Rebirth: Using Love as an Excuse for Cruelty - Chapter 27
Qin Xin was clearly surprised to see Yu Linfei. Unlike Yu Linfei’s pure shock, however, her surprise carried an obvious sense of delight.
“Qin Xin.” Yu Linfei’s expression was cold. Honestly, he was losing more and more patience with this woman.
“Linfei, what are you doing here?” Ignoring his coldness, Qin Xin was very happy. She hadn’t expected that coming to the hospital for a common cold would lead to meeting Yu Linfei.
“A minor injury,” Yu Linfei said flatly. “Are you here for treatment too?”
“Yes, I have a cold and a slight fever, so I came to get a shot.” Qin Xin blushed slightly at Yu Linfei’s perceived concern. She walked toward him and said in a soft, charming voice, “Where are you hurt? How could you be so careless?”
“It’s nothing major.” The moment he saw Qin Xin, Yu Linfei knew he was in for some bad luck. This woman not only failed to read the room but was also incredibly lack of self-awareness. Her overconfidence made Yu Linfei’s coldness useless, yet he couldn’t openly tell her how much she annoyed him. Yu Linfei stroked Wen Cheng’s soft fur, his lips curling downward slightly.
“What happened to your head!” Seeing the treated wound on Yu Linfei’s forehead, Qin Xin looked deeply pained. She said to him, “You men are so careless. If you lived with me, would things like this happen? Where did you hit it? Linfei, you really don’t take care of yourself.”
…Live with her? Two people felt their hearts sink at those words. One was Wen Cheng; his first reaction was: Is Yu Linfei really dating this woman?? The other was, of course, Yu Linfei himself. The reason for his reaction was much simpler. He was disgusted by what she said.
“Heh.” Yu Linfei almost let out a cold laugh. “Thank you for your concern, Miss Qin.”
There it was! He went from using her name to calling her “Miss.” It was clear just how much he disliked this “princess-syndrom” Qin Xin.
“…Linfei, why are you still acting so difficult?” Although Qin Xin heard the sarcasm in his tone, she was certain Yu Linfei would never truly start a fight with her. She said awkwardly, “You still haven’t said how you got that wound… Eh? Why did you bring a cat to the hospital? It’s so dirty.”
You’re the dirty one, your whole family is dirty, Wen Cheng thought, really wanting to reach out and give this stupid woman a hard scratch.
“Blacky is very clean,” Yu Linfei said flatly, sharing a rare moment of agreement with his cat. “It’s just a small wound, nothing worth mentioning.”
“Could it be a cat scratch?” Her imagination began to run wild. Qin Xin said loudly, “Linfei, did you come specifically for a rabies shot?”
“It has nothing to do with Blacky.” Yu Linfei was almost defeated by this woman’s lack of self-awareness. “Aren’t you going to see the doctor?”
“I’ve already had my shot. I’ll wait for us to leave together,” Qin Xin said shyly. “I was just thinking it’s unsafe for a woman alone this late, and then I ran into you. It must be fate.”
…Yu Linfei felt truly exhausted.
Wen Cheng felt just as exhausted as Yu Linfei. Hearing the phrase “nothing to do with Blacky,” he felt a strange sense of guilt. He stuck out his small pink tongue and licked Yu Linfei’s finger, trying to ease his conscience.
Feeling Wen Cheng’s movement, Yu Linfei gave him a tender look. This expression was a sharp contrast to the coldness he showed Qin Xin.
The young nurse who had been chatting with Yu Linfei clearly sensed the friction between him and Qin Xin. She looked at the handsome man and then at the woman named Qin Xin, her mind spinning with gossip. Ah, another story of a brainless woman trying to climb the social ladder. How interesting…
Once the conversation stopped, the atmosphere among the three people and the cat instantly turned cold. Yu Linfei looked down to play with Wen Cheng on his lap, and the nurse looked at a newspaper. Only Qin Xin didn’t know what to do; after a long while, she sullenly took out her phone.
After some time, when Wen Cheng was almost asleep in Yu Linfei’s arms, the nurse said, “Come on, time for the injection in the hip.”
“…” Yu Linfei suddenly felt a bit embarrassed.
Looking at the half-asleep Wen Cheng, Yu Linfei gently pulled him into his arms. He then took off his trench coat and wrapped Wen Cheng inside it. The tenderness in this gesture made Qin Xin, who was being ignored, grit her teeth in anger. She couldn’t understand why she was losing to a cat—a kitten that had been with Yu Linfei for less than a year!!
