Mommy saying? Man Man doesn’t understand,” which left Chairman Jiang feeling utterly exhausted.
In desperation, she offhandedly remarked, “If you go to kindergarten, Man Man can learn from the teachers and won’t be a little illiterate anymore.”
She had expected this casual comment to go over the cub’s head as well, but to her surprise, the cub in her arms suddenly beamed with excitement.
Rushing into Jiang Feng’s arms, the little one chirped like a noisy pearl bird by her ear, “Is it true? Is it true?”
“Is Manzai pretending not to understand to fool Mommy?”
Jiang Feng couldn’t help but laugh in exasperation.
Her large hand seized the little one’s chin, fingers pinching the chubby cheeks, molding the adorable child into the shape of a little goldfish blowing bubbles.
“Manzai is a naughty child!” Chairman Jiang declared with finality to the little one who had failed at playing dumb.
Branded as a naughty child, Jiang Man flashed a pleading smile at her mother.
Naughty child it is! But nothing must hinder Manman the Great from learning and shedding the title of little illiterate!
Set aside by her busy mother, Jiang Man sat obediently, propping her chin, and began pondering the various requirements for kindergarten interviews from her past life.
Many kindergartens had previously screened out diligent and clever children due to sections about parental status and family background.
Jiang Man no longer remembered her own early schooling experiences, only hearing later from the director that she had interviewed at dozens of places back then. All said she was good and asked her to wait for notifications that never came.
Eventually, the director pulled some strings to bypass kindergarten altogether, directly slotting Jiang Man into first grade at a public elementary school as an auditor for several years before she officially progressed with her age group.
The chubby little one rested her chin in her hands, tiny brows furrowed as if wrestling with each other.
Jiang Man was wondering whether she’d get rejected again this time.
According to the director’s praise, she had been so clever back then, yet no kindergarten would take her, proof enough that some child prodigies start being prodigies from a very young age!
The competition for kindergarten spots seemed even fiercer than regular exams.
What if she couldn’t get in? Would she be unable to attend elementary school, then middle school, then university.
This felt like an unsolvable vicious cycle!
This line of thought plunged the little one into heavy contemplation.
Could it be that she, Manman the Great, was doomed to remain a little illiterate forever?
No way!
Jiang Feng acted swiftly. After discussing it with Liu Ying and getting his wife’s approval, the perpetually busy Chairman Jiang added kindergarten screening to his daily tasks.
In the vast city of Beijing, the array of private, public, and private-run kindergartens was simply dazzling. Some popular ones even required lotteries or draws just for the entrance exam stage.
Previously, Chairman Jiang and Liu Ying had never paid attention to such matters. But now that Manzai needed to choose a school, these trivial details sprouted up like bamboo shoots after rain.
Though the school year wouldn’t start until September, many kindergartens had already begun conducting interviews since May.
For their little one’s schooling, Ms. Liu Ying canceled various commercial endorsements and photoshoots, while Jiang Feng cleared his schedule. Together, they carried their child from interview to interview, using the opportunities for reference visits.
The basic facilities at each kindergarten were largely similar, though public ones sometimes had more modest equipment.
Every kindergarten had its own pros and cons.
So far, Liu Ying and Jiang Feng hadn’t encountered a single kindergarten that met all their minimum standards.
Sitting in her stroller, Jiang Man watched the anxious mothers around her and couldn’t help feeling dread for the upcoming interviews.
Jiang Man was terrified of messing up the interview. If she failed, all the efforts her mother and mama had put in during this period would go to waste.
Even though Liu Ying and Jiang Feng hadn’t imposed any demands on the little one, the sensitive and still emotionally unsteady child had quietly burdened herself with unnecessary pressures.
The kindergarten they were visiting was currently Jiang Feng’s top choice.
After consulting various business partners who had children either already attending or currently enrolled in kindergarten, she had concluded that this private kindergarten had the highest overall evaluation score.
The school’s branding emphasized elite education, positioning itself as the top choice for the Wen family’s young children of appropriate age.
Many parents were drawn to the school purely because of the Wen family’s prestigious reputation.
Sitting obediently in her stroller, the little one suddenly overheard an aunt nearby mention the Wen family.
Highly sensitive to the name “Wen,” the child pretended to play with her toy while secretly straining to listen, her ears perking up like antennas.
Hmm… Is this Wen Qing’s school?
Pulling at the fuzz on her toy, the little one narrowed her eyes in thought.
Since the program ended, aside from Fang Jin, whom she saw daily while her mother recorded songs, Jiang Man had rarely encountered Wen Qing or Mu Qian.
Mu Qian couldn’t come out because her mothers were too busy, while Wen Qing seemed to have vanished entirely, as if she had evaporated into thin air.
Weighed down by these thoughts, the little one grew nervous during the assessment with the teacher, stumbling over her words even though she wasn’t particularly articulate to begin with.
I’m definitely going to fail.
Remembering how fluently the other children before and after her had answered, Jiang Man slumped her little shoulders, hung her head, and drifted dejectedly into her waiting mama’s arms at the door.
As her mama picked her up, the comforting scents of peach and sandalwood enveloped the child, soothing her gently.
Suddenly, Jiang Man felt her heart ache with sadness. Because of her lack of focus and nervousness, not only had she let her mama and mother down, but she might also never see Wen Qing again.
Having recently learned to express her emotions more freely, the child’s lips quivered, and tiny teardrops fell like little pearls from her eyes.
To Liu Ying and Jiang Feng, their usually energetic, sunshine-like child was adorable, but no one could be happy all the time. If the little one never learned to release her emotions and express her true nature, the future consequences could be unimaginable.
So, whether the child was being coquettish, acting spoiled and domineering, or shedding frequent tears, to them, it was a sign of her trust in them.
The little one had finally drawn confidence from them, feeling loved and protected enough to become sweetly clingy, like a sticky rice dumpling with a honey filling.
This was a very positive development.
Since the waiting area was crowded, Jiang Feng took off her coat, wrapped it snugly around the round little child, took the child from her wife, and holding her wife’s hand with one hand and carrying the child with the other, walked toward their car.
