- Chapter 4 - The Handsome Little Beggar
“Your Highness, it is drafty outside. Please hurry inside, and we will keep watch out here.”
Their Crown Prince was frail and sickly, completely unable to withstand the slightest chill of wind and cold.
It was all this little beggar’s fault!
Yueying glared fiercely at Jun Xun, wishing he could pierce a hole right through him with his eyes.
Mu Chengyan stood up and asked softly, “Will you come inside with me?”
The youth nodded, a glint resembling starlight flashing across his eyes as he nervously grabbed hold of Mu Chengyan’s sleeve.
“Your Highness, you’re letting this little beggar follow you inside?”
Their Crown Prince was a golden branch with jade leaves noble, aloof, and pristine. Did a little beggar like this even deserve it?
He was covered in grime from head to toe, with mud all over his face. Where on earth did he even come from?
When the boy first arrived, he hadn’t sensed his presence at all…
The more Yueying thought about it, the stranger it felt. Normally, he could detect anyone approaching within a ten-meter radius, yet toward this little beggar, he had been utterly oblivious.
A scrutinizing gaze swept up and down the youth, yet he could not find a single trace of anything unusual.
A gentle radiance filled Mu Chengyan’s eyes. “Mn. It’s windy outside; what if he catches a cold?”
Yueying was left entirely speechless…
Still, he just felt that this youth wasn’t normal. When he had pressed his blade against the boy’s throat earlier, there hadn’t been a shred of fear in those eyes.
However, His Highness was kind-hearted and couldn’t bear to see others suffer. Now, anything he said was too late.
His Highness would definitely assume he was just bullying the little beggar on purpose. Yes, their Highness was simply that kind.
Even if he found a stray cat, His Highness would pick it up and bring it home.
Therefore, the Crown Prince’s residence didn’t have much of anything else, but it was overflowing with animals…
The spacious tent was extremely crude, furnished with only a large mattress laid directly on the ground, accompanied by a small wooden table and a few floor cushions nearby.
“Ah-Xun, it’s a bit rudimentary here, so please don’t mind. This is your roasted chicken.”
Mu Chengyan took out the roasted chicken and placed it into the youth’s grubby little hands.
“Thank you, Gege…”
Jun Xun split the food in two, flashed a brilliant smile at Mu Chengyan, and said, “Gege, eat too.”
Mu Chengyan accepted the piece handed to him by the youth, unable to suppress a silent sigh of admiration what a sensible and considerate boy.
How could such a wonderful youth have no one to claim him?
His own path was fraught with peril, and following him was not a long-term arrangement.
Once they crossed this dangerous stretch, he would find a good household to take the boy in.
Patiently, he wiped the youth’s filthy little face, though whatever substance stained it refused to come off easily.
“Yueying, go fetch a basin of water.”
Yueying looked around at the desolate surroundings. Where on earth was there any water out here?
The only method was to dig a pit; provided they dug deep enough, water would eventually seep out.
Channeling red-hued martial energy into his palm, Yueying struck the ground fiercely, causing the surrounding earth to vibrate violently. A massive cleft immediately split open in the ground.
The hole was certainly large enough, but not a single drop of water seeped through.
After exhausting every ounce of his strength, Yueying finally managed to procure a basin of water.
If His Highness needed water to wash his face, no matter how difficult it was, he would secure it for him.
Placing the wooden basin on the crude table, Mu Chengyan pulled the youth over, wiped his face with a handkerchief, and then rinsed it clean with the fresh water.
Yueying: “…”
“Your Highness, you made me fetch water just to wash his face?”
Mu Chengyan raised his head, blinking innocent eyes at Yueying, and nodded. “Ah-Xun’s face was too dirty and wouldn’t come clean any other way, so washing it was the only option.”
Clenching his fists, Yueying stormed outside and slammed a heavy punch into a thick tree trunk. A nearby tree snapped and crashed to the ground instantly.
Guchen raised his gaze to look at Yueying, as if staring at a madman.