After settling Wen Cheng, Yu Linfei went behind the white curtain with the nurse for the shot, leaving behind the drowsy Wen Cheng and a distorted-faced Qin Xin.
What is so good about this dead cat? Qin Xin cursed the cat in her heart, her nails digging into her palms from the force.
Wen Cheng’s little belly rose and fell as he slept peacefully in the coat that smelled like Yu Linfei. Judging by his twitching whiskers, he was dreaming of something good.
“What’s so good about you, you dead cat!!” The more she looked, the angrier she got. Qin Xin, who already had a slight fever, felt her head spin. Looking at the curtain Yu Linfei had disappeared behind, a surge of malice rose in her heart.
…Yu Linfei couldn’t see her right now. If she threw this disgusting cat away, he wouldn’t know she did it. If he asked, she could just say the cat ran away on its own! Besides, it was so cold outside that the cat probably wouldn’t survive anyway. If Yu Linfei found it later, it wouldn’t be her problem!
With that thought, Qin Xin gritted her teeth and actually grabbed the sleeping Wen Cheng.
“Meow-woo?” Disturbed from his sleep, Wen Cheng rubbed his face with a paw. He opened his sleepy eyes only to find with shock that the person holding him wasn’t Yu Linfei, but Qin Xin!
What was she going to do to him? Held tightly in Qin Xin’s hands, Wen Cheng didn’t realize what was happening until he saw her rushing toward the window and pushing it open.
She… was going to throw him out!! This realization made Wen Cheng panic instantly. This was the third floor; who knew what would happen if he was thrown down! And it was so cold outside!!
But even knowing, what could he do? A two-month-old kitten simply didn’t have the strength to break free from her grip. He could only watch helplessly as Qin Xin threw him directly out of the window!
“Don’t blame me!” Feeling the warm ball of fur disappear from her hands, Qin Xin’s heart fluttered with a moment of panic. But she quickly regained her composure. After closing the window tight, she pretended to be frantic and yelled, “Linfei!! Something’s wrong!! Blacky ran away!!”
Yu Linfei had just finished buckling his belt when he heard Qin Xin’s scream. Ignoring the stinging pain, he rushed out from behind the curtain and looked at the chair where he had left Wen Cheng.
Just as Qin Xin had shouted, only his coat remained on the chair. Wen Cheng was nowhere to be found.
“Ran away??” Yu Linfei’s face turned incredibly dark.
“I just saw him run out the door.” Qin Xin put on a pitiful expression. “I wanted to chase him, but I’m so dizzy…”
“…” Yu Linfei said nothing, but his tightly furrowed brow revealed his frantic state of mind.
“Linfei, I told you cats can’t be tamed. No matter how good you are to them, they won’t be grateful,” Qin Xin continued to advise him. “It’s so cold out there.”
“He really ran away on his own?” Yu Linfei stared at Qin Xin with a gloomy gaze.
“Y-yes.” Intimidated by Yu Linfei’s silent, oppressive stare, Qin Xin stammered.
“Wasn’t he asleep just now?” Yu Linfei fixed his eyes on her—he would never believe Blacky ran away on his own. That smart cat knew exactly how cold it was outside. Running out in this weather was no different from suicide!
“He woke up as soon as you went in.” Qin Xin looked hurt. “Linfei, are you doubting me?”
“…” Yu Linfei remained silent. He ignored her and walked toward the hospital corridor.
“Linfei, stop looking! He must be far away by now. How can you find him like this!” Qin Xin shouted anxiously behind him.
“Go home first.” Yu Linfei didn’t even look back.
“You!” Qin Xin finally snapped. She yelled angrily, “Is a cat really more important than me? I have a fever! You’re actually making me go back alone!”
“…You and the cat?” Hearing her words, Yu Linfei turned around and squinted at her. Then, he gave a terrifyingly gentle smile. “With your kind of quality, you think you can compare to my cat?”
Qin Xin’s face turned deathly pale instantly.
“If I were you,” Yu Linfei continued to smile, acting as if he didn’t see her ghastly expression, “I’d find a rope and hang myself. Otherwise, being seen in public is truly a disgrace to your parents.”
“You!” Qin Xin couldn’t say another word. She never imagined that Yu Linfei, who had tolerated her for so long, would completely cut ties with her over a cat!
“…Miss, are you alright?” The nurse, having finished her duties, watched the scene and asked cautiously, “You look very pale.”
“I can’t even compare to a cat?” Qin Xin didn’t even hear the nurse. Her heart was filled with resentment toward Yu Linfei, along with a twisted sense of satisfaction. Your favorite cat is still going to die outside. Yu Linfei, this is your karma for looking down on me!!