“Gege, does he… not like me?” Jun Xun leaned closer, seizing the opportunity to bury himself in Mu Chengyan’s embrace while breathing in his subtle fragrance…
His fingers curled tightly into his palms, not daring to actually touch Mu Chengyan’s slender waist as Mu Chengyan gently patted the youth’s head. “Of course not. Ah-Xun is so well-behaved; everyone will like you.”
The youth looked up, asking with strained anticipation, “Then… does Gege like me?”
“Of course I do. Ah-Xun can stay with me for now.”
A flash of ecstatic joy crossed the depths of the youth’s eyes, vanishing in an instant as his hands quietly clasped together behind his back.
“Thank you, Gege.”
Mu Chengyan finally finished cleaning the youth’s face. Under the candlelight, a handsome face came into view, carrying a hint of mature sharpness beneath its youthful features.
To think this youth grew up to look so striking.
Mu Chengyan dug two white robes out from his own bundle of luggage.
Holding the garments, he measured them against the youth’s frame.
As he bent forward, his delicate collarbones were partially exposed. Jun Xun nonchalantly shifted his gaze away, only to glance back and steal another peek.
Mu Chengyan seemed entirely oblivious to this, earnestly estimating the length of his limbs and torso.
“These are all my spare clothes. They’ll probably be a bit large on you, but it’s fine—I can just trim the hem shorter.”
To speak the truth, these past years he had been unable to practice sword techniques, leaving him with no choice but to pass the time by reading books and practicing embroidery.
“Thank you… Gege…”
Mu Chengyan altered one of his robes and slipped it onto the youth.
With a clean face and dressed in pristine white robes, the youth looked remarkably dashing, radiating a unique, aristocratic air that made him look like an entirely different person compared to moments before.
“It’s getting late. Go to sleep; tomorrow Gege will take you to get something delicious.”
Just as he anticipated, by tomorrow they should be able to enter the outermost city of the Song nation, where food would undoubtedly be available.
Removing his outer robe, Mu Chengyan placed it aside.
Jun Xun stared unblinkingly at Mu Chengyan, completely devoid of sleepiness.
Yueying stood alone by the entrance, feeling terribly bored. Looking up, he spotted Guchen sleeping perched upon a tree branch and picked up a stone from the ground, tossing it lightly upward.
Guchen intercepted the stone mid-air with his hand and tossed it back down to the ground.
“Hey, aren’t you capable of speaking? Why are you pretending to be mute?”
Guchen closed his eyes, leaning back against the branch to resume his sleep.
“Really is a mute,” Yueying muttered with a cold snort.
Guchen offered no retort, appearing forever devoid of expression.
In the pitch-black darkness, a pair of eyes suddenly snapped open, glowing with a morbid, sickly intensity.
The youth gently took Mu Chengyan’s hand, holding it with devout reverence as he seemed to murmur softly to himself:
“Gege…”
Suddenly, a disturbance rippled through the night air. Jun Xun tucked the blanket properly over Mu Chengyan, slipped into his shoes, and quietly stepped outside.
A sharp, piercing blade slashed across the horizon, hurtling straight toward his face!
Sidestepping slightly, he dodged the strike as a bloodthirsty glint flashed across his eyes.
Under the moonlight, a man stood clad in black robes, the cuffs embroidered with golden dragon patterns. His handsome features appeared even more sharply defined in the pale light, his dark eyes brimming with a murderous aura as an extreme sense of danger radiated from his entire body.
The corner of his blood-red lips curved upward slightly. A blade materialized out of thin air in his hand, and the moment it drew close, the pupils of the men nearest to him constricted violently. They stiffened, collapsed to the ground, and vomited a mouthful of blood before expiring!
Upon witnessing the newcomer, the remaining men in black grew so weak at the knees they nearly dropped to the ground.
“Run!”
“Want to run? It’s too late…”
A low, deep voice echoed across the firmament. With a casual flick of the man’s fingers, every single one of them felt the chilling threat of impending death!
Corpses littered the ground in every direction, their states of death utterly gruesome.
With a sweep of his long sleeve, a white powder scattered downward, and the corpses vanished completely without a trace, not even leaving behind a single bone.
